they have thousands of references to the japanese/anime/otaku world

from recent i would recomend eden of the east
D.Gray-man is a MUST. But Seirei no Moribito is my offer. Really good anime that has a great storyline and likeable characters. I got hooked in on the first episode xD
And if you want a series that you can watch at any speed, I recommend all three seasons of Jigoku Shoujo. It's like a series of very interesting one-shots. The main characters are also drawn very artistically.
and my last recommendation would probably be Ghost Hunt. A very entertaining, underrated anime with humor and horror in it >;3
