A/ i/RECENTLY IN MINITOKYO...

Lost Passwords

Aye. Lost Passwords are a pain, but now you should be able to get your lost passwords fairly quickly through your nearest moderator! Once we verify that you have indeed lost your password, we will email you your new one. *happy dance*

Please note that if you have indeed lost your password, it is best to email your nearest moderator, or email another member of Minitokyo (someone you know well, a friend, or again a moderator) to get back the password. In the instance of emailing a friend, ask your friend to PM a moderator to request a new password. We may need to verify that the password you are requesting is indeed your account, so we might ask for psds of your gallery works just to be sure! ;)

If you have lost your password, please refrain from creating a second account just to tell us you have lost your password. Emailing a moderator is your absolute best option :)

Tutorials

Sick of googling for tutorials, just to find that the tutorials don't really help? Once you find a tutorial, do you feel that it doesn't suit your needs?
Minitokyo will soon have its very own tutorials section, written by the members, for the members.

A/ ii/ASK A MOD! Mai-chan's mailbag

Have a question? Want to ask a mod something? About Minitokyo or the MTM? Here're the answers! To ask a question, PM MTM (subject: MY VOICE).

The following text was written by kuroimisa

MTM Content

Although this isn't directed at any particular response, I would like to clarify that the MTM is not a magazine. MTM is a monthly communal newsletter with magazine like qualities such as articles and features, but the main focus will remain on Minitokyo. We will from time to time add in articles about anime and anything we find interesting, however we can only make this possible if a group of members can step up and write something about it: preferably having a good knowledge on the topic. (to volunteer, PM Mt-Maigetsu)

Having said that it's a communal newsletter, it will recap on the month's significant past developments, activities and news. Yes, you can dig out the whole Minitokyo forum and find every single thing that will happen in the next month, but chances are, those threads may not get the same readership as the MTM, and we will cover a lot of material you can and can't find in the forums comprehensively in the one place. (eg. you won't be able to find our news on recent developments until they actually get implemented)

The MTM will be extremely useful for members who don't frequent Minitokyo on a daily basis, and will be a rather rich slab of text on the month's "must know".

MTM Format

Having said "slab of text", the most accessible format of the MTM is a forum thread.
Although it is static, it is fast to load for all members regardless of being on broadband or on dial up (yep, that stuff still exists XD). Reading the MTM as a thread is rather self explanatory- we will add more images to break up the text- plus you can't beat having the quick reply box at the bottom of the page.
The moderator team has looked into the matter of creating an alternate "funky layout" non-thread webpage format for those who want to read in image-rich style.
From a personal point of view, the format of the MTM is not a priority- compiling the content is much more important. Once we've got things under control and compiling content is easy as 1-2-3, we will definitely see to improve the format, and create 2 versions of the MTM- the good ole thread, plus an alternate page complete with css :)

MTM Length

The poll of the MTM#1 has shown that a few of readers feel the MTM should be longer in length. About 2 more votes said the MTM was too long to read.

MTM being too short
I would like to stress the fact that Issue1 was put together in less than a week, and with very few PMs sent to us regarding the content. We are constantly in need of group and member nominations, and also MY VOICE PMs- don't be shy! XD

MTM being too long
We've obviously opted for making our MTMs longer despite 2 extra votes saying they're too long, simply because if we made the MTM any shorter: 1) there wouldn't be much to read to recap on a whole month and some insight into the next month 2) we figured you might not read it anyway if it was any shorter.

MTMs will be longer :D!

SPECIFIC PMs

The following was answered by littlejonny100

We've had a few members post our to dear sweet Mai-chan with various questions and comments; You have not gone unheard! If any member or comment was missed we're sorry and next time, TYPE LOUDER!

First up many have questioned about MiniTokyo having a shoutbox put back in. Currently there are no plans or considerations to ever have another shoutbox. Our reasoning is that an open system like that is open to abuse, hard to effectively moderate and will, in the end, result in lots of puppies and anime couples crying.

NB: Questions have been paraphrased.

Quote by yui20Could the MT gallery have tags?

Adding tags to gallery items would certainly be a lovely feature that could be added, however at this stage in MiniTokyos life such an addition would require a massive overhaul of the site and it's already established upload/search systems. Even if a simple system was implemented there would be close to 100,000 gallery items that would then need to be revised and updated. A monster of a task for any amount of people, remembering that mods aren't paid for their work. Why fix what's not really broken?

Quote by yui20Could you please define mature content more clearly?

Yui20 asked a question about how the moderators judge whether a gallery item is considered 'mature'. Directly from the policy I'll say "Minitokyo considers an image to be mature content if it is explicitly pornographic, contains scenes of sexual acts, undressing, sexual poses, extreme violence, and any other imagery deemed non-suitable for a family audience by the Minitokyo staff." Naturally there are grey areas and to be completely honest to your question; Yes, different moderators have a slightly different view of what's mature. We all rule from the same foundation and all we ask is that you realise our different judgements are all aimed to maintain a family friendly environment.

Misa also would like to add: Anything sexually suggestive in nature (undressing and poses) and just about anything not work safe will be deleted. Artistic nudity should be okay, but having said artistic, it must be tasteful.
Last but not least, just because "the scan's in the gallery, why was my wall deleted?!" it doesn't mean it's not eligible for deletion!. If your wallpaper or artwork was deleted because of mature content, simply enquire/ report the scan in question- it's very possible we either 1) possibly it wasn't as mature as we initially thought it was or 2) skipped over and missed the mature scan.
The same applies if you have a scan that's deleted and you feel that there are even more existing 'mature' scans in the gallery- simply report them :)

Quote by yui20How are scans judged? Why can't we submit scans with lots of text on it, afterall, it's the downloader's choice to spend their credits on whatever images they want to download?

In terms of scan quality it is unconditionally controlled by the scan moderators and they are generally lenient. If you find they are not so lenient the simple reason is they're trying to maintain a high standard within their section. Unlike other galleries there isn't an elite item system in place to separate the greater quality scans. If a scan is impracticable or insufficient quality it must simply be removed.

Misa says: With the whole text thing, we've got the Anime Pictures Dump. Yes it is possible to make stuff out of scans with text, but if it's heavily bombarded with text, it's not ideal. Why do we have such a high scan standard? It's not to accommodate for the more savvy artists- in fact it's in place so it makes it easier for even beginners. If most of the scans are HQ, then using the scans won't be a burden- which will make beginners feel much more comfortable- just my interpretation of the minimal text criteria ;)

Quote by yui20Can we organise the Unknown and Other sections better?

A reminder of the difference between the Unknown and the Other gallery.

Unknown - You have no idea what anime the scan is from or who made it but are confident that it hasn't been uploaded to any gallery yet. Occasionally this section is sorted and some unknown items are placed in their correct category.

Other - You know what anime/artist made a piece however it does not yet have it's own official category. You clearly write the artist/anime details in the gallery description to indicate this. In the future a category may be made for this gallery item and it will be easily findable and put in the right place.

Misa says: To compliment what Jonny has said, the search option is your best friend ;D

===

Thanks again to Yui20 for her comments and we hope we hope that A) This answered your questions; B) This answered many other peoples questions and C) We didn't miss anything.

===

Quote by AnjhurinCould you give us an update on the Tabs Contest?

Official Minitokyo Control Panel Icon Contest Extended
Obliged to tell the truth, the contest probably didn't go as well as planned however in the end Tama-Neko was the contest winner. As to whatever happened to the icons being used.....Well this is Ask-A-Mod and we're not exactly sure ourselves.

(We don't really know when they'll be implemented- if it pops up we'll keep you posted! ^.^)

===

We've had Morphee and a few others who enjoyed the interview in the last Issue. Originally this was a way to introduce the idea of the MTM however have now decided we'll try to include interviews in more Issues or until everyone becomes really bored of them.

That concludes August's "Your Voice - Ask-A-Mod" section. We thank all members who contributed even if we were unable to acknowledge you. Remember: If you don't ask, we wont tell so keep those mails coming!

B/ DID YOU KNOW?
Part II: Fun with Custom Userpage and Scans

It's raining outside, and you don't really feel like doing anything. Flipping on the TV, you see nothing that you like. Suddenly, you remember your online expedition last night. Swiftly, you jump to the computer and log in.

Upon spotting the 5 under your Free Downloading Quota, you go on a small downloading spree. Unfortunately, it doesn't last very long because soon you're out of credits again. But there were still 20 more pictures you want to download! What do you do? If you wait 'til tomorrow, you may not remember where the pictures are. In a stroke of genius, you hit the "Add to Favourites" button underneath the thumbnail, instead of using your browser's bookmark function, which is actually much easier and quicker. You do this for all 35 pictures you had open. There, now you can come back later to download when you have the credits.

Bored, you decide to explore around. You go into the Control Panel and see all these buttons. Ooh, what's "Customize User Content?" Curious, you decide to check it out. You arrive at a page with a box saying "This XHTML will appear on your userpage".

Ah, so that's how you put stuff on your page. Excited, you open the file with all the quiz answers you've been saving in the past while, copy all 253 lines of code, paste it in that little window, and click "update". But you feel that something is still missing. Your little page isn't fancy enough! So you surf the Internet to those sites that generate sparkly text, and generate some "welcome", "Popular-chan", and "Sasuke is hawt!1!1" images. And while you're at it, you also generated some scrolling text saying "Asucaga 4eva!". There. Now you have shiny things to make your page attractive. Oh wait, you remember this really awesome Sasuke AMV you found on Youtube some time ago. So you go and find it, and stick it proudly on your MT userpage. Last, but not least, you find a free music player to put on your page, playing your favourite and loudest anime music and set it to auto play. That ought to get people's attention.

But wait, your page is still that dark grey colour with the generic anime girl on it. You want to make it much more personal by making it bright pink and purple, your favourite colours, and have pictures of Sasuke instead. You read the Custom Userpage Layout Tutorial *MTv3* , but the slicing stuff sounds very confusing, and you're still a Photoshop n00b. Whatever. You stick some screenshots together, upload it into your Skin Builder, input various shades of pink and purple, and name your skin "sASuKe RoX". Yay it works! You now have your very own userpage skin.

With your page fully customized, you decide to go credit-hunting. Because after all, if you were to survive here, you would need credits. Oh look, somebody replied to that thread you made, and mentioned that uploading a scan can give you 4 credits. Really? It's really that easy?

Flipping through your archives, you find a picture of cool-looking Sasuke, and decide to upload it. You got through the uploading process, excited that you're finally able to gain some credits. But wait, what's this?! It gives you an error, saying that your image is too small! That's not cool! Fine. You go into Photoshop and add some margins around your image. That should fit the size requirements. Thinking quickly, you put a bunch of screencaps together and upload the image. Yay, 4 more credits! Hey wait, if they said the image was too small, why not just make it bigger? So you use Photoshop and stretched a CLAMP picture you found a while ago. Wow, getting credits was easier than you thought!

But that was rather tedious, having to modify pictures. So you go on Google to find bigger images. You stumble across a site called Anime Project Alliance. Wow, so many scans! And you don't even have to modify them. You didn't bother checking the policy to see that it is one of the sites you're not supposed to upload images from, or if those images were already in the gallery. You don't care. All you want are those easy credits.

Now that POpUlaR-cHaN has shared some of her favourite pictures and has her own userpage, she is well on her way to popularity.

To be continued...

C/ CULT CLASSIC

This week we have a DOUBLE article! Hands together for UV :D

Cult Classic fans, welcome back for MTM's second instalment of the article that gives you a picture in picture view of anime and manga from the heart of Japan, right throughout the world!
This month we go back in time to unearth the roots of one of Japan's most renowned Sci-Fi/Horror heroes and trace his path of glory from the past right up to the present.
Who is he?
Why, none other than the legendry Vampire Hunter D!
Fans of D stay tuned; for this is an issue you simply won't want to miss!
AND: You asked for it, we heard you! Cult Classic is expanding its boarders with the all new 'Cult Classic: By Request' this month. We've received plenty of letters from readers suggesting headline anime and manga titles to be put under the Cult Classic spotlight. This month's CC: By Request goes to the ever-popular double season anime series, Kaleido Star.
En Guard!
I'm your Cult Classic writer,
Trekking Modern History & Beyond
UV ^__^

This Month: A Cult Classic Highlight

Biting Back: Vampire Hunter D

"The rider sat on his horse but made no answer. She couldn't see his face very well because he had a wide-brimmed traveller's hat low over his eyes.... Judging from his powerful frame and the combat utility belt, half revealed from his faded black long coat, it was safe to say he was no seasonal labourer or merchant dealing with scattered villages. A blue pendent hanging just below his scarf reflected the girl's pensive expression. Her large eyes fixed to the longsword strapped to his back...."

And thus, the legend of Vampire Hunter D was born.
The D phenomenon swept through Japan as master horror author Hideyuki Kikuchi took his most profound inspiration from Britain's renowned Hammer House Horror films. In particular, those of the 'House of Dracula' persuasion, casting the multitalented actor Christopher Lee. Kikuchi is often found making references to these groundbreaking films in the postscripts of his work.
And so; in 1983 when hard horror and gore was all the rage in film and literature, Hideyuki Kikuchi and companion highly acclaimed illustrator, Yoshitaka Amano teamed together in the novelisation that not only merged two very different genres (those being Science Fiction and Horror) together successfully, but likewise brought to life a character whose mysterious history and engaging adventures left readers shambling to the book selves for more.

Since 1983's first release of the novel entitled 'Vampire Hunter D', Kikuchi has successfully produced a staggering 32 Japanese novels and numerous short stories further encapsulating the breathtaking adventures of this half human, half vampire hybrid hero like no other.
And that wasn't all! In 1985 D's success launched from the pages of his novels and onto the big screen. For the first time ever 'Vampire Hunter D' the feature length animated film produced by Epic/SONY Inc and licensed by Urban Vision gave audiences around the world the D experience first hand.
Cartoon Express called 'Vampire Hunter D' "A true masterpiece of its time..." while Tips & Tricks magazine said: "...A unique mix of sci-fi technology and vintage medieval horror while telling a classic vampire story."

So there was the fame! But what was it all about?
"In the year 12,090 AD, the Earth has fallen into the clutches of ruthless vampires. Humans are enslaved by a corrupt feudal system. Only one being has dared to challenge the cruel authority of these arrogant immortals - the mysterious Vampire Hunter called "D"."
Under the direction of Toyoo Ashida the 1985 release of 'Vampire Hunter D' became the sophisticated Gothic thriller that by far confirmed its status as an exceptional accomplishment in Japanese animation. Thus, a worthy Cult Classic by any standard.

The VHD film thrilled audiences with its powerful vocal cast, fluid animation and entirely faithful reproduction of the original novel.
Post VHD film release, Dark Horse and Digital Manga Publishing won English translation licensing for Kikuchi's acclaimed D novels in the May of 2005. To date 7 of the 32 Vampire Hunter D novels have been translated into English with thanks to Kevin Leahy. More than 17 million VHD books are currently in print worldwide. Now that's something to talk about!

But is that enough?
The great Vampire Hunter D proved his resilient immortality in the August of 2000 when the second feature length fully animated film 'Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust' exploded onto big screens throughout the United States and around the world! The first anime film to reach cinema status in the US, Europe and Australia. Madhouse and Urban Vision outdid themselves yet again. Bloodlust was acclaimed: "A sheer apocalyptic epic..." From the writer and director of Ninja Scroll and Wicked City, Yoshiaki Kawajiri left us spellbound and amazed!
VHD: Bloodlust faithfully reproduced Kikuchi's third VHD novel: 'Demon Deathchase' down to the finest detail. Gone were the former humble beginnings of 2D flat panel animation. Madhouse Studios in tandem with MOVIC, Satelight, ANIMATE and Filmlink International cast off the restrictions of 1980s colour pallets and limited technology, this time producing D in gloriously structured high resolution CGI backdrops. Character animation was superbly rendered in fluid zero-lag frame-to-frame sequencing giving movement and combat an ultra realistic edge.
The end result left an entirely new generation of fans forever fond of this renowned figure in black. Vampire Hunter D scribed as an undisputable legend of our time.

D/ FEATURED MEMBER

This month, we would like to recognise one of our oldest members in the Minitokyo community- in fact, 666 years old ;) DREAM (otherwise known as 'Lord DREAM') is known best in the galleries for his incredible scan collection. Not only are his scans high quality, they are also rare scans that you will probably not find elsewhere. DREAM has also been a great member in and out of the community, judging for several art competitions, the latest being "areteii".
DREAM is probably not as well known for his useful tutorials and gallery comments as much as his input to the gallery, but the time and dedication he has put into helping others out and uploading scans even with a busy life style demands a standing ovation.
Thank you for sharing your rare scans with us, DREAM- You rock! XD

F/ GET TO KNOW YOUR MT STAFF!
Hi there! fireflywishes here to bring you yet another in-depth interview with one of our dear forum Mods, Spystreak!

fireflywishes(F): So the question that is probably most in the minds of our readers (or at least mine ;)) is where did you get the title of "Grim Reaper"?
Spystreak (S): Can't really explain it myself but I have this morbid fascination with the Grim Reaper...well that and I just like Duo from GW a lot (he's not as well known as the Grim Reaper hehe) (firefly note: GW= Gundam Wing)

F: Well, now that one mystery has been solved... onto the serious stuff. ;) What exactly do you do as a forum Mod?
S: Ugh. That question. To put it simply: answer member questions, look for bumped threads, search for spammers. That and I also make sure threads aren't just advertisements for a site. From time to time I also change those ALL BOLDED TITLES. Gah, it pisses me off so much when I see them.

F: Along the lines of ALL BOLDED TITLES, what is the most common mistake that members make when participating in the forums?
S: Most common... that's a bit hard to say exactly but the most common would be grammar and cursing...actually scratch grammar, it's really just spelling.
F: Yea, we've got some very creative spellers in the MT community
S: Let's just say I get a headache after about 4 or 5 threads

F: So, what has been the weirdest thread topic that you've ever read/participated in?
S: Haha haha......can I get back to you on that? I've seen a lot of weird ones...

F: Okay, okay. I'll let you off the hook this time. But I hope you're ready for Random Rapidfire question time! *wild applause*

F: Boxers or briefs?
S: Boxers definitely

F: Best anime ever?
S: Uhh I guess I would have to say FMA. (firefly note: that's Full Metal Alchemist for those of you who are new to the anime fandom. ;))
F: Nice choice! What makes it #1 for you?
S: I just like the humor mixed with the seriousness... that and it has a very interesting but depressing plot.

F: What do you do in your spare time? (besides come on MT of course!)
S: Various things-- hang out, play some video games. Recently though I've been messing around with my old Legos. Why? I dunno.

F: If you were a piece of furniture, what would you be?
S: WTF!?!?! I guess a fridge
F: Oooo, interesting! Why a fridge?
S: I like food and I can tend to be cold and unfeeling at times *shrugs*

F: Song you could play on repeat all day and never get tired of it...
S: "My Plague" by Slipknot or "Real Me" (megara vs DJ Lee remix) by Ayumi Hamasaki

F: Well, that looks like it'll just about wrap it up for this month's Mod Interview! Is there anything else you'd like to add before we go?
S: Nothing really other then Holy Crap is Bush a moron. Hehe, I love saying that.

Hmm... why not have members submit a few articles to the moderators regarding MT and choose a certain few to post in the next Maigetsu issue? :D

We would gladly welcome this- however the only requests we had were some questions we answered in the "Ask a mod/ mailbag" section.

So far, no members have sent in "articles" as such to Mai-chan (PM Subject: MY VOICE with your content in the PM)!

Yay for the second issue! I'm glad that everyone is enjoying it!

Also, if any of the members have any requests/questions they'd like me to ask any of the Mods in an interview (NOT the mailbag), send them my way!

'Til next month then!

Oh, tutorials? That sounds like a great idea! Especially because I don't usually find exactly what I'm looking for >_< Now we'll know the deepest secrets of the best wallers here! That is, if they're kind enough to share them with us :) Nonetheless, it's a very good idea, and I'm looking forward to it!

I don't think tags would be a good option, specifically from the point of view of how much time and hard work would be needed to accomplish such a task. I'm not good at this kind of things, but I can picture it's quite a lot of work to do!

Vampire Hunted D and Kaleido Star! I love to see two of my favorite anime series discussed here :)

MapleRose, I admire your sarcasm :) I always read your articles with a slight grin -it's sad that things sometimes do happen like that thought...

Well, looking forward to the next issue! I must say I enjoyed this one :) Keep up the great work!

Oh~ It's really surprise me that you have explained the stuff from my PM =3 ~
Well, I think you guys do answer the questions really great ^^.

Great job in this issue =3 ~ But I dun really like the Cult Classic's section ._. ~
You guys should probably introduce some new animes coming up in the summer, that would be great.

For me, the issue wasnt that bad, you guys did put lots of afford on it, but then, I dun really feel it's really important use for me either, and not really like useless ... something in the middle ^^ ~

I am looking forward on the next one hehe ^^ keep up the good work

Hello There Boys & Girls! ^___^
I'm delighted to see that the second edition has been met with such a warm reception from the general audience yet again! The entire Mod Team have worked very hard this month to compile all the feedback they received from Members across the board and bring about this super huge issue! Double thumbs up! ^___^

Secondarily, a warm thanks to all Cult Classic readers whom have already left their feedback. Regardless of what you have to say about the articles your thoughts on up-coming submissions are very important and naturally I want to hear from you either direct via PM or through MTM's PM inbox, where I'm certain your ideas will be forwarded to me.

Members: Don't Forget: ^__^
1) Cult Classic articles will feature modern (meaning the very latest) anime and manga productions as well as timeless classics (older, groundbreaking stuff) on a rotating by-monthly basis! If the old stuff isn't your kind of scene, don't fret; the new stuff is more than likely coming soon in the next edition. :D

2) CULT CLASSIC: BY REQUEST NEEDS YOU!
That's right lad and lasses!
Have you got an anime or manga title you want featured in next month's CC: By Request? Then what are you waiting for? Christmas? Send it in NOW! :D :D :D
Regardless of whether or not it's an old or new title, simply give me the name and I'll do the research for you! You get the easy bit, can't get a better deal than that no? :D :D :D

Until Next Time Friends! ^__^
Love & Peace,
UV
