I'd like to get a broader view of how well the multimedia industry around the world particularly Australia) is going. Multimedia has increased due to the digital/technological age we are in, yet I still hear that its still very hard to get a job based on such industry. Comments based on your country's industry would also be appreciated.

well its not so hard to get a job as to "qualify" for a job i think. I'm in school for multimedia right now, and alot of my teachers tell us to focus more on creating things that could make a good piece for a portfolio, rather than focusing on getting the a perfect score on the assignment. Most of my teachers at this school have or are currently still working in the industry.
I live in the US and right now the industry is booming, its expected to be one of the greatest areas of growth job wise in the next few years in the NW.From what I understand its not very hard to get a job based in the industry, as more of difficult to keep up with the pace of the industry and keep a competitive edge. And so prospective employers look for those who have a good workflow that would work best in that way. Alot of graphic designers (along with other similiar fields) here work freelance too.
A moment bound in eternity.

Thanks for that. I can imagine the industry in the US, but its mainly Australia I'd like to go on about. Apparently, its not so big (including the IT industry as a whole) here in NSW but better in other states of Australia, but in Melbourne Victoria, the art industry for australia is great.

My observations, limited though they may be, are that multimedia in Australia is often tied to another organisation's operations rather than being an industry in its own right. For example, I've sometimes seen job ads for Madman Entertainment looking for people to prepare content for their website. Another example is the where I work in local government. A large Council or State Government agency often has a need for specialists in multimedia content to prepare works for their website.
Things may depend on which parts of the multimedia industry you're particularly interested in (or have relevant skills) - as it now has a very broad range of jobs - from graphic designers to content production to video production - you name it...

Ah, thanks a lot. Yeh, it makes sense that they need those in order to promote their own business. Though my idea of it is, while there are in demand, its limited and hence competition is high, no matter how broad it is. Still, multimedia is growing according to statistics, but as expected, slightly.

graphic designers have done pretty much everything you see (most logo's, advertisements, printed material in general, websites, etc.) are designed by a professional now. However there are still those who like, or in some cases, can't afford to hire a graphic artist and do things themselves. But in general alot of companies (here in the US at least) either hire out to design firms or hire their own designers to work within the company.
Just saying "multimedia" is pretty broad though as it covers everything from movies, tv shows, video games, print based media (such as magazines and pamphlets, etc.), and alot more....
