Is there a difference between anime and cartoon? why?

Couple days ago, one of my classmate say that anime and cartoon are just dump and there are the same. I told him they are not dump or same. Anime actually have point and have a storyline. Cartoon is base on comedy and no storyline. Like Family Guy, King the Hill, etc. . When I got home, I start have my doubt. This might sound funny. The first thing that came to my mind when I start my doubt was Hello Kitten (I think that how you spell it). So, are they or not the same. Why?

Yes there is most american shows have comedy and other jus tdoes not much of plot . The only good american cartoon series I seen was gargoyles plot wise. Most animes tend have great plots and cool characters. But again so does some american cartoons too. It is like 50 /50 between the two.

No they are not the same..cause first off the plotlines and storylines that you see in anime is completely different from any cartoon that america has to offer. Plus there is usually alot more depth in anime then in cartoons.And i mean like character details. Alot of cartoons you get the depth of a character after a couple episodes. Most animes they have characters that pop in and out through out the series..So to call anime and cartoons is really retarded..Cause yea i'd like to see and american cartoon come close to anime titles.

Well, technically anime and cartoon both fit in one very general genre, because they're both animated pictures, but anime is much more specilaized - 'anime' is a subtype of cartoons and only refers to the type we all love here, the Japanese Animation style... so even though, in a real general sense, anime and cartoons are the same, I also get pissed off at people who say they're the same... I mean come on! Anime is way cooler than cartoon!

of course cartoons sucks and do not give something valuable, you know, noone decide to download nothing from cartoons, anime rules pal, yes, cartoons have nothing work, characters sucks, there are nothing interesting in cartoons, believe me the worts anime is better than the best cartoon..^_^...

Japenese animation is different than American animation. Even though that line has started to blur with the growing fame of anime in america. As for story lines. In america a story in usually told through one or perhaps two episodes of the animation. Where as in Japan, the same story could span over 12 episodes. Granted there are exceptions. Take shows such as Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, Eveangelion. Thers are shows that use the lenght of the show to tell a story. Note however that these shows have an ending and do not drag on needlessly over epiodes that just go slow to make more episodes for larger sales profets in the end. Note also that since more money has to be spent producing more episodes the quality of the animation suffers dearly. So while the line between the two may be bluring, American and Japanese animations are different.

Personally I find that 'Anime' is only an 'Anime' until a 'Caricature' is animated.

Cartoon on the other hand just a 'Toon-ish' Caricature.

These terms arn't very well defined in the Dictionary.

The difference is anime originated in Japan and they take it a lot more seriously then america animation which is pretty much for children or comedy.

there are more american cartoons that the simpsons, family guy, etc. they're just not as mainstream... i think what we deem as "cartoons" in north american society is very different. there are american cartoons [i'm sure, i don;t know any real examples] that deal with some similar issues or have similar plotlines as anime.
i think american's do look to cartoons for comedy and children's entertainment... anime is smoethign you watch not necessarily for just mindless entertainment, but to be engrossed into antoher world..

cartoons are for the little kids till their like 12 when they find out about anime.

cartoons are not really drawn well and sometimes has no story to it.

cartoons are made by America and anime is made by Japan.. iono if that one makes sence.

Alright, I´m going to explain everything clearly...
Anime is an abriviation for animation, but in the western world is used to indicate an animation as "originated from japan", while people tend to use cartoon for western animation.
Cartoon is the english word for "caricatura", literally meaning drawn or unreal character or "person".
Either way you use it or understand, it´s true that Anime tends to be much more serious then the western "cartoons", but it´s not fair to treat them as a group, at least not all the time. Puka, for example, is a japanese anime, but it is considered a cartoon and not anime.

Most people say anime has a better plot, and while a lot of animes do have good plots there are a few bad eggs out there (geneshaft anyone?). Most nerds will agree Anime means its original language was Japanese, Cartoon means its original language was English.

Also, if you are looking for a funny anime, ecchi == comedy in japan (Tho the literal translation for ecchi == sex so you can guess what kind of humor... :P)

well, i prefer anime over cartoon. The anime is much better in therms of story-line and animation, sounds strange but "it" transports you to another world and some times you feel like you are part of it.

But i have to admit it, some cartoons are pretty good. Anyone remebers Jayce and The Wheeled Warriors? it´s only my opinion, but the best cartoons were from the 80's. Anyone have seen cartoon network? it´s full of "cartoon cartoons" made by them, all the time in the channel. It´s Horrible!

I belive the only thing that anime envy from cartoon is their lifetime, am i wrong?

omg.. cartoon and anime.. arent even in the same league come on now.. how can u put cartoon on the same level as anime.. its juss absurd.. cartoon is some lil kiddie shiot... anime has no limits in what it can do.. if u want to see blood u see blood.. u want to see krazy fightin action u see it.. it does stuff u cant do with other stuff... cartoon is plain lookin.. and has too many walls it cant breach.. anime looks very nice better plot better music better characters better everything

Those are 2 different things. First of all, the drawing style is different. But besides that, the main factor is the stories. In anime you have many mature subjects and such; the plots are good, twisted, complicated, deep, they make you think. We all know how it is with cartoons: comedy, comedy, some childish stuff, comedy etc. Did I mention comedy? Cartoons are mostly simple creations made for pure entertaiment, to laugh a little, most of them for kids. So the difference is very big and when I hear "stoping watching this crap for little kids" from people that think of anime as stuff that airs on Cartoon Network, I'm just so irritated...

i think cartoon are suitable for kids... and we'll all know some anime are NOT suitable for children under age of 10 or whatever~. therefore cartoon's theme or meaning are not as deep, cartoon will be a great lesson to kids or simply a good entertainment. but anime-- it's something youcan study on for years! it can be complicated, close to life in reality and really deep!
Cartoon and anime can both be beautiful anf touching. but sometimes cartoon simply can't do the things anime can do... hard to explain but anime, to me, is while another dimension.

anime comes from the word animation right?
and cartoons have been the "kiddy" name for animation.

but anime is not the same with cartoons,
since anime has been labled for japanese animation,
and cartoons for like popeye, PPG and western animation.

Cartoon can have complex story structure and characters that die as the time goes. AND most of them have deep feeelings.
Most otakus just have some kind of a complex against "cartoons."
Anime just is taken more seriously in Japan as a form of entertainment for all ages, opposed the western thinking habit that animation is meant for children, because "it's no real."
It's a matter of culture really.
And matter of how otaku you are.

I Anime there are Custum Rules(they mostly will explaind on a series start) about Physiscs and such thinks and they will not be brocken.
And in cartoons are Never Rules evrything is possible evry time.
