have your mom view- "Grave of the Fireflies". anime is like just about any other art form be it, lyrical poetry [music], a painting, a graphic novel, or a movie; as Sturgeon's law states "90% of art is crap"- you need to find the other 10%.

Wow, that's really stupid. You should have a nice talk with your mom and tell her that this dude's full of crap and explain why your interest in anime is important to you. As DREAM suggested, maybe siting down with her and watching a Miyazaki movie is a good idea too.

Also, you're not seven. I wouldn't let my parents control my interests. ;)

More To It Then Meets The Eye...

Hey, are you sure your mom was SERIOUS about banning you from anime? Because I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. I'm 19, and my parents tell me to quit anime because it's for "kids" and whatnot. It doesn't help that my bro (he's 20), eggs them on and tells them that I should watch J-Dramas instead of anime. But I know they're not serious, because they know that I don't watch TV that much anyways, and they're aware that I have a life outside anime (i.e. tennis, piano, etc.)

In your case, I think you should bring up the fact that anime is just another hobby for you (if it's more than that, say it's a hobby, anyways. Who knows what would happen if you said it was an "obsession" lol), and that you enjoy other things outside of it, like sports and whatnot. Considering that your mom seems pretty set against anime already, I'd advise you not show her anime (because based on my experience, parents associate anime with cartoons, and cartoons are "childish"). Then agian if your mom's pretty open-minded, more power to you.

Man, I wish my mom was cool. You know over Christmas Break, my WHOLE family finished a WHOLE drama (Kimi Wa Petto) in one sitting? We sat in front of the TV for 11 hours (no joke), because my bro hooked up his laptop to the TV. They love dramas, they hate anime. I wish they could like both. Good luck, dude.

From the ashes, reborn.

Ok, I saw this and was instantly pissed off.
First of all, you're an otaku. Anime is your lifeblood pretty much. It's something you NEED.

Secondly, and this is what really f*cks me around, is that your Mom (who sounds evil from my perspective) is going to BAN you from watching an artform on the grounds that it messes with your brain. Yet she's going to sit down at the TV and watch things like the War in Iraq and Georgies' next genious plan to boycott drugs and homosexuality for his mistakes. Blood, death, murder, violence, hate, sorrow, apocalypse, nuclear weaponry on the news.

Now, call me cynical, but something doesn't seem to add up....
That sh*t is called HYPOCRACY!11one
So here's what you do. Turn on the TV and watch something nasty with your mother watching (Or if you have a PS2, play with one of those gun things, that gets them worried), then turn on Pokemon, or some other washed out, moral-filled crap.
"Hmmm, this annny-may thing doesn't seem so bad"

But if all else fails, there are fansubs and hentai to enjoy.

So, Enjoy!

What's so funny about Peace, Love and Understanding?

Welcome to the club. My mom tries to prevent me from watching anime in any way she can. BUT, she doesn't know that you can download off of the internet! Now I just watch fansubs 24/7! Maybe you could just download episodes! (depending on you connection. If you need help finding a good, quick place to download, feel free to PM me and I'll give you some good places! I cannot let a fellow otaku die like this! OTAKU FOR LIFE!

i can't grieve with you. and that's because you can still watch animes, because you have a computer and you can download them from the internet. but if you are so weak, that you always listen to your mother and always do what she tells you to do, then i do feel sory for you, because in your life you should stand up for yourself, or else, you won't achieve nothing in life.

Heaven smiles upon you young one. Bask in your good fortune and don't do anything that might remind your mom of her earlier ruiling.

You can explain to your mum that what good for anime. eg. you can know more about Japanese culture, you can learn their drawing & editing skills, even the creativity. Maybe there are violence, sex & something not good inside anime but its even at movie also.Try to explain to her & state some good example to her. Maybe some otaku around you can study well too. I think ur mum is worry about anime will affect your study. Then prove it to her that you can study well even with anime.
Try to be patient & use ur mouth. if that person can convinced ur mum so do you too! ;)

But then again, my parents have banned me from Anime for years now, and that hasn't stopped me. ;) And they've gone as far as throwing the DVD's in the bin. >_> Just be stubborn as hell, in as nice a way as possible and they'll eventually get the message that you love it and don't wanna give it up. They may not like it, but it hey it worked for me. :) I wish you luck my friend! :pacman:

yup, no typo there as of today, in the otaku that doesn't watch anime

Im pissed beyond all reason.......

Please grieve with me.........

how does anime mess with ur brain when EVERYTHING in this world is fu***** messed up?

did i change alittle?

Well, I suppose you could really just watch online without your mother knowing. You can try to convince her that it's just a cartoon. My parents don't even know what anime is. They just think it's another cartoon. If you can't talk to your mom, you can always go to a friend's and watch or something like that.

Let's all be happy!

whoa nice one dude, guess your mom just forgot? Or she reasoned it out in her mind?

We're All Mad Here.

I'm sorry to hear that. Like many have said, it might help if you try talking to your mom about it. Anime itself is not bad, just like live-action movies are not inherently bad. You just have to pick and choose carefully what you watch. I think that bootlegging and going behind her back is a bad idea though, because thats only going to make things worse for your case if she finds out, I would think.

It's also true that very few are truly "pure", but if it's your mother you should be able to know what her boundaries are for decency. I was able to get my mother to watch shows with me before: Magic Knight Rayearth was the first, and then others like Fruits Basket and Angelic Layer (that right there is about as clean and Kid-friendly as you can get, next to Clamp Campus Detectives ^_^' ).

If you can show her that you are responsible with what you watch you might have a good chance. Good luck to you!

I'm sorry to hear that though. I might die if my mom did that. *nods*

that's just plain stupid... "anime messes your brain"... In fact I think reading manga and watching anime can develop one's imagination and rationality, just the same thing everybody says about reading, that how it developes one's intellect. And if your native language is not english it is very useful to learn english while reading anime subs or manga =D
