Personally, I think that instant messagers have replaced chat rooms. I mean, they're so much more versatile. With an IM engine you can have a list of friends, you can tell when they're online, and in some cases you can tell what games they're playing. Plus, instant messagers are more private. They're still not private, but they are more so.
But that's just me ;)

Nope don't use them unless you consider an MMORPG a biiig chatroom :D I do not go into chat rooms as often because usually they are bots that are tryiing to give out porn and that really annoys me. Waste of space and just hard to sift through it all. People also can be annoying in rooms also :\

Totally agree with him.... the chatrooms now has become a nuisance instead of a chat room.... this extra hackers add these dumb bots ... looking for sex.... it is really annoying seeeing how some people find these pranks amusing..
At the end of the day, i would always turn around and say.... "Egao Saku... "

Personally, I don't think people consider chatrooms as an immediate option anymore. I mean, sometime ago( or so I thought ^_^'), chatrooms were very visible and lots of people were participating, but now, well let's just say they aren't the " fad " nowadays. Some users actually contributed to this because of extreme rudeness, lack of online ethics and overtly lewd topics x_x. So, nope, I don't really consider chatrooms as very viable these days. Although of course, the interface in MMORPG's still remind me of them. :)
By the way, thanks for the welcome. I really appreciate it. :D

I started using chat when I was 13, then I lost interest a few days later. I communicate through forums, regular ol' email + AIM.
With current affairs, I think people don't trust chat rooms anymore. I think more parents have started blocking their kids and teens from chat sites and adults have become less open and look for alternative ways to socialize. IM has also definitely decreased the popularity of chat rooms.
