it is never explicitly stated what disease he has, but there has been much speculation about it... the three main ones that i have heard are leprosy, cholera, or some made-up disease used to get viewer sympathy... lol.

(btw... her name is spelt "Kaoru" ;))

It's either leprosy or syphilis. And possibly TB coz Kaoru was coughing badly in the OVA. I actually spent my whole day searching up for this disease after watching the OVA XD

Her name is "Kaoru!" No "w" involved! ;_;

And as Aziff mentioned, I've seen both evidence for leprosy or syphilis. And considering Okita died of TB, I think TB would be pretty cheap.

i dont get it..
y does kenshin die like that so easily................................
i hate the ending....

I was told that it it looked more like syphilis and that it can be given to someone through an open sore and not just...yeah. I guess the ending is to show that even the man of legend is still a human susceptible to disease....though it's so insanely sad I had to remind myself that they are not real so stop crying!

that's why I don't even consider the OVA... the ending is too sad and yeah, Kenshin dies so easily... :(

I don't condier that the ending since thier characters we're steered dar from what they really were like not to mention the wrtier was different and stupid. I consider this non-canon and an alt. ending and Kenshin will always live on anyways and even if he isn't real he somehow still feels like it

Oh dear... To quote someone frome annother forum, I think it's a bad case of plot device. The symptoms don't really match any real desease. TB is primarily a lung desease, and although it was pretty common in that time period, as far as I know, it doesn't cause the sort of skin sores both Kenshin and Kaoru have. Syphlis and leprosy don't really work either, for other reasons.

I'm part of the group that doesn't consider this ending canon as well. Watsuki, the author of the orrigional manga, didn't approve of it, so I choose to go with the ending he gave us instead. :)

I completly agree with Uttata, the ending in the manga was totally different and I really don't think the way they ended the anime makes any sence with the rest of the seires.
