Why do so many males use female anime characters for their avatars?

I mean, on many social networking sites like Myspace and Facebook, it's so easy to tell somebody's sex based on their own picture, and most of the time if they use an alter ego, it's usually the same gender as they are. But this trend is quite different on anime forums, and I've been so surprised to find out that a person I've been chatting with happens to be a guy! (Obviously since he's been using a girl character for an avy.)

It's not obvious? I'm female and I sometimes use male avatars simply because I like having a hot guy for an avatar. I think it's the same for guys, but the other way around.

I agree with Bernouli. She took the words right out of my mouth. XD Haha! I think a lot of guys just prefer looking at girl pics.
It's like that with me too. I'm a girl, but the majority of all my pics are just guys. XD

*giggles* just because they state they are male/female that does not mean/make them male/female trust me I've been on social networks since 97 people lie, it's easy to lie, fake, etc...I use both male and female on myspace myself...here I use mostly animal related like the one I use now...it's just harder to find for this site thus the reason why I slack in changing them so much :P

My sister likes to share accounts with me so...I tend to have female avatars :P Fortunately,newer online games have multiple characters per account...so thank god for that XD

well how about the girls that have boys as their dp :P same principle i'm living proof of that...x person is correct use the avatar that you like, that fits you, etc who cares who ridicules you about it, as long as it's going with the rules then it's all good...

Its not such a big deal so what if it is girly, if that guy(like me) thinks its cool, then he(I) can use it as much as I want

I would use a girl avy for the fact that not only would it be nice to look and a cute anime avy every time I'm on a site, but it could also potentally show others your favorite Anime Girl.

the think is female in vigorous figure is rare different with male lot of them so I using avatar only use vigorous female
