The aura looks a bit weird and out of place for the first wallpaper

Gone.

That aura for the Bleach wall really does look odd and out of place there. It also looks low in quality so you might want to remove it and focus on something else. If you wish to keep something around Zangetsu, maybe a more abstract-like approach would be better - you can check out these wallpapers - 1 and 2 to see what I mean - things must not always be scenic. I would also suggest to revise the colored image of Zangetsu because right now I can see some jpeg artifacts (pixelation and blurriness) which takes away from the quality of the image, especially on his shirt - try to vector the outlines and colors, I think that would look better.

As for the Shanks wallpaper, the image of Shanks looks pretty okay but the background is too simple, repetitive and lacks effort - here I think a nice scenic image like the sky and ocean with some islands in the distance would look much better. That skull is also not necessary since it takes the focus away from the main character...

That's what I have so far, I wish you luck with them!

Mae...Sode no Shirayuki by OokamiFreak
Mae...Sode no Shirayuki by OokamiFreak

Brushes are very useful, just don't overdo the wall with them, equal the textures. try to make that brushes and textures can create a scene or an effect that can blend with the character. I can help in your language anytime, just pm me ^_^

Hmmm I agree with everybody about the aura thing. It's a bit distracting.
Maybe this wallie over here could serve as a reference to you if you still want to go with the 'aura at the back' idea

Going for the night scenery as the background, maybe you could use some color (or shades) variation for the night sky :) Of course, you may want to add stars, moon or auroras to add to that 'night' feel :)
Here are some examples for reference:

Using sparkle brushes would be nice. Just remember, don't use too much, ok? hehe DEVIANTART has a lot of great sparkle brushes by the way.
As for the text, some styles would make it better. Oh and the position is important too. I'm not good with having texts on my wallpapers though...BUT here are some references:
