i always wonder why the gorvernment banned chewing gum in my country Singapore... And now after 10 years since the government ban it, Flu or SARS has cause death and nationwide scare among us all... Now it make sense why chewing gum is banned... Reason for ban given by government is because people tends to leave its residue behind on benches (yucks) but the real main reason was that it could cause diseases.. Now this i call a reasonable ban...

And now i heard that in Malaysia that they recently banned people from calling their child certain... Names that is a name of an animal or insect or having names that is 'Royal' is banned... Kinda ridiculous dont you think wasting time on matters of little importance.... Banning betting would have been a better approach

Well i just wondering if other Country has some unique bans that is enforced ionly in their country that you might like to share ;)

Well, I know that the Chinese government suppresses a lot of things, such as the Tiananmen Square incident, which inspired many of the Warsaw Pact countries to seek independence from Soviet Russia and cede from the USSR. I remember a Frontline episode on the infamous "Tank man" who stood infront of a column of tanks, which actually stopped for him. I doubt many youth in China know about him. Being Chinese American, this concerns me.

Though, Americans seem to be able to say everything, the government has engaged in at least a few coverups, I'm sure. Also, the separation of Church and State, which is not really unique in the Western world, does seem to spark some controversy in the more conservative groups of religious people.

Well...been an fellow Singaporean ... ;) the ban on chewing Gum was fairly reasonable.

But you might have heard that , in about 4 years from now, we will be implementing a curfew on a Smoke-Free Country. Of Which is really a big crack down for all smokers be it local or tourist. Smokers will have to be in a yellow box to be permitted to smoke.

Cigarettes prices will be really high. Gee... i don't smoke but i pity for them in the future. -.-

About how true and how fast the plan is going i am clueless for the moment but that's what i heard about it from my officers in my national service times....shhh, confidential only to MT only. =X

Well as far as the separation of church and state "ban" this is a good idea since everytime religion has gotten involved in government people end up gettin killed. Government is responsible for the physical well being of the people and the church is responsible for the spiritual wellbeing. They don't mix all that well.

You want to see some really interesting banning try searching for outdated or odd laws on teh net. I found one that stated that iguanas are not allowed to drive motor vehicles because they can look two different directions at once.

I think that if the governments have time to ban things like chewing gum, then they should have the time to help their nation prosper or pass more important laws or bans.

Anyways, Recife, Brazil, banned surfing after a series of shark attacks. Surfers' boards are confiscated and if they can afford to pay the fine, they get their board back, but because the majority of surfers can't, the boards are burned. Even tourists aren't allowed to surf. I don't know if it's just Recife or Brazil as a whole though, I'm just telling you what I learned during the Discovery Channel's Shark Week specials.

I have nothing against a surifng ban. I don't surf and I'm land-locked, so it doesn't bother me.

That supposed US ban on one of the Final Fantasy games (I think FFVII) is really stupid.

One of my friends lives in singapore and told me about some of the bans like the gum...

the USA bans a lot of things for odd reasons *especially games and such* which I think is UBER DUMB since places like japan don't have them baned but have a 10x lower homicide rate with worse games than we do. I mean COME ON... Like americans care about "protecting their children" when they are the ones abusing them and ignoring them. Why take away our amusement and outlet of frustration.

Well I live in the US and we don't really ban anything except to ensure the safety of our citizens such as banning the sale of alcohol to minors. Other than that I don't think we ban anything. Although I have heard in some states there are weird bans like you can't wear skirts after Labor Day in Missouri or something...I forget...

I thought the US doesn't ban games they just have the ESRB rating and warning on the boxes.

Certain states can pass bans on specific games if they wish but it's not a federal thing. (I remember reading about a ban in Michigan on some 25-to-life game because it 'teaches children to shoot at cops' or some BS like that.)

oh, excuse me, it was almost banned, was even supported by the governor, but a federal judge overturned it. Whew!
