Beat. For example, most metal songs have great and meaningful lyrics, but they give me a terrible headache

I listen to both, but I'm more of a beat person than lyrics. I'll forgive a song kind of tacky (usually "love" oriented) lyrics if it has a terrific beat.

I must say both. But I add another factor in the mix. I have to like their voice. If I don't like their voice it doesn't matter WHAT their lyrics are. But they need to have good lyrics that don't curse every other word or just talk about sex all the time. And they need to have nice music along with it. If the guitars, drums, or whatever instruments suck, it's quite distracting. I also am rather fond of SINGING. While I like certain screamo, they need to sing too, and I need to like their singing AND screaming voice.... I am quite particular...
