Recently one of the gallery mods went through and closed a bunch of threads in
the Spam Lounge. The language in each was the same (with an occasional
variation):
Quote: Closed due to the amount of
spamming. This thread is a spamhole. Sorry.
As this is Sheqel's house and his rules I'm not going to stomp my feet or
threaten to hold my breath until I turn blue in hopes of having my thread
re-opened. But I would like to take a moment or two of your time to suggest why
those threads are harmless, not spam, and re-opening them would bring back a
degree of spontaneity and fun that makes places like MT such a joy to
participate in.
First, the threads share two common attributes: They have high numbers of
posts, and they usually involve some form of participatory game that all MT
members can contribute to. A third attribute worthy of mention is that they
typically were started by solid, well-liked if not well-respected members on the
boards. These attributes establish, at least circumstantially, that the threads
are enjoyed by a wide variety of people on MT. In fact, it may be difficult to
find other high-post-count threads on *any* topic elsewhere on the boards, from
any member.
The primary goal of the boards is, in fact, to encourage participation in the
community. Scan access and posting rights are controlled by, among other
things, participating on the message boards. I heartily agree with this
principle; it helps put a small but effective brake on leechers and encourages
everyone to give something back to MT in exchange for downloads of high-quality
art. Participating in the threads thus meets the first test, that of fulfilling
one of MT's requirements.
There are further posting requirements found on the policy Web page
(http://support.minitokyo.net/policy/). The relevant points are:
Quote: All posts should be
on-topic and relevant to the specific forum in which they appear, consistent
with the descriptions provided for each on the forum index. Posts in any given
thread should likewise be at least generally relevant to the discussion at hand
-- if you're going off at a tangent, please consider starting a new thread.
Posts or threads which are inappropriate to the theme of a given forum or
discussion thread may be moved to a more suitable one or, in case of a thread,
subject to closing.
In a nutshell, if you wander off the thread topic or out of the forum category,
the thread will most likely be closed. Fair enough; but did these threads
warrant closure?
The threads were posted in the Spam Lounge, which is a catch-all forum. In a
sense, this is the "kicking back and relaxing" forum. Games certainly
come under most people's notions of relaxing and having fun. The game threads
encourage social interaction, participation, and even gamesmanship. They do not
sink to the level of threads that have no purpose, such as "What time is it
where you live?"
As for content, game threads have rules in them, ones that require content that
meets the rules. These are self-policing in that any post that doesn't obey the
rules is ignored or passed over by the other pariticpants. In terms of staying
on topic, they inherently do so and *must* do so, more so than most other
threads do. Successful game threads promote additional contributions;
unsuccessful ones or ones that do not keep people interested go the way of
regular threads and die away quietly.
So game threads meet the forum category, and they meet the posting requirements.
They bring fun and playfulness to the boards, and in my opinion, closing them
takes a little of the fun away and MT shines just a bit dimmer than before.
Please reconsider the closure.
Miketo does have a point here! I, personally was dissappointed when one of my
favorite games (Answer a question, Ask a question) was closed, with no truly
substantive explanation given for the reason, other
than:

I miss game threads already, and I'm quite dissapointed as well. Although I am

I've heard some people mention that they believe these forums were "get
leveled up quickly" attempts, which I could see with "What colour are
your eyes" and "What did you eat?" [if these are anyones threads,
no harm done.. they came right out of my head there for examples] but games
aren;'t nessesarily for leveling up. I played miketo's games, and my own, and
several others, almost everyday... i loved them... I think they have a place on
mt... it was part of my daily MT fix... check notifications, read forums and
view submissions.. i'm going to miss that.
I felt like the game forums, for example, miketo's "Answer a question, Ask
a question" allowed myself and many others to creatively express ourselves
while learning about eachother... but then again, thats only my opinion
^_^
iiregardless, its comes down to the fact that MT felt they were spam, and I will
not fight that, but possibly our opinions may become somewhat suggestive to the
fact that we weren't trying to spam... if that makes sense...

miketo, i am in total agreement. most of the threads that were closed were in

You mean the hand picked moderators that were given the authority to close
threads to the best of their judgement
were wrong? I agree. They shouldn't have the
right to exercise the authority they were given.
I thought the purpose of the spam lounge is to have spam in them as the title
suggest. I didn't know there was some type of standard in spam that we should
follow. It really becomes a question of taste, so I think the mod did a
subjective judgement on closing thread. Of course the modd have every power to
closed the threads eventhough we might think they are harmless. That is why we
have a complaint forum such as this one to voice our opinion. Isn't democracy

what's the point of having authority if not exercice it?? anyway i'm really
deeply saddened by this large closing of the games threads, i mean it was great
to play with you ppl, i had such great moments, and i'm sorry if i caused any
trouble like spamming (everyone of us did in these games), but that was kinda

You seem to miss the point. As said I am sorry for this but there is a problem.
While some members do partecipate in them gladly and have fun with them, it is a
sad truth that those game threads are spamholes. A new member could easily post
100 times in a day among the various threads, thus pratically bypassing the lvl
10 rules, because in those threads it's not uncommon to post 7-8 times a
day.
As you can see, it is completely unrelated to the thread itself or to the thread
author. But it would be stupid to have the level 10 rule AND allow those threads
where you can post many times a day even if you have basically nothing useful to
say ....
Oh and one more thing. It is called "spma lounge" because you can talk
of basically anything that does not fal under other categories. Doesn't mean
you can use it to bring your post count up ...

Wow, I didn't see that counter argument coming at all. I guess we should change
tact and blame the level 10 rule for messing up our spam.
I agree with Keltosh. He has a very good point/reason. I am a new member here
too. But I do not use the forum very much, and I don't post in the spam lounge.
It just makes things to easy for us new comers. I don't want to raise the ranks
by mindlessly spamming crap out my anus. I'd rather raise the ranks by being a
productive person.
Allowing people to spam without end, pretty much destroys the porpose of the
ranks. Yeah, I want to raise the ranks, I have quite a few scans favorited, and
I can't wait to get to lvl 10 so I can download them. But I don't want to
acheive it by spamming. Spam, is utterly useless, it serves little porpose and
takes up bandwidth.
I have no problem with people conversing with eachother. I just don't like the
idea of allowing people to turn the forum into a spamhole so they can hog server
bandwidth and climb the ranks quickly, unproductively, and unfairly. I think
Keltosh was right in deleting those threads.
(haha, it seems that Dccafdf beat me to some of the points I raised here... so
sorry for that.)
Errr, not to divert the direction of this thread, miketto, but may I reflect on
this recent turn of events, re: closure of popular threads due to being
'spamholes'?
Since this is the first time (do correct me if Im wrong here) that the mods have
implemented this kind of action on popular threads, then this would serve as a
precedent for future actions. That is, any popular thread that is being
subverted by MT members who are only out to gain easy levels will be most likely
closed, whatever enjoyment and participation/community-building pluses such
threads create.
i think that this action is not harshly directed toward the creator of the
thread, as Keltosh said. I think that this action serves as a reminder and a
little warning to MT members who have nothing in their minds but "The
levels! The levels! Gimme more levels!". That is, what I feel from
Keltosh's response up top.
I think we all felt that once in a while... the obsessive drive for levels when
we were at lower levels. I think that any smart person out there would quickly
realize that the easiest way to get the levels is to spend a lot of time in the
spam forums, and not in the groups, commenting in the galleries, speaking out in
the meaningful threads and getting involved in the various activities in MT.
In any case, I share my sympathies with you, miketto and all the others here, on
the "death" of your threads. It is a door closed. A door closed for
furthering participation and good, clean fun... but I feel that there are new doors opening and new doors yet to be
opened.
Looking at the bright side, we just have to find those new doors. There are
other creative means of participation/community building in MT besides Game/Spam
threads... It would be a challenge to our hearts and minds to come up with them!
It's just me, (since I am still relatively new here compare to you and minna)
but there is a danger when we stick just to one kind of thinking: in this case,
game/spam/forum threads as modes of promoting participation among the members
may lead to (and may already be heading that way) to a promotion/inculcation of
a "thread mentality" leading to a "spam mentality". (Hope
that came out right... sorry) Can I could mention some alternative modes of
promoting participation and community building here, aside from threads? Like
going out to the seemingly-marginalized groups in MT and talking/conversing with
them (especially the English-language-deficient quarters)... Two (2), proposing
group/community activities/contests where everyone flexes her/his minds and
feelings. Right now, I am planning to promote my Doujinshi/Caption
Writing/CG-Wall Contest Proposal to the Hispanime group, in order to increase
community building and participation from them. (ahah, but I have to purchase
that Spanish-English dictionary first! Sorry, Manxita, Noe, maho-ho and
hikarujm, wait for the book...^_^ )
i don't mean to lecture, sorry. I just wanted to present an oblique or different
take on this. I hope the 'meanings' were taken, and the 'form' discarded. Thanks
for the time, miketto and minna. ^_^ (memo to myself: get back to work,
Yomiko!!!)
Edit: But...
Quote by RevueYes, hmm... a day and 17

don't know about you, but seeing closed threads listed until the end of
the page is really disturbing. Not that I'm complaining
Err.... too many doors closing... most of the threads labeled "Game"
were closed... I think I have to revise some of my comments above...
Well......for me its more of when more than three people get involved. Dream's
topic was a good example of this. This is a good example
of what NOT do to. When three people go back and forth, talking about something
that isn't even remotely about the topic at hand, thats uncalled for.
Another example is one of Celessa's games. It reached an unbelievable 1500+
posts in less than ten days. Thats unheard of, nor should it be allowed. No
one should be posting in something that much to keep something like that going
for that many posts. Thats beyond out of hand in my book and I do NOT want to see something like that again here.
I love a good game topic as much as the next person, but how much of a spam
game do we need? Theres some I look at and just shake my head, because if I had
moderator power I'd close them. I agree with aspects and I agree even futher
that the rules should be advised. Its just that the MT staff is really, really
busy. This mainly being Sheqel, that man must be stressed out beyond belief.
I'm more than positive that something will be done about the rules in the
future, though this is still a really good point. Both at Kel's and Miketo's
end.
Thank you for the more complete explanation Keltosh.
Now may I suggest we all go to another thread, started recently by shinsengumi,
that proposed posting limits, according to level: Restricting Creation of New
Threads This would seem to be a viable alternative to closing game
threads.
I would however like to make another suggestion, if I may.
Would the mods consider putting an upper limit on the number of posts any one
thread can receive. (2000+ is alot) This would serve 2 purposes. The games would
get changed up a bit as a thread hit its limit and it would also serve to share
the wealth, as it were. No one member would consistently receive the benefits of
posts to that thread.
This would also take some of the heat off the mods since there is no discretion
on their part involved! Thread hits the limit - closed - done deal!
Pax : I'm sure you've checked, but I wrote up a set of suggestions towards the
forum if you haven't checked it out you might want to consider. Its nothing
special just something I had and wanted to see if people could possibly help me
out with it or else add. I agree though, limiting posts is something that is
needed here at MT. Spam is becomming too
frequent and posts are doubling. To prevent the cases that other forums get
(i.e. 500 posts in like an hout) a limit would cause people to conserve and
think. Something that not many people do when posting on a forum, well very few
do (hell I usually don't, depending on the seriousness of the topic). Though
that is a great point.
i didn't want to post just after my post, but I just had to add to this @_@
Sorry.

Just a general question then...is there any way to dedicate a set section for
spam based threads where the posts in that section doesn't add to the overall
postcount? I'm just wondering because I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't

Hi - I just wanted to thank Mike for bringing this topic up - I learned a lot
and I hope that goes for all involved. I think if the mods had explained just a
little more their reasons then people would obvioulsy be more understanding.
This would be good in all cases, when possible.

I agree with CTEon. The particular name is quite misleading... I was under the
assumption that game threads weren't categorized as spam- but it's not up for me
to decide.
It's horrible to think that members only out for the leveling up craze are
ruining these fun games. I wonder if therewould be some sort of agreement point,
as in what if in threads you are limited to say 3 posts per day? [or any number
you choose] that way no one could really spam them up for levels, so to
speak.
Secondly, the 2000 limit on a thread is very intriguing, but yet I think 1000
would be also acceptable. That being said, if there was a dsignated area for
game threads there could only be a select few, because we would make sure only
one type of game thread with the same idea existed. [some threads were slightly
different but still the same idea]
KEltosh makes a very good point, one I brought up in my first post. The fact
remains that the majority of forumers on these game threads were not trying to
spam... I wonder if maybe there could be a way to make a happy medium- as in,
no one under level 10 can use them? then maybe the spam would suffice. These are
just suggestions, either way it comes up to the mods. I do not nessesarily agree
fully on closing game treads, but I understand the reason why. I just hope to
help make them suitable once again, or at least prove that not everyone meant to
harm the bandwidth with excessive spamming.
Quote by belmikryI wonder if maybe there

well that would be kinda sad for newbs........ i think many of us made friends
in these threads, even being under lvl 10. i mean i know most of the noob (guys)
want to get to the girl scan, which btw are a little too ecchi (really MT is
opened for all ages?? when you see what's in there !!.. but not the point), but
not all of them are spammers....
thx paxt for the link, i think he made a point in this thread, it's true that
noob post too much duplicates.... and he's got a nice idea !!
i think one solution would be really to make all ecchi scans (or girls with
'sexual' poses) suppresed and forbidden (i mean the wallers don't use these this
much......) to only keep the ones with presentable girls. thus the lvl 10 limit
wouldn't be so attractive for noob, only for those who really want to use the
scans to wall. and then you'll have a real community, where the games wouldn't
be spammed (or only by ppl who have fun in these, and not want to reach lvl
10)
but i think that some of MT members wouldn't agree to suppress the ecchi scans..
but the solution could be that the ppl who want these scans go to the ecchi
group (most of the scans comes from 4chan or other websites)

You seem to miss the point. As said I am sorry for this but there is a problem. While some members do partecipate in them gladly and have fun with them, it is a sad truth that those game threads are spamholes. A new member could easily post 100 times in a day among the various threads, thus pratically bypassing the lvl 10 rules, because in those threads it's not uncommon to post 7-8 times a day.
As you can see, it is completely unrelated to the thread itself or to the thread author. But it would be stupid to have the level 10 rule AND allow those threads where you can post many times a day even if you have basically nothing useful to say ....
Oh and one more thing. It is called "spma lounge" because you can talk of basically anything that does not fal under other categories. Doesn't mean you can use it to bring your post count up ...
Woah. Good point. I never think of that before.
^_^'
Wow, I didn't see that counter argument coming at all. I guess we should change tact and blame the level 10 rule for messing up our spam.
I agree with Keltosh. He has a very good point/reason. I am a new member here too. But I do not use the forum very much, and I don't post in the spam lounge. It just makes things to easy for us new comers. I don't want to raise the ranks by mindlessly spamming crap out my anus. I'd rather raise the ranks by being a productive person.
Allowing people to spam without end, pretty much destroys the porpose of the ranks. Yeah, I want to raise the ranks, I have quite a few scans favorited, and I can't wait to get to lvl 10 so I can download them. But I don't want to acheive it by spamming. Spam, is utterly useless, it serves little porpose and takes up bandwidth.
I have no problem with people conversing with eachother. I just don't like the idea of allowing people to turn the forum into a spamhole so they can hog server bandwidth and climb the ranks quickly, unproductively, and unfairly. I think Keltosh was right in deleting those threads.
(haha, it seems that Dccafdf beat me to some of the points I raised here... so sorry for that.)
Errr, not to divert the direction of this thread, miketto, but may I reflect on this recent turn of events, re: closure of popular threads due to being 'spamholes'?
Since this is the first time (do correct me if Im wrong here) that the mods have implemented this kind of action on popular threads, then this would serve as a precedent for future actions. That is, any popular thread that is being subverted by MT members who are only out to gain easy levels will be most likely closed, whatever enjoyment and participation/community-building pluses such threads create.
i think that this action is not harshly directed toward the creator of the thread, as Keltosh said. I think that this action serves as a reminder and a little warning to MT members who have nothing in their minds but "The levels! The levels! Gimme more levels!". That is, what I feel from Keltosh's response up top.
I think we all felt that once in a while... the obsessive drive for levels when we were at lower levels. I think that any smart person out there would quickly realize that the easiest way to get the levels is to spend a lot of time in the spam forums, and not in the groups, commenting in the galleries, speaking out in the meaningful threads and getting involved in the various activities in MT.
In any case, I share my sympathies with you, miketto and all the others here, on the "death" of your threads. It is a door closed. A door closed for furthering participation and good, clean fun... but I feel that there are new doors opening and new doors yet to be opened.
Looking at the bright side, we just have to find those new doors. There are other creative means of participation/community building in MT besides Game/Spam threads... It would be a challenge to our hearts and minds to come up with them! It's just me, (since I am still relatively new here compare to you and minna) but there is a danger when we stick just to one kind of thinking: in this case, game/spam/forum threads as modes of promoting participation among the members may lead to (and may already be heading that way) to a promotion/inculcation of a "thread mentality" leading to a "spam mentality". (Hope that came out right... sorry) Can I could mention some alternative modes of promoting participation and community building here, aside from threads? Like going out to the seemingly-marginalized groups in MT and talking/conversing with them (especially the English-language-deficient quarters)... Two (2), proposing group/community activities/contests where everyone flexes her/his minds and feelings. Right now, I am planning to promote my Doujinshi/Caption Writing/CG-Wall Contest Proposal to the Hispanime group, in order to increase community building and participation from them. (ahah, but I have to purchase that Spanish-English dictionary first! Sorry, Manxita, Noe, maho-ho and hikarujm, wait for the book...^_^ )
i don't mean to lecture, sorry. I just wanted to present an oblique or different take on this. I hope the 'meanings' were taken, and the 'form' discarded. Thanks for the time, miketto and minna. ^_^ (memo to myself: get back to work, Yomiko!!!)
Edit: But...
Err.... too many doors closing... most of the threads labeled "Game" were closed... I think I have to revise some of my comments above...
Well......for me its more of when more than three people get involved. Dream's topic was a good example of this. This is a good example of what NOT do to. When three people go back and forth, talking about something that isn't even remotely about the topic at hand, thats uncalled for.
Another example is one of Celessa's games. It reached an unbelievable 1500+ posts in less than ten days. Thats unheard of, nor should it be allowed. No one should be posting in something that much to keep something like that going for that many posts. Thats beyond out of hand in my book and I do NOT want to see something like that again here. I love a good game topic as much as the next person, but how much of a spam game do we need? Theres some I look at and just shake my head, because if I had moderator power I'd close them. I agree with aspects and I agree even futher that the rules should be advised. Its just that the MT staff is really, really busy. This mainly being Sheqel, that man must be stressed out beyond belief.
I'm more than positive that something will be done about the rules in the future, though this is still a really good point. Both at Kel's and Miketo's end.
Thank you for the more complete explanation Keltosh.
Now may I suggest we all go to another thread, started recently by shinsengumi, that proposed posting limits, according to level: Restricting Creation of New Threads This would seem to be a viable alternative to closing game threads.
I would however like to make another suggestion, if I may.
Would the mods consider putting an upper limit on the number of posts any one thread can receive. (2000+ is alot) This would serve 2 purposes. The games would get changed up a bit as a thread hit its limit and it would also serve to share the wealth, as it were. No one member would consistently receive the benefits of posts to that thread.
This would also take some of the heat off the mods since there is no discretion on their part involved! Thread hits the limit - closed - done deal!
Whatcha think?
Pax : I'm sure you've checked, but I wrote up a set of suggestions towards the forum if you haven't checked it out you might want to consider. Its nothing special just something I had and wanted to see if people could possibly help me out with it or else add. I agree though, limiting posts is something that is needed here at MT. Spam is becomming too frequent and posts are doubling. To prevent the cases that other forums get (i.e. 500 posts in like an hout) a limit would cause people to conserve and think. Something that not many people do when posting on a forum, well very few do (hell I usually don't, depending on the seriousness of the topic). Though that is a great point.
i didn't want to post just after my post, but I just had to add to this @_@ Sorry.
Just a general question then...is there any way to dedicate a set section for spam based threads where the posts in that section doesn't add to the overall postcount? I'm just wondering because I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't worry too much about the post count and just likes to play those games because it's fun =\
Also maybe a change of name for spam lounge to perhaps something such as general chat is more appropriate since the name spam lounge does give the misconception that spam is indeed allowed in places like MT e.e
Hi - I just wanted to thank Mike for bringing this topic up - I learned a lot and I hope that goes for all involved. I think if the mods had explained just a little more their reasons then people would obvioulsy be more understanding. This would be good in all cases, when possible.
I agree with CTEon. The particular name is quite misleading... I was under the assumption that game threads weren't categorized as spam- but it's not up for me to decide.
It's horrible to think that members only out for the leveling up craze are ruining these fun games. I wonder if therewould be some sort of agreement point, as in what if in threads you are limited to say 3 posts per day? [or any number you choose] that way no one could really spam them up for levels, so to speak.
Secondly, the 2000 limit on a thread is very intriguing, but yet I think 1000 would be also acceptable. That being said, if there was a dsignated area for game threads there could only be a select few, because we would make sure only one type of game thread with the same idea existed. [some threads were slightly different but still the same idea]
KEltosh makes a very good point, one I brought up in my first post. The fact remains that the majority of forumers on these game threads were not trying to spam... I wonder if maybe there could be a way to make a happy medium- as in, no one under level 10 can use them? then maybe the spam would suffice. These are just suggestions, either way it comes up to the mods. I do not nessesarily agree fully on closing game treads, but I understand the reason why. I just hope to help make them suitable once again, or at least prove that not everyone meant to harm the bandwidth with excessive spamming.
well that would be kinda sad for newbs........ i think many of us made friends in these threads, even being under lvl 10. i mean i know most of the noob (guys) want to get to the girl scan, which btw are a little too ecchi (really MT is opened for all ages?? when you see what's in there !!.. but not the point), but not all of them are spammers....
thx paxt for the link, i think he made a point in this thread, it's true that noob post too much duplicates.... and he's got a nice idea !!
i think one solution would be really to make all ecchi scans (or girls with 'sexual' poses) suppresed and forbidden (i mean the wallers don't use these this much......) to only keep the ones with presentable girls. thus the lvl 10 limit wouldn't be so attractive for noob, only for those who really want to use the scans to wall. and then you'll have a real community, where the games wouldn't be spammed (or only by ppl who have fun in these, and not want to reach lvl 10)
but i think that some of MT members wouldn't agree to suppress the ecchi scans.. but the solution could be that the ppl who want these scans go to the ecchi group (most of the scans comes from 4chan or other websites)
sorry i think i kinda wandered off path
