i've played (but not completed some of it) ff3, ff4 (both nintendo DS versions), ff5, ff6, ff7 and ff8 (and Crisis Core
and Dissidia, but those don't count). I like ff7 probably because it's the first final fantasy game i ever played.
though story-line wise it's a bit more complicated compared to the other stories (especially due to its many prequels,
sequels and side stories). ff6 and 7 seems to be almost on par with each other (due to the many similarities in the
story) ff7 is preferred probably because it has a bit more modern setting.
there are different aspects to look into a game. storyline, characters, character development, environment, music,
graphics and gameplay.
storyline wise, ff6/ff7 are pretty much good. ff8 had a storyline which was a tad silly. (i don't really know much about
the rest, but ff x-2 was silly to me as well)
characters in ff8 were better compared to ff7 (because cloud, tifa, yuffie, barret, sephiroth and cait sith are abit
overdone. whereas ff8 provided characters like rinoa, laguna, edea, irvine and ultimecia which seem more human
[ultimecia because she wants time compression so that no one will ever have to die]) I can't really feel for characters
in ff6 except for celes.
character development in most ffs are a bit lacking. ff8 had the best character development, especially rinoa and
squall.
environment in ff8 takes the cake. ff7 is a bit too bland. and the other ffs are because of 2D-ness. (If you want
breath-taking environments, VP2 is the best amongst squeenix's works)
as for music, nobuo does a pretty good job for Aria de Mezzo Carratere (and the new version, Opera of Maria and Draco)
and others. (by the by, crisis core music sucks except for a few pieces)
graphic wise will of course be the ffs to come, ff13 and whatnot.
gameplay in most final fantasy games that i've played are pretty much the same. I like ff8 because of magic draws and gf
abilities which lets me combine and upgrade magic rather than buy/obtain materia then levelling it. (MP is a pain
sometimes) Upgrading weapons through item collection makes it pretty fun (and horridly torrid sometimes) hunting for
stuff. Also, because of the card games. (yes. i am biased due to minigames. I especially like the snowboarding game in
ff7). Crisis Core had a different gameplay, but missions are utterly awful, character development is awful, storyline
seems stuffed in for more content. (the only reason to play it is because of Zack.)
all in all. each ff games have their strengths and weaknesses. let's just hope that squeenix gives us a good one this
time. my opinions are only based on what i've experienced. i havent completed a lot of games. just so you know. XD
