The Shinsengumi were more then just a thing from Haokoi & Kenshin. They were a police force have played a pivotal role in Japan's history know memebers haave been in animes. But the anime failed to discuss many thing as the codes of Shinsengumi,Saito Hajim said when he fought Kenshin" Shinsengumi shun the way of the samurai"> Incorrect the first article of the Shinsengumi code was never to strive from the path of Bushido. Now let's hear other's oponions.

we're all part of the universe. If we understand this, feel it burn within us,life can shine. Anyone's"

A samurai who strays away from the path of Bushido/Shinsengumi is not a true samurai at all.

I am a brony and proud of it!

Like An Endless Waltz

One of the best portrayals of the lives of the Shinsengumi I ever saw was the NHK Taiga Drama series for the Shinsengumi that came out in 2004, it showed many key events of the lives of the group, such as the days of their lives in their dojo in Edo before their journey to Kyoto, the main group's conflict with Kamo Serizawa and his group, the struggle that men like Isami Kondo and Toshizo Hijikata went through to be respected by the "blue-blooded" samurai that looked down upon them because of being born farmers, and the tragedies that followed after the union of the Choshu & Satsuma clans. I remember that the series did go into the Code of the Shinsengumi.

Deviating from the samurai code (Bushido)
Leaving the Shinsengumi
Raising money privately
Taking part in others' litigation
Engaging in private fights

These were rules the Shinsengumi lived by

The price for breaking the was this

The penalty for breaking any rule was seppuku. In addition, the Shinsengumi had these regulations:
If the leader of a unit is mortally wounded in a fight, all the members of the unit must fight and die on the spot.
Even in a fight where the death toll is high, it is not allowed to retrieve the bodies of the dead, except the corpse of the leader of the unit.
The most prominent of which is this: "If a Shinsengumi member engages in a fight with a stranger, be it on duty or not, if he is wounded and can't kill the enemy, allowing him to run away, even in case of a wound in the back, seppuku is ordered

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinsengumi sadly they appeared after the samurai to take the place of the samurai aka many samurai either became shinsengumi or they became ronin and things travel from there. when they appeared there were the radical change, it's amazing how, when a culture reaches the height, that when they do die they either have to merge or cause a mighty war yet still fail. but, let's hope, they never bother to forget the past, the moment that anyone forgets their past, regardless of the past, they will face the moment of repeating it :(

ronin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronin are those that lost their samurai rank due to their master losing their life, etc. got to remember, for a time, people were not able to kill themselves at the death of their master/lord for some time there and a lot of ronin were "formed" they did not lose their honor at all times, like I pointed out, there are many contributing factors which can lead one to become a ronin, not often one who has lost their path of bushido. the path is always there, but not following the rules/laws are quite a horrible fate for people of that time.

HaouJudai6 you're being harsh, ronin might lost their master but it doesn't mean that they lost their honor and pride as a samurai. A state of mind can't be change as easy as flipping hands.

I do not fear death, but I do fear of losing sight on what I believe in.

Again now they never have its always been a faction of true samurai who embraced bushido. If they lost they're honor they knew the price they had to pay. Seppku not going on to live as a Ronin.

A Genius No Rule Can Contain!

Lol to believe the catalyst for the entire post was the visit of Admiral Perry forcing Japan to open their coutry to trade, thus started the Meji Revolution.

Oh oh....you surely is a hardheaded one....
Well....for me....as long as that someone still have the will to fight that means they haven't lost their honor. It is true that some of them has completely lost it and wandering around like a stray dogs. But I believe that there are those who held the spirit of real samurai no matter how thin the number is.

Seppuku http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seppuku was normally performed later on in japanese history as a more humane way and even that was outlawed in the tokugawa period so that is when the ronin became rapid, they didn't lose their honor they could not carry out final acts like times of old. before seppuku it was single suicide called Hari cari
