It's only natural that game worlds progress in complexity as the machines used to play games on progress in power and storage capacity.

For example, Oblivion's game world spans (I think) 30-something square miles with over 200 dungeons completely seperate from the main storyline. (And the Oblivion plane is even a world apart from the main world.) That's a huge jump from, say, the Dragon Warrior games, or the earlier Final Fantasy titles.

You makes a good point Zuti. I think that as technology progresses, the worlds in games also get better.
So, as long as the technology keeps getting better, so will the worlds in games.

They're becoming more original and more realistic (destructive environments).

Well they are certainly looking better, but improved level design is questionable.

Games like Shadow of the Collossus on PS2 proves that in some way thing are certainly improving, but some games just have awful level design.

Also look at New Super Mario Bros on DS, the level design in that are typically much clever than that in any of his 2D NES/SNES outings (world 2-6 anyone), but at the same time play very similarly.

In conculsion overall I say yes, but there certainly are still a lot of rubbish and uninspired game worlds as well.
