It's usually very annoying to find artifacts and dust and whatnot on our scans. Sometimes, it is the scanner itself which has a particle that won't go away, or a smudge of some sort. Having a scanner for several years, for example, can bring this forth.

So, let's share our scanner cleaning techniques, tips and tricks. How do we keep our scanners in top form to obtain the best results?

Take care of the scanner. Don't pile crap on it, and try not to have it in a dusty/dirty area. Don't leave the lid open either, ever. The world slows down when something falls onto it, you'll stare in horror seeing a small coffee mug or somesuch falling in bullet time, your movement too slow to do anything about it.

To clean it up, windex does the trick. What really sucks is when you've been keeping it in a messy area, and it's got crap on the inside of the glass. >.< Gotta take it apart to clean it, and putting a scanner back together is tricky buisness.

Each scanner has it's own type of cleaning method,
therefor read the manual. And why is this topic created in this section?

Similar to LCD screens some can be clean with just plain water on a soft cloth.
While others need a special chemical solution to clean it.

Stop staring at my sig! :P

Since most flatbed scanners have a glass substrate, I would consider using a lens cleaner (the kind you'd use for reading glasses) and a lint-free cloth to clean it with. Of course, the best protection is prevention - keep it closed unless you're scanning with it. That'll keep most dirt out.

ive had my scanner closed and yet it still manages to be somewhat dirty, just a few specks in random places, i got a cloth with a bit of water on it, cleaned it a bit, but yeah ive been wondering how to clean it actually, may use the lens cleaner and the lint free cloth trick :D

A piece of tissue dabbed in isopropyl alcohol (antiseptic/cleaning alcohol) does the trick.

I myself have used windex, and yeah, those lense cleaning clothe squares are awesome. Cleaning alcohol, I'd never thought about, but I'm sure it'll help.

Isopropyl rocks. It's the same ingredient in many lens cleaners :)
However, I wouldn't use a tissue, since tissues are full of dust and lint pieces and can easily spread them. A lint-free cloth, a kimwipe, etc might be better.
