A/ i/ANNOUNCEMENTS

Since the next issue would be the last issue of the year, and a few holidays are happening in December, we want to know if there's anything special you would like to see, or better yet, why not write something Holiday and/or end of year-related and send it to Mai-chan!

A/ ii/ASK A MOD! Mai-chan's mailbag

Quote by ASH-HikariIs there anything one should keep in mind if they want to start a group? Or any rules not mentioned in the policy, such as minimum number of staff members, etc?

One of the main things to do before creating a new group is to check out Sheqel's thread: Want to revive an abandoned group for free? . There may already be a group on the same subject in existence that you could take over. Also keep in mind that it costs 100 credits to create a new group. By reviving an old group, it will be free. Just follow the instructions in Sheqel's thread.

Groups created with the exact same purpose are not allowed. More information about this rule can be found in the Policy

Be advised that you may not create threads in the forum to advertise your group or spam other members' guestbooks. Another thing to keep in mind is that most groups will reach a plateau after awhile... it seems inactivity or low-activity in groups is a running trend.

As far as staff members, all the group needs to have is one Administrator.

-----

Also, we at the MTM decided to tackle a question that many of you all have probably wondered at some point in time.

"Why does it say 'From botchii, with love', and not from Mai-chan?"

Here are some theories:

- Because like all siblings, botchii wants to feel included. She envies the attention Mai-chan gets from all of you--her adoring fans

- botchii is feeling jealous that her younger sister is loved more than her, even though she does more work than Mai-chan, so she snuck in and put that line there, and Mai-chan either didn't notice, or didn't mind

- Poor botchii feels lonely and unappreciated because of the bad reputation she gets for all the work she does here, and she wants to tell MT that she loves you, so don't hate her

- botchii is taking over the world, one MTM issue at a time

- "From botchii, with love" was our runner-up for the name of the monthly newsletter, before Mai-chan was born

That concludes November's "Your Voice - Ask-A-Mod" section. We thank all members who contributed even if we were unable to acknowledge you. Mai-chan feels a bit sad that she's not getting as much mail as she used to, so please keep those PMs coming!

B/ THE ADVENTURES OF POPULAR-CHAN
What Not to Do in MT

Note from author: The title of this story is now officially "The Adventures of Popular-chan", and it shall be known as such from now on.
Disclaimer: This was written purely for entertainment purposes, no offense is intended in any way. This is a work of fiction; any resemblance to real actual persons, places, or events is purely coincidental.

Part V: Oh No! My Wallpaper!

All day at school, you couldn't stop thinking about the new wallpaper you just uploaded, so soon as you get home, you jump onto MT and check your messages.

Hooray! You've got messages! And look, some are faves on your wallpaper titled "Cool Sasuke". Hmm, not as many as you hoped, but that's because your l33t artistic abilities haven't had a chance to spread through the community yet. You've even got one comment. You click on the link to go to your wallpaper, and wait impatiently for the page to load.

"Quarantaine. 'Cool Sasuke' by POpUlaR-cHaN has been placed in quarantine and cannot be viewed nor downloaded. Only the owner of the gallery item can initiate a request to return it to the gallery."

What?!?! Why can't you see your wallpaper!

Hey wait, this looks a lot like when you couldn't see your scans... So wait... That means... They deleted your wallpaper?!?!? How dare they!?

Sure enough, when you check your messages again, there's a PM from the cursed botchii, saying that your wallpaper was deleted, and a bunch of reasons were given. You spot one, that said:

"- It was a low effort wallpaper"

"Low effort"?! But you spent a whole 20 minutes on that wallpaper! And that's not counting the many hours you had to wait to download those source images! Besides, deciding on which filters to use takes a lot of effort!

You saw that you could make complaints in the Deletion Forum, so you promptly start a thread in there, demanding to know why your masterpiece was taken off the Internet.

While you wait for an answer, you decide to vent out your anger in those groups you've joined yesterday, complaining how your first wallpaper was deleted, and how unfair it was. You make as big a deal as possible out of it, so you can get the maximum amount of attention.

You're still feeling angry, so you go on a downloading spree with what little credits you've accumulated. Ah, that feels much better.

Aww, when you check back on the groups and the messages you've posted, a few people are sympathizing with you, and some are comforting you, and encouraging you. Hmm, in order to be popular, you need to have a long list of "mutual friends" displayed on your userpage, right? So you post in the guestbooks of those people who have replied to you, asking to be their friend, and without waiting for a reply, add them to your friendlist. Hey, this seems to be a good idea, when people see how many friends you have, they'll know how popular you are, and would want to be your friend too!

So you check back to those threads you've made, and ask the people who have replied to be your friend. Oh that's right, you remember posting on some random threads, and some people agreed with you. They should be on your friendlist too! Then, you decide to find the most popular artists on MT and befriend them. Because lots of people stop by their pages, and maybe you can attract people from them, and surpass their popularity!

After adding 60 people to your friendlist, you decide to check your messages again. Hey look, you've got some replies to your complaint thread. A couple are from members comforting and sympathizing with you.

One is from a moderator, telling you basically what the botchii message had said, that your wallpaper was low-effort, and she quoted the Policy, which you should have read:

Quote by Policy - no effort in integrating the background and foreground,
- "brush-whore" or "filter-whore," depending on overall quality,
- "ghosting," the use of a character image on low opacity in the background,
- collages of small scan images without visible effort at composition or incorporation

Reading that, you feel a bit... intimidated. Your anger had passed, and it seems that you sort of, kind of, did do all those things... It seems that creating a wallpaper and have it stay in the gallery is harder than it looks. But without wallpapers, your "artistic level" would stay at 0.

You heave a sigh. Maybe you should just give up.

No, you're not going to give up so easily! The path to being popular isn't easy, but giving up won't solve anything! You're gonna try again, and this time, it's gonna stay in the gallery!

But meanwhile, you decide to assemble your followers, er, friends, first. Hmm... maybe they can help you.

To be continued...

Reach For The Sky // Trigun

RATING ADVICE: The following anime title has been rated M. All episodes within this series are recommended for a mature audience. This series contains mild level animated violence and adult themes. Retail outlets may refuse the sale of this title prior to seeing Age Verifying Identification.

"The legendary Vash the Stampede is a gunfighter so ruthless that he has a $$60 Billion bounty on his head and entire towns evacuate at the rumour of his arrival. Fortunately, the real Vash the Stampede is more heroic - even if he does act like a complete idiot. Couple it with two insurance representatives trying to locate and stop him, and you've got a terrific gun slinging comedy!"

Of all the Spaghetti Western, pistol-packing, trigger-happy, Sci-Fi oddities the head Shoguns of the anime industry have ever passed off to the public as evolving animated entertainment, none have ever honestly superseded the pioneering carriage tracks left in the wake of the mighty series, 'Trigun'.

A comedic, intergalactic alternate universe adventure whose iconic red-coated hero, with his ridiculous antics and evasive genius often leaves his audience in two minds. Vash the Stampede is a mystery man with a heart of gold whose eternal goal is rooted deeply within the philosophical veins of "Love & Peace!"...and somewhere in there he's caught out chasing some or other elusive mayfly. All power to him, naturally.

But be not fooled by this fellow cultists, for amid the vastness of the dusty desert plains sprawling majestically out into even more dusty desert plains, our light-hearted hero with his classic character building hairdo and funky 'W' arm sunglasses carries with him a weight so deeply set upon the pedestal of his heart, that one can look upon his bearing with respect. For this weight held so tightly amidst the bonds of fragile ideal set forth the foundations of one of anime's most respected and idolized visionary characters.

In The Beginning...
There is a manga author (or mangaka, if you will) whose name is Yasuhiro Nightow. Born on the 8th of April 1967 this genius gentlemen who is a self confessed lover of toy collecting and hater of avocados had a very clear vision of the kind of hero the world needed today. Even if today was some time in the distant future and the hero appeared a souped up version of Charlie Chaplin for the 20th Century.
Regardless, all good things come in awkward, spontaneously self-combusting packaging.

First serialised in a Japanese manga magazine named Shonen Captain from February 1995 through to 1997 - the 'Trigun' manga series had a bit of a troubled history lifting off the ground. 'Trigun' originally spanned 3 volumes worth of material until early in 1997 when further releasees of Shonen Captain magazine were cancelled leaving Nightow in a bit of a conundrum. Passionate and attached to his work, Nightow expressed regret in the cancellation of Shonen Captain but remained resolute when approached by other popular Japanese manga magazine Young King Ours in 1998 in an effort to recruit his marvellous skill. Accepting the offer YKO editors were sympathetic in hearing that Nightow felt uncomfortable leaving 'Trigun' unfinished as a whole. And thus were happy to accommodate the author whose continuation of Vash's adventures in 'Trigun Maximum's' production from 1998 right up until now in 2007 has been widely met with uproariously enthusiastic applause on a multi-national scale.

In October 2003 American publishers, Dark Horse Comics won rights to have the first 3 original 'Trigun' manga novels compressed into 2 enlarged novels, translated into English and preserved in their original Left-to-Right reading format to massive success. The two volume series was concluded in 2004 and went on to be noted as the best selling graphic novel series for that year!
Twelve volumes of the original 'Trigun' continuation, 'Trigun Maximum' were also collected into the careful hands of Dark Horse publishers where 102 chapters of bullet-spitting, somewhat-more-somber, Vashness has delighted audiences with translations available in Spanish, Italian, German, French and Portuguese.

Consider the history lesson in pioneering manga concluded here.
Onwards to the halls of anime where Vash the Stampede was born onto the silver screen of glory and his messages of Love and Peace with their Buddhist principle undertones were professed to millions of viewers world wide.

On the 1st of April 1998 'Trigun' the fully animated series was finally produced by Madhouse Studios. Directed by Satoshi Nishimura with the script adaptation written by Yousuke Kuroda, the stage was set for a truly flawless collaboration of talent, wit and ingenuity. 'Trigun' the series ran for 26 episodes with each presented 30 minutes in length.
Production was a fairly hard and fast affair for the entire series was completed on the 30th of September 1998. Nightow himself expressed that there simply would not be another series made after the conclusion of the first. This was due to the manner in which the series ended marking its potent finality.

Nevertheless, anime giants Geneon Entertainment with the help of ADR producers Animaze and ZRO Limit Productions picked up English licensing.
An extraordinary vocal cast was collected for the English adaptation of the series with truly vibrant performances by Dorothy Melendrez, as Meryl Stryfe and Lia Sargent as Milly Thompson. Both these women played their roles with a cultivated vivacity well worth mention. The exceptional talent of Jeff Nimoy performed the emotive and powerful Nicholas D. Wolfwood effortlessly.
And last but not least, our hero Vash the Stampede was brought to life with an unforgettable performance by Johnny Yong Bosch whose vocal range and verbally illustrative capacity amply captivated audiences; whether in the midst of a hilarious run-as-fast-as-you-can scene or indeed when Vash required all the commanding presence the camera could possibly offer.

Musically speaking, the opening theme tune entitled 'H.T.' performed by Tsuneo Imahori shines rather specifically with regards to its musical relevance to the 'Trigun' series as a whole. Its gutsy guitar-driven leads and energetic melody set the atmosphere on high for exciting adventure. The musical relevance trend is continued in the closing theme entitled 'Kaze wa Mirai ni Fuku' (The Wind Blows to the Future) performed by AKIMA & NEOS. A remarkable feat in its self with respectful consideration to many of the soundtracks produced for modern anime even up to today. AKIMA & NEOS however made certain that the unmistakeable Western theme left audiences on a fulfilled high at the conclusion of every episode.

Since the 80s the technical capacity of animation certainly reached a long way, however absolutely full range motion animation even in today's modern features is not always a possible option. 'Trigun' as a series constructed in such a brief period of time certainly does credit to Madhouse Studios for their efficiently and skill.

'Trigun' proved to be one of the few series' produced at the time that refused choppy, stop-motion animating and instead followed through with superb full range movement dynamics giving every character a genuine true-to-life realism.

With fans in the millions world wide it is assured that Vash the Stampede is more than just an elusive fugitive on the run from determined bounty hunters, but rather a well set up hero whose philosophic principles are bound to touch the hearts of audiences young and old.
He might even catch that mayfly one day.

Cult Classic: By Request

Time To Save The Universe // Sailor Moon

RATING ADVICE: The following anime title has been rated PG. All episodes within this series are recommended for viewing with parental guidance. This series contains mild level animated violence and mild themes.

"Usagi Tsukino, clumsy 2nd-year middle school student, stumbles upon a talking cat named Luna. Luna tells her that she is destined to be Sailor Moon, "champion of love and justice", and she must search for the fabled Moon Princess. Usagi finds friends that turn out to be destined Sailors as well, and together they fight to save the world from the certain doom brought upon by the Dark Kingdom."

And thus began one of the most internationally powerful iconic anime series of the 20th Century.
A true milestone in classic Japanese animation, 'Sailor Moon' is among one of the most respected and widely acclaimed series to date. Literally a multi-billion dollar empire in merchandising alone, the 'Sailor Moon' epic merely presented its self as a simple story of a young school girl that spun off into earth saving proportions, whose comedic smatterings and Shoujo romantic inclinations may well have become a favourite among girls and young women but is faultlessly recognized by the masses worldwide.

True to Japanese cross-media productions the first ever appearances of 'Sailor Moon' were originally authored and drawn by Naoko Takeuchi where they came to pass as a serialization for the Japanese manga magazine Nakayoshi in February 1992.
Manga novel releases for the original 'Sailor Moon' series spanned 18 volumes to massive success with the series concluding indefinitely in April 1997.
The mind boggling success of the series saw it picked up barely a month following its first volume serialization in March 1992 by series director Junichi Sato whom worked together with a team of script writers, (Katsuyuki Sumisawa, Megumi Sugihara, Shigeru Yanagawa and Sukehiro Tomita) to produce 'Sailor Moon', the original fully animated series.

A massive task within its self, the first original 'Sailor Moon' series spanned 46 episodes at 30 minutes each and hosted an extremely vast array of Japanese vocal talent with the lead role of Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon being portrayed to legendary status by Kotono Mitsuishi. Unfortunately, toward the end of the first series, Mitsuishi fell ill and role of Usagi was picked up temporarily by fellow actress Kae Araki.

Animation and production was handled by the massively successful Toei Animation, the same production company responsible for the release of the 'Digimon' and 'Dragon Ball Z' series as well as 'Cutey Honey' adaptations amid vastly numerous other super titles.
When the time came for English licensing, ADV Films and DiC Entertainment went head to head in a bidding war. In the end ADV Films won

out on a limited release license until the contract was finally handed over to DiC Entertainment.

English translation dubbing for 'Sailor Moon' became a somewhat argument-prone epic once DiC Entertainment in tandem with Optimum Productions gained production rights. Regardless, mass popularity saw to it that 'Sailor Moon' was cast in French, German, Swedish, Portuguese, Tagalog, Spanish and Italian amidst various other European production and distribution markets.

'Sailor Moon's' animation as a whole was kept consistent in its fairly full-motion dynamics which made it pleasant to observe via way of motion mechanics. Colour pallets were kept bright and attractive in keeping with the up-beat tempo of the series as a whole.

To date 'Sailor Moon' finds its self still extremely popular at an international level with a host of OVA films, live action series', musicals and video game adaptations which make the 'Sailor Moon' multi-verse far too vast to chronicle in single article. However, 'Sailor Moon' is arguably one of the greatest iconic anime classics of our time.

The Sailor Moon Filmography Ticks Off Like So:

Sailor Moon (Running 46 Episodes)
Sailor Moon R (Running 43 Episodes)
Sailor Moon S (Running 38 Episodes)
Sailor Moon Super S (Running 39 Episodes)
Sailor Moon Sailor Stars (Running 34 Episodes. Thus concluding the series in August 1997)

E/ FEATURED GROUP
http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/5830/mtmgroupez3.jpg

vectory is one of the largest art groups on MT and is still growing. It was originally a group that focuses on vector arts only, and at that time, few members exist. Now, Vectory has achieved a great number of members, both beginners and professional in the world of vectoring. Even vectored wallpaper, painting-trace and other tracing techniques are now widely accepted in the group.

The group has held two very successful contests in the past, both contests generated lots of great entries, a few of which were even highlighted.

Currently, the group is hosting a project called Vexel Revolution, that encourages beginning and experienced vector artists to try something new. (More information about the project can be found in section G: Competitions and Projects)

F/ GET TO KNOW YOUR MT STAFF!

This month we get to know one of our dear Scan Mods, Marissa!

fireflywishes (F): As one of the Scan Mods, what makes a good scan?
Marissa (M): Well, high resolution, minimal printing grain, and of course, a well-composed picture--like a clear subject, and a well-defined, and preferably unobtrusive, background

F: What advice do you have for new members who are thinking about submitting scans?
M: Read the rules. ALL of them. If you're not going to read the rules, make your own scans from new material...ANIME material. I actually deleted a scan of a Newsweek article a really long time ago.

F: Looking at your gallery, it seems like you're a huge CLAMP fan. Are there any other artists whose artwork you just can't get enough of?
M: Narumi Kakinouchi, Aoi Nanase, and Chiho Saito. And in the non-anime realm, Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres

F: What makes their artwork so appealing?
M: I actually really like art that looks a little less polished, sort of sketchy and unrefined, but that's brought together with color. Tsubaki Nekoi of CLAMP draws in that style, but she doesn't illustrate as many projects as their lead artist, which is too bad.

F:: I love your collection of awesome guestbook posts... Not something you see everyday. What made you decide to post them up?
M: ...cuz they were awesome?
F: Lol, okay... well, what qualifies a guestbook post as a potential addition to the collection?
M: Well of course it has to be so stupid that it's awesome, which generally means the person has to at least sound like they really think they're making a good argument.

F: Okay, you knew it was coming--random rapidfire question time!
M: ...woohoo...!

F: What is your anime guilty pleasure?
M: I just started watching Kodomo no Jikan, which is really quite taboo funny. It's about a 4th grader who tries to seduce her male teacher.

F: If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
M: Do I get a drink with that too?
F: Hrm... water. X-P
M: In-n-Out burgers

F: Who is your favorite anime couple?
M: Karen and Aoki from X

F: What kinds of things do you like to do in your spare time?
M: Sleep, watch movies, sleep, listen to music, sleep, drive, sleep, read, sleep. :D

F: What's the last good film that you saw?
M: Eastern Promises. It had Russian guys, nurses, violence, and you got to see Viggo Mortensen naked.

F: Finally, do you have any last words before we end the interview?
M: People who think Gerard Butler is a good singer are stupid and/or deaf.

That concludes this month's "Get to Know Your MT Staff!" Thanks to Kitten for requesting Marissa for this month's interview! Remember, if you have a Mod that you'd like to know more about, or would like to submit a question you'd like me to ask a Mod, send it to me via PM. This is fireflywishes, signing out!

Quote: No, you're not going to give up so easily! The path to being popular isn't easy, but giving up won't solve anything! You're gonna try again, and this time, it's gonna stay in the gallery!

I wish she will give up soon... XD

Quote by MarissaWell of course it has to be so stupid that it's awesome, which generally means the person has to at least sound like they really think they're making a good argument.

Best part of the interview. Lol. :D

Anyway, good job overall. And congrats to Alterlier and Vectory! ;)

Yeheee...I was looking forward to this month's issue, and wondering when it was going to be published. It's great as ever! :D Just like what alterlier said, my favorite part is also the Popular-chan! (It has always been) The title is really funny thought! :D Hahahaha...

Eagerly looking forward to the next next issues...

Also, my other favorite part are the Featured Artist & Group. It's so wonderful to know great artists this way since I barely have time to roam around and view highlighted and great works in the galleries. :)

The area I frequent most is probably the Forum. I don't actually participate much in discussions. I just enjoy reading people's comments. Heheh.

Awww, Bot-chii, don't feel neglected. We love you! XD

The Adventures of Popular-chan is my favourite section too! What, oh what Popular'll do next...?

It looks like Popular-chan lived up to her name; she may not be popular on MT in her world but she sure is here! Great job Maple-san :D

I'm ready now...

Ahah, is there actually someone called Popular-chan ? Or is it just a general sentence ?

Anyway, nice mod interview, and I can't wait for the CC anime contest ;)

w00t! my first vote here!

I went with the obvious 'art' response. However an 'all of the above' option would have been the winner for me.
