I'm one of those people who that struggle to remember EVERY ONE's name, so I use nicknames to remember them by. Either their own or I make one up my own (those i usually keep to myself till their name sticks :P )

My mother gave me my 1st nickname: Vlooi (it means flea in my home language - Afrikaans) because I'm so small and fast.
I then later changed it to "Flooi" to be different and later made one in Japanese: Nomi (which also means flea)
My cousin then gave my my favorite nickname: Miss MeatPudding after reading my social chat status msg.
My very good friend calls me: Chibi-chan / nee-san

Nicknames are definitely FUN^^
Well, in my real life I actually have not so much of them. My mum calls me Ina or Inusya^^ (my real name is Inessa- sometimes it's too long and official^^), for friends it's Ina.
As for the web:
Lilium, paniinna, Nessbad(94) - my fav^^, Nessy-sama.

IMO I really like the nicknames, I had some nicknames a few very strange, but after all I love them.

Interesting! I think calling people by nicknames is sweet thing kinda funny sometimes. I always like to call my friends and family by their nicknames. I have got many nicknames in real. As for my internet nicknames they are:
Barcalover, Barsa, Dreamer, MissRandom, Randomiss, Miss88, my cousin call me Barasaty <- totally random one but I loved it ^^
Maybe I got other nicknames but I cant remember them right now.
