I actually like the current style of Zuru, with the pencil crosshatching-like shading kept in, and sort of airbrushed/dodged. But you can always try to vector or cell-shade to experiment ;)
as for colouring, I like the current colours because they're soothing to the eyes. Or you can experiment with tans or other warmer colours, or go pastel and see how it looks on him ^^
