For all of you who have watched Gundam Wing and Endless Waltz you'll know there are a lot of different groups. So how many are there all together and are any of them actually fighting on the same side? Whenever I watch GW the quote "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" keeps repeating in my head so I was wondering what your thoughts are on this.

Here are the groups I can remember:
Operation Meteor (otherwise known as the GW pilots)
OZ (Organization of Zodiac)
United Earth Sphere Alliance
Romefellar
Sweeper Group
Maganacs Corps
White Fang
Sanc Kingdom
World Nation
The Preventers
Treize Faction

Normally in an anime there is good vs evil but in Gundam Wing things aren't as clear cut. Each of the groups have somewhat valid reasons for doing the things they do so in the end is there really a bad guy?

I doubt the director or writers knew what the hell they were saying, let alone the people who watched it.

Life is cruel, why should I be any different!?

Every organization has it's own agenda. Good and Evil can only be judged after a period of time. But who is really to say which group or decisions that anyone makes is the right or wrong one? At the time something may be good but as time passes it may then appear bad. Kind of like Shishio in Samurai X(series). Clearly GW didn't have enough episodes to fully give each organization their deep reason as to why they fight. And maybe the directors just had to fill in some space so they threw a few other groups out their..

But at the moment why take on these things when there is Gundam 00 going on :-)

Operation Meteor(GW pilots)are the good ones, along with Sanc Kingdom and Maganac Corp and The Preventers;you see,the things are not so easy to understand in GW,but let me try to explain what i know about this matter:OZ are the secret organization formed by Treize,Zechs and others, they hide under the mask of "Special Forces"from U.E.S.A,Romefeller finance these Special Forces in order to gain more allies inside the Earth Alliance and of course, produce a lot of mobile suits to gain even more power to defeat U.E.S.A. and all who gets in their way but apparently they are part of th Earth Alliance. They are the main evil ones along White Fang, but you see,the Sanc Kingdom were the most Pacifist Land at the beginning of the war, they took the filosofy from the Peace Craft Family,(Relena and Zechs are the only Peace Crafts descendents)so,the Sanc Kingdom are good, they are pacifist. And well,i would like to explain more but i'll tell you later^^,Bye.

The reason why you are confused because you just enumerated the factions, but if you try to go with the flow of the story, you would be able to understand that some of the later factions were a results of the previous factions, let me illustrate.

Operation Meteor > White Fang (members were colony citizens that were enlisted in the OZ, military were in fact part of the original Operation Meteor they took the turmoil between Romefeller and the Treize Faction a chance to start their own little revolt) > Marinea Revolt aka Operation Meteor 2 (EW)

U.E.S.A > OZ > Treize Faction (TF was a direct result when Romefeller suggested using mobile dolls and Treize was dismissed from service)

Sanc Kingdom - don't bother too much about this country it's just as what Neoteny said. Focus on Releena. She was the one who suggested for the Earth Sphere Unified Nation when she was OZ's Queen Releena.

The Preventers are a small patrol team after the War of A.C 195. Don't associate them with OZ or the factions of that era.

To sum it up all of these factions are striving for peace but their methods are entirely different from one another. It's a matter of whose the biggest threat to peace is first disposed of rather than knowing whose side you should sympathize, if you are in Gundam Pilot's shoes.

I find GW story the most intelligent, when it comes to the Philisophy of War than any other Gundam shows I've ever came across. It's not a matter of Black and White but rather the fine spaces between those colors that appealed to me.

Well,it seems BlackSun did make an excellent explanation, the truth is,each one(in the series) is trying to put on the main table they ideals,it's like in real life,if you want something,go and fight for it!,you might think it's the right decision, but of course, not everyone think the same things as you,so the conflict begins,it's not like n Gundam Seed, that there are Naturals and Coordinators, etc.Well,I hope you enjoy your life renegadepsyche!Bye!

In any Gundam series there is no good or evil. That is the whole point of the anime sometimes ... that the truths are only shades of gray. There is never black and white. The whole point of Gundam is kind of like as long as there are humans, there will be war. It is part of human nature to cause conflict. Although humans are striving for peace, there is inevitable conflict.

You cannot look at Gundam Wing (or any other Gundam series) as a black and white good and evil story. There is no absolute good, nor is there absolute evil.

I think most people take Treize or OZ or one of those groups as the "evil" one and the GW pilots (operation meteor) as the "good" ones, but really, is there a difference? They are just fighting against each other. Both groups kill many people, its a war after all. Each GW pilots have killed lots and lots of people, so is that "good"? Treize's ideal is to create a war so terrible, humans will never want to fight again. While it seems to be an "evil" plan, you have got to agree his ideal is for peace, and his plan might be the only one that works. Zechs, while he works for Treize, he is also Relena's brother and he eventually becomes Milliardo and did a lot of "good" things. So who is evil and who is good? There is no clear answer. Just go with the flow. It's a good story on the shades of gray in truth and reality, and that's what makes it a good series.

In actual human history, the "good" side is whichever side that wins, because its the victor that writes history. (the losers are all dead or dying, so they go down in history as the "evil" people because they're not alive to write their own story) What actually happened in history, no one will know for sure. Because the survivors will write whatever they want.

I agree with Kurakaze and Blacksun about Gundam Wing. I managed to understand Gundam Wing after watching it completely in original Japanese.
