Are you talking about the Paulo Coelho Novel?
Maybe short, but definitely good... (I'm hoping it will come out on the big screen as a Hayao Miyazaki Anime feature...)

i've read the book, but it's been so long ago,

Yeah, the book is very good. Probably his best, imo.
From this author I also liked "Veronika Decides to Die".

It is the book written by Koelho I like the least ~_~
I'd advice to read Veronica decides to die as it was told before - it's my favourite his book and I think it's the best ^_^
