May I also add Luna Sea, Asian Kung-fu Generation and Flow to the list.

Can't suggest much for Chinese music, as most of it is pretty much mainstream stuff and I don't really listen to radio but these are some of the popular guys/girls/bands:

David Tao(Tao Tze)
Jay Chow(Zhou Jie Lun)
Elva(Xiao Ya Xuan)
Jolin(Cai Yi Ling)
S.H.E(girlgroup)
F.I.R.(two guy, one girl band)
Power Station(two guy rock duo)
Mayday(aka Wu Yue Tian, 5-piece band)

This should keep you busy for a while :)

Try music from animes and things. Usually they're really good. I love the .hack music along with BoA's music is pretty good too. You should also try some of the newer Gundam music like from Gundam Seed and Gundam Seed Destiny. They're hits are pretty good. And music fromgames is usually pretty good too. Like from games Chrono Cross, Xenosaga, Disgea HOD, Suikoden 3, etc.. those soundtracks are pretty good. I know it's hard to keep up with everything too.. ^^;; I don't live in Japan or anywhere like that either.. I just get my music from watching the anime's and liking their soundtracks.. the rest of the stuff, like by ayumi hamasaki, I download myself and use animelyrics.com to found out what her songs are called and stuff.. well good luck! XD

thanks to wintersrain for the banner

if you want to learn more about asian music the best thing to do is find sites on the internet and forums about asian music such and just download songs from different artists to try out their music. Then you will find some you like and some you don't.

Malic Mizer (where Gackt really started to be popular) is always good.

As of late anime DVDs tend to be having more extras like music videos of the band preforming the opening of ending themes. Good way to get the eye candy factor in too I think...

As far as finding new stuff a good place to start is an anime you love the music for. More and more it is popular to have some of the bigger names in music do the openings or closings for series. My first intro to Larcu was through GTO's opening.

Only Chinese singer I know is Faye Wong (and even that I might not have spelled it right).

As a child I was told one day you will grow out of cartoons. That might have been true if my cartoons hadn't grown up as well.

anime soundtracks are good way to start. im huge on Yoko Kanno.

check out: Glay, Gackt, and Back Horn. they are all very good.

for a Chinese singer i like Sally Yeh- you may know her as the nightclub singer in "The Killer" with Chow Yun Fat. she's awesome.

Hehe ^_^ thnx for the indirect compliment ^_^
So far everyone seems to be giving really good suggestions ^_^
Glay is suuuuuuper popular as well as Gackt. Then there is Hikaru Utada (she is awesome, she did the opening and ending for Kingdom Hearts) (I think she did the ending as well...hmmn now I have to check) And of course there is Yoko Kanno. She did the stuff for Cowboy Bebop and Wolfs Rain and tons and tons of other stuff of the sort. BOA, The Brilliant Green, Morning Matsume, there are tons!

Whats funny is people are putting J-Rock bands in here as well even though you asked for J-Pop ^_^

For J-Rock I would have to agree Malice Mizer, Dir En Grey, The Pillows, Hyde(Malice Mizer and Dir En Grey are both goth rock just fyi) oh oh oh I strongly recomend X japan!!! The were one of the biggest rock bands ever in Japan (they arent around anymore though) Their music has a very strong 80's Metal feel to it. Do you download torrents? If you do I can give you a great site to get some music ^_^

Talk to you later bud~

I like the theme songs of Hikaru no Go. My sister bought the theme song collection CD at an anime convention. The pop band dream has several songs in the anime. If you're into the pop stuff, I recommend them.
