I just wanted to say some stuff about the word hentai.
First of all, hentai does not mean anime porn.
For the people that didn't know, hentai is a Japanese word made up of two symbols. "hen" and
"tai"
Hen means strange and tai means attitude. So hentai actually means strange person or perverted person.
But for some strange reason when the word came to America it became anime porn.
I'm not saying to change how you use the word, I just wanted to tell people that didn't know.
Well, I'm done taking about this.
What do you guys think? Did everyone already know this?

I'd expect most people here would probably know that, they seem generally "up" on Japanese & the culture.
I think "Hentai" is just one of those things that went wrong somewhere & its now caught on, many people don't know what it means, but their first contact with it will be porn, or tentacles doing things to busty women porn. *shudders*
Its funny, because when I came to Japan I realised I'd heard the word Hentai at least one a day, & though I knew in Japan it didn't mean porn etc, I was still a bit taken aback as I assumed it was still something a bit in that vein.
Needless to say my Japanese friends were somewhat surprised to learn of its "foreign" meaning ;)

Yeah, I noticed it when I first saw the word Hentai. (I can only read kanji) I found it weird using it as genre for anime porn here. But people accepted it.
It's not surprising, the conception of the word changes from one country to another. You know what they always say "lost in translation"

I think it got lost in translation because in JP sites the letter "H" is read as "ecchi".
And as a big coincident that H is the first letter of hentai.
So H-game and H-scene can go both ways.- Jan 29, 2006

Well, the meanings of words changes and in the case of japanese and chinese culture it was very common to change the meaning of the words because the kanjis histories or way of write it. The word "hentai" many many many years ago was refered to the metamorphosis of butterflies, that considered strange, thats why they use the kanji of "hen" (that menas strange or in some cases crazy), then the years passed away and the way of use the word change and, when it comes to amercia, it changes even more
