Hi, people!
i was just wondering what series have become classics within the anime world or the ones people must not miss.
my personal list is as follow ( i don't consider myself an expect, yet these are the animes i believe are worth seeing))
let me know your opinion. n.n
1. Naruto
2. Bleach
3. DBZ
4. Pokemon
5. Death Note
6. Seint Seiya
7. Card Captor Sakura
8. Kimi ni Todoke
9. Vampire Knight
10. Fruits Basket

Lol, your thread title and your actual question don't completely correspond..

But, for classics, the only ones I've watched and really followed are:
- Rurouni Kenshin
- Yu Yu Hakusho
- Ranma 1/2
- Card Captor Sakura (classic?)

I too am inexperienced xD. I really should watch series like Sailormoon and Utena. Not to mention Cowboy Bebop. And Gintama. And Bakemonogatari. Oh and Sayonara Zetusbou Sensei. *curls up in despair* (and that is my actual 'To-watchlist')

Less classic, but still great examples of anime:
- Mushishi
- Kino no Tabi
- Kamichu
- Mononoke

And out of personal opinion, anime surprises:
- Mawaru Penguindrum
- Tiger and Bunny

I wouldn't put the Vampire Knight anime anywhere near my list at all lol. Even Black Cat was less than a trainwreck. (Trainwreck. Get it? Ge- //shot)

Current fandoms: 999 (aka Nine Hours, Nine People, Nine Doors) // Dangan Ronpa // Persona 4 // Gakuen Kino --- From my cold! Dead! Hands!

For must-seen anime, I would suggest these titles :
- Code Geass
- Suzumiya Haruhi
- Evangelion
- Last exile
- Gankutsuo
- at least a Gundam, either the original or a more recent if you can't bear old ones like Wing or Seed
- Death Note
- Fruits Basket
- The 12 Kingdoms (you have to bear to watch up to ep 2 since the first one is bad, but it becomes great after)
- Fate Stay Night
- Clannad
- Eden of the east
- Fullmetal ALchemist (first one)

Some more recent ones but I bet they will stay :
- Shiki (Corpse Demon)
- Mawaru Penguin

PS : Except Furuba, FMA and Death Note, I didn't give anime adaptations of manga since I am more convinced that original manga are better (except few titles like FMA (I find the manga boring while I love the first adaptation), Sailor Moon or even Saint Seya... Saint Seya is the only anime which filler ark - the Asgard ark - is better than the original parts IMO) especially if they are really long shonen manga.

Spirited away(all Miyazaki's anime films)
Makoto Shinkai's 5 cm/per second, Voices of a distant star The place promised in our early days
Lucky star /hilarious otaku comedy/
Kara no kyokai /definitely the best anime thriller and drama/
Hellsing/I mean TV series, but ova also are not bad/
Perfect blue /anime movie thriller/

I would propose:
-Durarara and -Baccano! - same studio and author, these shows are really something else!
-Bakemonogatari- another unusual and awesome
-Angel Beats!- typical but unusual at the same time, has everything that an anime should have I think
- Code Geass - one of the best there is I think
- Death Note- absolute must watch
- D Gray-man- one of my personal favs
- Katekyo Hitman Reborn!- really likeable
- Neon Genesis Evangelion- don't know why
- Rurouni Kenshin- true classic
- Wolf's Rain- beautiful and deep
- Bakuman- just finished first season but I think it should be here already
- Naruto- can't help it..

From personal likings I'd add Tegami Bachi, House of five leaves and Kuroshitsuji, maybe Fate/Stay Night or rather Fate/Zero recently..
Thats from I've seen and my "plan to watch" list is getting longer and longer.. I shall add some of your types to it too^_^

To elaborate on my small list....

School Rumble -
It's very a funny show and full of drama about several teens (and their love triangles) in High School. I recommend it because the humor is very universal and the story remains pretty light hearted throughout the series, but without being just random fluff. There is definitely a worthwhile story being told in just about every episode. Also there's lots of scenes where characters are chibi-fied for a moment. Chibi's are awesome. lol.


Dragonball Z Kai
I am really referring to the English dub version of it, which is the one I've been watching. Opinions may vary, but mine is that the voice actors do outstanding work, the new music works very well, having the fillers cut out and the story as a whole streamlined makes the whole experience better, and the dialogue has been rewritten and is well crafted to really fit each character.

I have to agree with Haruhi. It wasn't the first anime of its kind but it was popular enough to be a turning pint in anime, totally not referencing a recent sankakucomplex article. >.> <.<

And K-on. You can't live without seeing the first season of K-on.

And Clannad, well not necessarily Clannad, just any Key anime really. Because Key.

Elfen Lied was epic but if I'm recommending for someone else then I think Higurashi is as bloody as I'd dare to go. Plus it's fun watching people's reactions to the first season. The sooner you stop trying to figure out what the hell is going on, the more you'll enjoy it.

Speaking of watching people's reactions, School Days always fun to see how people react to the last episode. I;m not sure if I'd label that as essential anime though.

I used to like Death Note but some friends kind of talked me out of liking it, oh peer pressure... =3

K that's moeness, ecpically sad love stories, and yandere/psychological thriller stuff....

I suppose some shonen fantasy crap stuff is missing.

Everyone should watch at least maybe 50 episodes of Bleach or so -that's essential.

Here's my list:

1. Detective Conan (I grew up watching this. and I'm still watching this :D)

2. Code Geass (epic is epic)

3. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (don't bother with the first season if you don't have time. it's not bad, really, but once I finished this I realized this one was much better)

4. Elfen Lied (body count up to 19 in the first 5 minutes. not recommended for the weak-stomached. but awesome story and everything adds up in the end.)

5. Hellsing Ultimate (don't bother with the canon. it's actually not canon and it sucks big time. this Ultimate series is based on the original manga.)

6. Death Note (again, epic is epic)

7. Nurarihyon no Mago (not many people know about this series but it's really popular in Japan and it's amazing. plus, Jun Fukuyama plays the main character!)

8. Hetalia: Axis Powers/Hetalia: World Series (learn history while laughing your ass off!)

9. Ouran High School Host Club (for girls. boys will probably find this stupid.)

10. Kaichou wa Maid-Sama! (same as #9)
