How many cookies does it take?

I was wondering how many cookies does it take to run MT ? When I
went on line yesterday I came to MT first and had a look around .
While I was checking on a few members to see what they had in
their galleries . When I was finished I went to a few sites I have
then went offline . My system cleans it's self when I startup my
comp . And when I am going to do some grahpics for my
Airburshing business's I clean my Tempt Internet files and cookies
off , will to my surprise I seen that I had a lot of cookies from MT
on my system 29mb worth . Of all the sites and forums I own and
the sites and forums I am staff on and the sites I visit not one of
them comes even close to have that many cookies on them . I
was lucky I didn't look at more members stuff or I would have had
much more than that . From what I see each member here has
their own cookie , that is just over kill . It isn't nesisary to have
that many to help MT run better or track our movements . At the
bottom of the log you can see I had logged into 2 other sites an
and did some stuff on them yet they had only one cookie each
that was put on my comp . Once you login there should only be
one cookie from MT and the one from the advertising companies .
I also see tracking cookies form several of the advertising
companies . I have read everything here on the topic cookies ,
under stand I am a WebMaster , so what is the deal with all the
cookies on MT ?

Just think about the member that doesn't clean out their cookies
they are going to have way more than 29mb .

Here is the log file from my comp :

It appears that because every userpage is listed under its own subdomain, each subdomain is setting the cookie. I don't think that's necessary, but I'm only marginally familiar with implementing cookies, so it'll be up to Sheq or one of the other sysadmins to explain further or to take action.

To tell the truth Tama-Neko I don't think they well even respond to this . I have sent a PM on this and I ended up just deleting it cause they wouldn't even open it let alone answer it . It would make one wonder why would they respond to this thread . Will maybe to kill the messenger perhaps . I know people have lives . Yet if any given person is off-line or on-line its called IRL ..

With each subdomain is setting the cookie , if that is the case there would be a cookie for ever thread as well as members .

Well I have different kinds of forums Invision Power Board ~ ProBoards ~ along with some I have custom made . They don't have that many cookies on any given one , and before anyone ask there is at least one of each of those that have graphics galleries for the members on them . Even on Boards that others own were I am as either a Admin or Mod or VIP or just a regular member on , they don't have that many either , only MT does . Even on E-Bay or Pay-Pal I don't . I don't mind a few cookies but that many . They have subdomains on each and every one of them and they don't have that many .

On a Web site, the site can track not only your purchases, but also the pages that you read , the ads that you click on , etc . Yet it uses very few cookies to do this .

A command line in the HTML of a document tell the browser to set a cookie of a certain name or value. Here is an example of some script used to set a cookie. Set-Cookie: NAME=VALUE; expir es=DATE; path=PATH; domain=DOMAIN_NAME; secure Cookies are usually run from CGI scripts , but they can also be set or read by Javascript. They also update when you go to a site that you have been on before .

Most important : Under the new legislation , if you use cookies on your website you must inform users about how you use cookies and provide advice telling them how they can refuse cookies. I tried to say something on that to some staff and all I got for my efforts , was guess what .

( Reads the posts + Falls out of chair while doing so... )

Darn RW, that is a-lot of cookies you have there, way to many for my taste .. T_T Why hasn't any one answered you on this, Oh- I see if they don't answer you they can pretend they didn't there is nothing wrong or is it they don't know you so they they don't have to tell you anything.

I use to get that many here, too. A friend of mine told me she uses ZoneAlarm to block that kind of abuse of cookies. So I bought the program, she came over an put it up on my comp lord an behold, it works like a charm. Check them out, you may find them worth the effort, or just send me a pm an I'll get her to tell you how she done it.

( Pats RW on the back.. )

Things well get better. That is if someone who knows whats going on that is.. o_0

Well doesn't the staff think they have had enough time to clean up this
cookie problem as of this day it has been 13wk 5d ago . Its so easy to
do , but some how I believe you know that already . Besides that's
braking the law if you think MT's laws over ride International Internet
Laws , your dead wrong . Point is one of the staff made these cookies ,
wouldn't be wise for one to fix them . Please respond with a answer
that all the staff and members here would believe .

Side note to Marissa :

Marissa do you think that remark you made to Jasmyn was called for ?
It's not like she was stalked any staff member here . If one is off-line
or on-line it's still In Real Life wouldn't be wise to act responsible ..

Side note to Jasmyn:
Thank for your kind words , Jasmyn ... It would be wise if you don't
talk to me any more , cause the word *target* comes to mind . I
have had all W/P an scans here deleted . What is strange one of the
scans in questions had a girl sitting in a chair the only skin that was
showing was her face some of her arms and her legs were showing
below her knees , it was high res , wasn't a hentai either . Even my
own post in my own user page was deleted , all I did was copy the
post I had put in her user page into my user page that way people
could see what went on in the context that it happened . Now that
can't happen cause mine was deleted not hers . Not a nice thing to
do alter the facts .

Strange Sheqel told me to talk the Staff members or member
even told me I could send the links of those that violated the rules
in a PM to the proper Mod that and she was guess she has more
power than him . I'm not coming here much if at all any more .
Under stand I don't hate any of them , but I don't respect them as
a person . I leave my attitude , anger and unjust acts at the power
button on my comps . Just so you know I have a Master Degree in
Art , it comes in handy with owning an operating 3 Airbrushing
business in 3 states . Any way Jasmyn , I have sent you invite to
G-mail that way you have my e-mail address . Have a good one an
talk to you soon if you wish .....

By the way, are the cookie names for any of the MT subdomains __utma, __utmb, __utmc and/or __utmz?
If so, I believe these are cookies left by Google Analytics and/or the Google content ads (the U in UTM stands for Urchin, which is the company Google bought before converting their offerings into Google Analytics, and is used in both the Analytics tracking software and Adwords tracking software.)
I do not know how much control Sheqel may have over cookies that Google Analytics/Adwords sets.
MT cookies itself (the ones that basically keep you logged into the site until you hit logout) are session_id, minitokyo_hash, and minitokyo_id and are only set under the minitokyo.net domain. Therefore I think it would be safe to disallow any cookies from *.minitokyo.net but accept any from minitokyo.net (if this is actually possible, I haven't tried it myself.)
EDIT:
After doing a little bit of investigation into my cookie cache, I have noticed that this also occurs on AP, which also utilizes subdomains for its member pages. Again, this is due to __utmx cookies set by Google Analytics/Adwords and is likely out of control of the site owners. This is generally not a problem in most forums, but when places like MT and AP have lots of subdomains, each subdomain gets a new cookie, and the more user pages you visit (which is what the subdomains do) the more cookies you end up racking up.

Gosh, that crash course on Analytics I got this week was actually useful in a non-work environment XD

Guardian of MT Laws

Well nice to see you are trying to keep up with the latest tech , Tama-Neko . If you would look at my first post , you'll see there isn't any MT sub domains __utma , __ utmb , __utmc and/or __utmz . These are cookies' that belong solely to MT an have noting to do with the Ad's. Glad you said something about Analytics here is a little about that topic for those that need to know .

The free launch of Google Analytics is a great thing for many smaller web publishers and bloggers , who could not afford services such as Webtrends or Urchin , and is sure to lead to widespread adoption around the site publishing industry , as well as privacy concerns . Google Analytics is also probably part of a grand scale attempt to profile the web , tracking user behavior from site to site along with giving site owners an in-depth view on where their traffic comes from - and what those users do once they reach a web site . Of course , Google Analytics tracks all of your non-AdWords initiatives as well .

You can track sub domains within the same profile as the domain. In order to do so, you'll need to add a line to the tracking code on each page of the subdomain . It appears Google Analytics keeps all the information about user behavior from all sites using Google Analytics permanently , online , and available for various analyses with 250Tb's of storage . Mind you , Google had previously charged $199 per month for the hosted service .

Analytics enables automatic tagging of each keyword in a marketer's portfolio so it can be easily tracked within the application. The automatic importation of keyword pricing data is also supported, enabling users to track ROI . Marketers may also use the application to track initiatives in other channels: email, banner ads, etc.

The fact that Google records unique cookie ID , plus IP number , plus date and time , makes much of your information "identifiable ." Authorities can also do a "sneak and peek" search of a Google user's hard drive when he/she isn't home , retrieve a Google cookie ID, and then get a keyword search history from you for this ID . Google corporate motto is " Don't be evil ."

Just so you know the ads come from tribalfusion.com/j.ad .. Tribalfusion Tracking Cookie is a small text or data file that is saved (set) onto your computer to track your browsing activities. Generally , tracking cookies are set by persistent 3rd party web sites . If you are visiting a web site that displays content from another web site ( such as an advertiser site ) the 3rd party sites can put tracking cookies on your computer which retain your browsing information , such as which links you clicked on . Tracking cookies can be accessed by other web sites .

This is part of Google's policy for their members that use , Google Analytics .
7. PRIVACY . You will not ( and will not allow any third party to ) use the Service to track or collect personally identifiable information of Internet users , nor will You ( or will You allow any third party to ) associate any data gathered from Your website(s) ( or such third parties' website(s) ) with any personally identifying information from any source as part of Your use ( or such third parties' use ) of the Service . You will have and abide by an appropriate privacy policy and will comply with all applicable laws relating to the collection of information from visitors to Your websites . You must post a privacy policy and that policy must provide notice of your use of a cookie that collects anonymous traffic data .

Not only is it International Internet Laws on cookie's its also Google's policy to provide notice of website owners use of a cookie let alone cookies' .. Haven't seen any thing in plain view on that .

Sheqel is the one who put it here and has control of most of the data that comes from it . He could narrow it down so it only gives a report on the total traffic not ever inch . As everyone knows for a fact nothing is free there is always somekind of trade off , Google Analytics prays that people will over look that fact . The price for this service is your IP address's location of where you are plus the site you were at before you came to MT . I seen were some of MT members said that they had seen a porn ad , guess what that means - they came from a porn site to MT .

I don't understand when looking at many sites with Adsense ads on them , all the competitors links are in the ads . Why would any site, for any amount of money want to send visitors to their competitors ? Sure , you can filter them out , but you can't catch all of them . Moreover , from what I have seen , many sites don't bother .

I also have a concern about spyware and adware . With the threat of spyware and adware out there , how do we know that something isnâ?t being downloaded on our visitors computers through a link from an ad ?

Guess I will be the odd man out and stick with just putting affiliate links on my site's cause I prefer to make my visitors my first priority not my pocket book . Believe it or not , with very little work on my part I make pretty good money .
