When I first saw the original ending for Evangelion, it blows me away cos it was so refreshing and no anime series has done that sort of things before.
Sure, it will probably take a few sittings and you probably need to go dig up some on-line FAQs to fully understand what is going on. But once you do, I think you can only conclude that it was a brillant ending.
I know this is probably one of the most debated topics of all time but personally I din find anything wrong with the ending of evangelion. But I can definitely undestand why a lot of people din get it too.
So love it or hate it, it was still a groundbreaking series IMHO. And it remains a series which I enjoy rewatching once in a while.

First, if you didn't like the ending in episodes 25-26 then see The End of Evangelion and you'll probably get the ending you would prefer. It's a really great movie.
Secondly: Brief analysis of ep 25-26.
When I first saw Evangelion about 3 years ago I was totally blown away by it's story since I could relate a lot to Shinji and it was so different. The main story ends in episode 24 and you could say that mankind succeeds in defeating the angels.
The last two episodes are meant to explain some of the complex problems that pretty much all the characters have.
Example: Shinji is suffering from an identity crisis and is afraid of what other people think of him. You could also say that no one has ever cared for him. His mother is dead and his father don't care for him. He wants his father to like him and therefore he pilots EVA01 to please his cold father. Yet he hates his father and doesn't want to pilot EVA01 but he also wants to save humanity.Episodes 25 and 26 tries to explain these problems and why all the characters are feeling so bad about themselves.
Evangelion really isn't about saving the world from the angels, it is trying to show us some very difficult psychological problems that many peple suffer from. It's about relations between people and the conflicts that emerges from these.
There are really a lot of people like Shinji, Asuka,Ayanami,Misato,Gendo,Ritsuko, Yui etc in the world of today. Evangelion is pretty much made for them. It's for them to have characters that they can relate their problems and feelings to.
Episode 25-26 tries to explain that those people also have a place in our world and if they can accept themselves as who they are, they can all feel good about themselves and live their life with a stronger self confidence.
Hope this brief analysis made any sense at all. It can actually become a lot mot difficult. ^_^'

Evangelion is a thinking man's anime.
It is not about giant robots
It is not about saving the world
It is not about fanservice ;)Rather, Evangelion is what one makes of it. Even Anno says there is no definative answer to Evangelion; it just is. And how it just is works really nicely.
Shinji is Shinji, and the last episodes deal with Ikari comming to grips with who he is. The sureality of the episodes makes it similar in some way to David Bowman's transformation at the end of 2001: Surreal, and not meant to be taken literaly.
----
But then we have fans who complain, said the last two episodes were on crack, and demanded a proper ending to the seires. Their punishment was End of Evangelion, which witnessed much blood and carnage, killing off of the major characters, the end of the world, and as much violence, depression, and angst there ever could be in addition to the confusion that was still there. I haven't watched EoE for that very reason and I scoff at people who blow off the last two episodes as just being 'stupid.' Obviously thinking isn't their taste, or they're Gundam/New Battlestar galactica fans who are only in it for the gore, violence, and sex and nothing else.- Mar 05, 2006

Episode 25 and 26 was such a downer after watching the series. I mean, I didn't tell you squat about what's going on - it wasn't an ending! It was a filler in Shinji's mind.
Then, a few years (I think 2) I got my hands on End of Eva... It blew me away! It was such a comeback after the dissapointment of ep 25 and 26. Alright I did sit in front of the screen with my mouth open saying, "this is f*cked up", but still it was an end to a great series (one of the best in anime yet I belive). Also it wasn't your run of the mill soppy cliché ending where everyone lived happily ever after. It was original, creative and disturbing. Episode 25 and 26 DIDN'T happen!
Life is a game played by gods who are bored and who fight over the rules.

If you thought the ending to this anime was stupid, then you haven't fully watched and understood the anime along with the movies. I've gotten arguments back n forth but I read sumwhere a while back that the last two episodes happen AFTER the movies. It is somewhut obvious because scenes from the last two episodes were from the movies. So I rewatched it and I understood it.

both the movie and series endings are great...yah just gotta understand it...
and for those who think the endigns suck, maybe thinking jsut isn't your hobby...no offense...what i meant was you're probably more interested in the usual "and they lived happily ever after" endings...
But mind you, this features a really unique way to end a story...by letting the audience end it for them...

i thought of 25 and 26 as a sort of side story or filler...(EDIT: i loved these episodes however, although upon first watching them i never wanted to hear 'congratulations' again for a while...) knowing very well that at the time 24 was where the 'story' ended.. but the movies Death and Rebirth and The End of Evangelion were the true 25 and 26...
either way if you haven't seen those 2 movies... i'd highly recommend... you're missing out.

I haven't seen Death, Rebirth, or The End of Eva. But as far as the last 2 episodes go, They were insane. I understood them on the second watch, but it was still quite strange. Especially since you should already understand that Shinji's mom either is Eva 01 or is part of it. His dad doesn't like him at all (also evident in the series) and for some reason or another (Perhaps because she has a... Loosely-similar past) Asuka went insane. I really liked Asuka, regardless of her whiny attitude. Anyway, The last two eps almost seemed like a psychological assault with their metaphors and strange symbolism. But I admit, I love to watch them every now and then. (Omedetou!)

The last 2 eps were confusing but with some thinking and watching end of eva you can begin to make some sense of it. Every now and again I watch end of eva to try and find more ways to understand the whole evangelion story.

It's really hard to understand Ep 25 & 26... even now I still find it's really a bit dissapointment. But after I read other topic, I think I start to understand (even just a little bit). Up until now, Eva still make people make question...
I shall die before it's all begin... for I don't have any future with me...

some people say the last 2 episodes are the thoughts of the characters during third impact, but i say they are 2 different things, remember that anno had (and still has) psychological issues and that he never planned to make the movies, only after and because of the fans pressure he decided to make the movies (and get his small revenge by killing (almost) every single character).
personaly i tend to ignore the last 2 eps. i know they are there, i kinda know what they try to say but i go whit the movies for the end. they are the most realistic, i mean como on what kind of leader, president, dictator... would leave a weapon as powerfull as the evas in disuse just because the treat is over. they would be a great political and military influence to those who control them. (main reason i believe the jssdf agrred th the genocide of nerv personnel).- Sep 03, 2007
