Darthas pretty much jotted it all down but I'd also like to add lots of patience and practice. As for programs, I guess Photoshop would be the best option for starting but I'd also suggest looking at some tutorials and advices here or online until you get the hang of it. gimp is free btw so if you don't want to spend money on photoshop or don't want to pirate it then gimp is a good alternative. Gimp is cross platform too so it will work on basically any computer.
