I don't know if is just me at my country. But enjoying anime/manga here is a top secret. I have a friend who does like too and we never discuss this in front of others. The only girl that I know who has the courage is seen as a ET. Cause is considered a childish, nerdish thing. In your country is just like that?

Well mentioning anything about Japanese animation or for that matter, any form of Japanese popular culture usually gets a smart ass comment or two. Anime is always kiddy and tentacle porn. Everything else is a 2 Live Crew parody with "me so horny". I discuss it with those who I want to discuss it with, anybody who happens to be in an earshot of the discussion and has something to say, can have a ball with that. I just give them a smug look because I don't care, and they are more than likely just ignorant.

Under construction. Who doesn't like plain text anyway?

Hello ^^

i live in france. i understand what you're living because it was like that about 10 years ago in my country ! it evolved... thanks godness ! it depends on yor location and your age too ! i was in an all girl private school and if i told my passion, people would have looked at me like an alien too ! i wasn't very sociable because i was surronded by these crowd of superficial rich kids (believe me, i'm gentle when i say that). i had the choice between being practically alone (or being transparent like i was the wallpaper, a really good technique) in peace or try to make contact and take the risk of being laughed at...

my country recognize for some time now the japanese comics, i hope you'll see that in your country too ! but you know, there are still people who think it's childish, violent and porno... but it's only some dumb who talk before thinking ! ask them if they have read a manga? what it is exactly? if he tells you it's a japanese anime, it's someone whose trying to look smart when he is an idiot and an ignorant... or you don't care and don't even bother to argue with someone like this !

"The third principle of sentient life is the capacity for self-sacrifice, the conscious ability to override evolution and self-preservation for a cause, a friend, a loved one." Quote from Babylon V

Wow I can't even imagine that over here in Canada. Here I've seen people bringing their laptop/PSP to class just to watch anime during lectures. I guess having a large asian population around really changes things. As you've said it's definately considered as a bit childish and nerdish but it's well accepted overall. In fact people might just hop over and start peaking at what others are watching! (yes lectures are boring, some people watch anime, and others observe what other fellow students are doing). We even have anime/manga student clubs, and you'll be surprised at how many people line up to join the club. I've heard that the anime club has annual functions with the nearby university's anime club, and that university also holds the local anime convention each year. (I have yet to attend that convention once, always busy during the summer...)

There was never a doubt in my mind that there were Otaku at my High School and College but like me they kept their forbidden loves to themselves as to not soil its perfection by wasting it on unworthy ears. Now like other Otaku, we crave to share our loves with our own kind if not try to convert the non-believers and sway them with just the sheer appeal, shock value, and awesomeness that is Anime but it is a huge gamble one that we don't normally want to wager unless we know it's a sure bet. Anime and Manga are sacred our most beloved drug...don't want to share it with just anyone. XD

When you say its name out loud you can take away its power and some times end its life...
