I think the Add Friend box in the Manage Contacts page is not working yet. So the other way to do this is by going to your friend's userpage, and click on "Add to friendlist" on the left panel Options. Cancel

you could try visiting the person and then adding them that way, that's what I've always done...but sometimes that section has situations and stuff when you go to add someone straight up Cancel
