David Scott Arney, 24, of Heidelberg West, admitted punching his daughter Rachael on about 10 occasions before she died last December, aged five months.

"That way if I had any issues at all, you know ... I can just start punching into it and get out the anger."

it doesn't matter if he was stressed or what not. The point is he shouldn't have done it all. Even though the mother wanted to put the baby up for adoption, i don't think punching the baby and abusing it is a way to save her from being put into adoption. Child abuse is child abuse and there should no reason why people do such things. Anyway, they said he was dressed in fancy clothes and a silver ring. Couldn't he afford therapy with a psychologist or something like that?

I can't believe this! I can't believe the prosecutor accepted the plea! The articles I've googled don't even mention if there was sufficient evidence, which I don't doubt there was!

This is frustrating. While intention defines if a crime is a crime, an illness as such needs treatment anyway. He should have been committed to a mental asylum! This is simply outrageous!

I was under the impression that "manslaughter" was murder without intention. The guy needs to be imprisoned. Excuse my french, but any fucking shithead that beats up his baby daughter needs a serious lesson and certainly not in a mental asylum.

btw this is pretty much a case and point to support my idea for compulsory examinations to qualify to become a parent.

In this case I say make the punishment fit the crime. He likes to hit children so how about having a professional boxer use him as a punching bag say until about a third of his bones are broken.

This is a follow up to my last post. In legal system of the United States, and possibly of others, there are three forms of punishment: Rehabilitation, deterrance, and my favorite, retribution. While deterrance and retribution are very similar, as you may or may not know, rehabilitation is to re-educate people so that they become "productive members of society."

My suggestion for the mental hospital, did not have rehabilitation in mind. I was thinking more along the lines of giving him a padded room, wrapping him up in a straight jacket. And let him sit, alone, for ten, twenty, thirty years, or maybe for life. Not to mention keeping him alive and moving him around when he least expects it, and when he is most comfortable. Such as waking him up while he is in the middle of sleeping. Give him an hour of sunlight and exercise a day, but he has to remain solitary.

Psychology is fun, no? Unfortunately, most countries won't allow you to do that since it could be considered "cruel and unusual punishment."

I think that the prosecutor should have at least tacked on battery (or assault, depending on where you live) and added a few more years. Also, he has done it once, what prevents him from having another "angry moment" and killing another person? If only the legal system was slightly harsher.

Sounds like this sorry piece of S*** is a selfish person. To do this to a child and then kill the child. Wot a LOSER. If the SoB didn't want a child, he should have either abstain from sex or took the measures to prevent it. The same w/ the woman. I must agree w/ the previous person (Kidder san) on "manditory parenting" before getting married/ having kids.

Now that the person if "off the hook", who's the same that he won't do it again w/ another woman's child or even kill another person. I don't buy the idea that if he would have purchased a "punching bag" to relive his fustrastion, that is a bunch of S*** !

To me, this person was not ready to accept the responsibilities of being a parent let along becoming a father.

Gomennasai for my feelings being expressed, this P***** me off that too many people are getting off on this madness.

A similiar event took place in West Carrollton, Ohio. Go to www.daytondailynews.com on 2006.07.15 (mother sets fire to home, kills two children) sigh !

There is no punishment harsh enough for someone who defiles the sacred trust of being a parent. I don't, by any stretch of the imagination, think that manslaughter is enough.

Ugh....... why would he rape boys? What a fag... O_o

In a serious note, I guess this is how it is in today's society. People are afflicted by mistreatment, they are ignored and silenced, and they just don't get what they want. I agree all these cases sicken me, I also think I'm lucky to be in a good home where my safety is assured.

And the justice system also is morally different from our point of view. As long as you put up a good story, it sometimes allows the law to be on your side. Obviously, in a wide public view, what he did was morally wrong. But the justice system is used so the cause and reason needs to be finely tuned in to an appropriate punishment. I also agree that some of these aholes need more years in that prison, definitely a life for murder.

Unfortunately, America's Constitution protects such people from "Cruel and Unusual Punishment" (I still favor the electric chair for people like this). Poor little girl. It is probably for the better that she died though. Think of what it would have been like growing up in a household such as that.
