Square-Enix has reportedly hit an all time low, probably because of the economic crisis and the price-tag of the consoles and the games. One thing's for sure though, piracy played a big part in this.
This might also explain the reason why Square opts to remake games instead of creating new and innovative ones. I don't know if it's just me but after ps1 the interval of square's game had increased.

I don't play many of square enix games but from the ones I played in the past they were pretty good, if they are going to recreate them I hope things are better than what some of them were, I can remember some pretty bad glitches and stuff in the game

I think the only game I played of Square Enix was FF XII, but I've heard of some good ones in the past and I'm glad SE is going to recreate them. But this econimic crisis sure is affecting the whole world

Probably, the problem is even the ps3's bluray discs can now be pirated which means cheaper games for the ps3. FF fan or not, cheaper games may mean things may still go for the worst for any company out there.

First I have to agree that on ps1 I know only awesome games from square like Xenogears or Final Fantasy series but on ps2 their games were still awesome but now their games are not so good as they were. FFXII hits much lower than FFX which was just masterpiece. Now they give out few worser games because they just want to get cash so they can go with the big and great ones. That's my opinion.
I don't think they'll lack of ideas, all of their product was just simple called "art"

i wouldnt say that piracy is a big factor, while yes games on the new consoles are rippable, the piracy is no where near as bad as the pc game market. just over the past few years square has made A LOT of bad buisness decisions that hurt them immensely. They are finally starting to get their crap together and following suit to other developers like namco, tri-ace, and others and supporting multi-platform releases (PC,XBX, PS3). This will increase their profit margins greatly.
i honestly feel the whole exclusive crap for platforms has got to stop. i could care less if a game was exclusive to one platform or another. Sony was banking on MGS4 boosting the PS3 to number 1 status, well look how well that backfired on them. Kojima actually wanted a multi-platform release for MGS4 to increase profits, but he couldnt due to the contract agreement with Sony. In turn, his next metal gear project is gonna be multi-platform (PC, XBX and PS3). how bout that...
If Square Enix wants to make money fast, they out to just remake Final Fantasy VII for the PS3, complete with the best graphics, etc. It would sell like hotcakes.
Sqaure is losing money because of bad business decisions and not so good games, though. Final Fantasy X-2 and XII were flops (and deservedly so), Kingdom Hearts after the first one has gone steadily downhill, they keep wasting money on every tiny side story they can squeeze out of FFVII (which is bad because how many of the new games nowadays even know about or have played FFVII? - probably not many) and on re-releasing the same old games over and over with little new content. Just looking at FFXIII, I don't really see it being all that good of a game either. It looks liek the same old boring futuristic storylien with the same old character archetypes. They had to create a "female Cloud", as one SE person called Lightning, just to attract people back to the games.
FF has pretty much gone stale, sadly. Which is why SE keeps losing money.
Let's not forget that the video game industry in general is suffering because of economic troubles. Square Enix shouldn't be pegged as the only company with lagging sales. And if Square Enix is going to release more games to stay afloat, I have no complaints against that. :] Frankly, I thought it was sad when releases came so far apart.
And I wouldn't call FF XII a flop when it sold 5 million copies worldwide and was ranked as the tenth best selling PS2 game.
It only have to sell DS games... oh wait doesn't the last DQ on DS ?
Maybe try to fix what they can already have instead of shooting at themselves : I like the good vibes coming from FFXI : seems like it's trendy to bassh Square-Enix about it (massive automatic bans, the means of payment will be restricted : I suppose it's their way to lose customers because the customers don't want to go away).
