Rei Ayanami, Asuka Langley Soryu, Sakura Kinomoto, Syaoran, Miku Hatsune, and Black Rock Shooter are one of the most popular anime characters I've ever come across.They're everywhere, esp. on the Internet.
What do you think? Have any others?

in general, possibly haji from blood+, amon and robin from witch hunter robin, kiba and tsume from wolf's rain, saya from blood the last vampire, d from vampire hunter d, alucard from hellsing and the list goes on...i suppose they interest me based on their personalities...if you meant from what was mentioned it's from vocaloid and some of the popular singers in japan...i don't know where some of those other characters come from in general...

Im not into anime now but I always see Naruto, Cardcaptor Sakura and Shakugan no Shana. I guess people here are into animes that they always see. I forgot, there is always Death Note on our anime stands. Popular animes rule.

I see a lot of Haruhi Suzumiya, too much of the Lucky Star girls, Saber from fate//Stay Night, and the girls from Magical Lyrical Nanoha. There's also a lot of the Evangelion girls.

Hatsune Miku isn't really an anime character and Black Rock shooter is probably lesser known.
If you aren't really much into Vocaloids, it is easy to not know about Miku (well I have known about her only a year ago) while you can't say the same thing about the characters of One Piece, or Suzumiya Haruhi by exemple.

Pikachu seems a clear winner, when there are questions about Pokémon in the local version of "Who wants to be a millionair ?", you know than normal people completely uninterested by anime know Pikachu. Though it's true Pikachu is helped a lot by the games.

I'd say the most popular is probably Naruto or Lelouch, but Rei Ayanami and Suzumiya Haruhi are quite popular aswell... Though i don't really mind, i'm a Rei fan myself :P.

Is Asuka really that popular? I haven't seen all that much of her in the internet as avatars or in signatures or anything :S
