Haruhi's eye looks a little bit weird. I think instead of it bulging more inside, it should just be like the other eye. It is possible to leave her eye like that but it would mean to adjust the other eye. I also think Kyon needs to be wider with his shoulders. He has more the body of a girl because his shoulders are so small. Well, making his head smaller will also do the job giving a better look at it.

As for the background...seeing quite some anime and japanese traditions for firing fireworks. There usually is some festival going on. Depending on where you want them to be, you adjust the background. As it looks like right now, I think some street light would do the job in filling more space and making it more "realistic" in the scene. It can also be behind the festive part (seems wrong to me somehow) or near buildings, the school perhaps? Maybe on top.I do suggest on whatever you will take that you basically just take a look at some particular scene or place and imagine/put down all the elements that normally should be in it. Then adjust it all to the actual scene of your piece.

These beautiful, fragile days are reborn, unfaded

I don't draw them, this time i only repaint some original scans vectoring the lineart (for kyon http://gallery.minitokyo.net/view/368438 and for haruhi http://gallery.minitokyo.net/view/516134). when I drawing the anatomies are more realistic , but being started from official artwork scans I have not changed them.

thank u for the advices, I'll looking for some photos of matsuri festival

But it is not this day!

I like the idea of the fireworks (I love fireworks) but since their in a festival they shouldn't have uniforms? they should have kimonos or such I guess? or wait, they are going to dress up there? o.o' lol jk, but getting to the wall again, according to the clothes they should be in school, or near :P or maybe a park?

Calgon, take me away~!

I agree with xangel0... I love festival scenes, but their outfits would fit better in a daytime scene-- in a school, a park, or just on the streets around town (shopping district?)

what about this?
Nishinomiya town in the back and in the middle Nishinomiya Kita Highschool (the real places of the anime)

I don't find references inside the school :/ and i don't knows parks or other appropriate places where thet could see the fireworks

or I could use random photos like http://japaneseruleof7.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Japanese-Fireworks.jpg

I think the weird thing about this one is they're in school outfits, but at some sort of night-time celebration.

I actually think your skill at painting is very good, why not use use like a stock image, then paint over it to keep the level of style consistent? I do think that if you do want to keep the idea of a festival going, try like one of those like school ones where they have all the little booths, bazaars, and sort of games going. Should also consider that if this is at night, the clothes might be a little darker, there might be other reflective light sources because artificial lights (street lamps etc) will be on and all over the place.

Just some thoughts from me.

Those above are not the finished drawings, only some sketches to not paint at random. Obviously I'll paint everuthing, photos are only for reference

I'll try to think where put other lights and their reflections, thanks for the advice. the festival background is this http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/9342/qjx2.jpg but their clothes are not suitable
And it took me two years to paint their clothes, thinking to change them makes me want to die
