Just wondering... I mostly buy mine online to save money. I never download since
I consider it a "collection" and would like to have the full
packaging!
If you do get it online, what websites do you use? I usually buy them from deep
discounts dvds or right stuff (when on sale).
i download anime sometimes , mostly new shows out from japan e.g
- Tsukuyomi ~ Moon Phase & tenjou tenge , but i also Buy them at the shops,
but only if i really like them like kenshin!! + chobits
I'm an even split between borrowing from friends (I have friends with HUGE anime
collections) and buying online. I usually find out everything I can about a
series first, though, but if I'm going to buy it I'll get it somewhere like
animeniacs or deepdiscountdvd. I have little eyes around that like to watch what
big sister watches, so I have to be careful.
I try to rent something before I buy it, thats the best way... that and reading
reviews. A lot of times I will find used anime at stores for dirt cheap too. You
just have to hunt around!
Looks like I'm not alone. I like to see if it fits my tastes first: borrow from
a friend, see on TV, etc. Then if I realy like it, I'll try to find it online,
like on [anonymous auction website], for dirt cheap 'cause I'm on a budget.
I go to my local suncoast to buy any anime I get. Certain anime series (adult
type) I get from a local gaming store( sells games like warhammer type table top
rpg's).
I request anime at streamload request sites and download anime from my
streamload account. I love it, I literally have thousands of anime files:) I
rent from www.greencine.com, Its like
netflix but better cause they have tons of anime, the regular stuff, and foreign
films like ju-on: The grudge. I also buy anime at www.discountanimedvd.com but only If
I love the anime:) Since I bought Serial experiment Lain and totally hated it ,
I wont buy a anime until Ive seen a couple of episodes first:)
Of course, BUY only! Always buy only. I download very little, as like Deedles
said, it isn't really something official when your collection is filled with
fansubs and ripped versions of anime. I like to support the anime industry
100%.
Alas, when people say they download mostly just to get a "preview" so
that they won't waste their money, is partially just an excuse to download the
anime in the first place.
People download anime for several reasons:
1. They want to get the fansubs, get first experience straight away, with little
wait, no licensing
2. It's "free", they don't pay anything extra besides their internet
bill.
3. The people who download don't have a credit card or access to online
shopping.
4. (Unlikely but) They don't have a DVD player for their tv.
5. The quality of fansubs and rips are almost par with that of DVD quality,
little difference when encoding with Divx format.
6. They avoid the official DVDs because they avoid the english dubs; quote:
"dubs are evil, they suck". Thus no need to buy, just downlad away!
7. Fansubs rule, they're free, they give the real true content of the
anime.
These are rather low excuses sometimes, and they are partially true on the
majority of anime fans out there. Mostly from what I know, there are literally
millions (if not billions) of anime fans out there who only download because
after acquiring the anime themselves they don't feel the need to buy it because
they simply burn it for a backup.
In very very very few cases do we actually see people buy anime if they do
actually like them. However, this LIKE context, means absolutely adore the
anime. Only if they totally love the anime will they be 100% committed to buying
the official DVDs of them.
For me, there are many anime DVDs that I own which I do not have downloads of.
LOL
Literally 90% of my collection are DVDs. I didn't download Onegai Teacher to get
a preview, I got the DVD because it was my genre, and I fell in love with it
instantly.
For others which I bought but didn't really love to the full were anime like
Steel Angel Kurumi.
Besides, fansubs do not all give the right and actual content of the anime, they
often more than not take shortcuts and try to fit in with the teen society by
using terms like "oo ooh lemme see" or "yea yea, whatever,
yea". And the more frequent use of swear words and insults like:
"crap", "sh*t", "f*ck" and "b*st*rd".
They may think that fansubs give the real stuff for the viewer, but they don't
know that since they have no other source to compare with if they don't the
official anime for themselves.
Gah, so I did!
And whats worse, I posted on it too!!! *hides*
Sumimasen!!! *bows*
I didn't mean to steal, I guess now I know where I got the idea for this thread!
I also had a bit of wine last night, blurred my judgement!
As far as so many people downloading....
If you want to support the anime series and keep anime from whatever studio you
like coming, you should buy. Downloading just for a preview is no big deal, but
if you always download just remember that the only reason you can do this is
because there are fans like us that do buy.
I do both download and anime
tho I download more the I buy
but usually even though if I am in the middle of downloading an anime, then I
saw it on the store, I stopped the download and buy instead. ^_^
I used to download it, but now that I can't actually do that because I'm at
university, my friend brings me some he's downloaded and put onto DVD . I would
honestly start buying more of it, but it costs so much in the UK and even
online, it can cost quite a bit. Will definitely be buying all the Initial D
though ^^ .
If you think about it Aa-chan, if you have a credit card (which I assume you do,
I think) then you could order online. The current £/$ exchange rate
is like 1.9, so we can get them cheaper online than going to shops like HMV,
etc.
Don't buy in retail shops in the UK, they give prices like £17.99
to £24.99 per DVD.
Otherwise if you want the UK online shops which have some anime, then try CDWow or Play.com.
Play.com has some low priced anime whereas the expensive anime are like
£14.99 each.

I download fansubs and I if I like the anime enough I buy the DVDs.
I think that's the safe way to go, As much as I'd like to support the anime industry, I'd like to get a preview of what I'm buying firts.
I've purchased many Animes and my collection is starting to pile up.

Oh, you're in the UK. Same here. But I've found quite a lot of online stores which give low prices. I purchase my anime from DeepDiscountDVD, DiscountAnimeDVD, CDUniverse, Amazon and CDJapan.

I download most of my anime, and if its really good, I buy it. If rent is possible, thats the best choice for me.
