mental illness is a major problem in society. what makes it so hard to deal
with is that we dont know much about about. i mean yeah, we've analyzed the
brain for chemicals and have resorted to therapy. but which is better? being
prescribed pills? or having someone talk you through it all?
The fact is that mental illnesses (such as schizophrenia) are the result of both
an inborn affection and and acquired trauma, or a reavealing episode (such as a
troublesome event lifting the veil over a latent form of the disease). Thus,
neither taking a pill, neither talking or working on self can ever solve the
problem. In fact, some of those illnesses cannot be eradicated and can only be
mastered and repressed with both medication and psychotherapy.
On another hand, I think that medication is overused and seen as an easier way
to find happiness or to escape unhappiness, like in depression cases. Vallium,
Prozac , etc... are efficient ways to control depressive episodes though they
are widely distributed as a miracle antidote to the somewhat sometimes
inevitable unhappiness, seeing how some live their lives (job, job, job, stress,
bad mariage, etc). Those people should rather work on self to find the source of
their pain but taking a pill is so much faster and -apparently- more
efficient.
In other cases, though, people talk talk talk to psychologists, like
psychological hypocondriacs, whilst all they need would be to get over
themselves and stop feeding their intrinsical thought of being neurotic and just
live life with all the problems it carries.
To sum it up, I'm on both sides and neither.... Oh my god!
What an ambivalency. Send me to a psychologist and give me pills, please!
I'd rather go talk it out w/ somebody. I think pills are sort of a quick fix.
And in such a busy world, people always look for, and doctors are quicker to
prescribe, pills. Although, sometimes it really is beneficial to have pills,
but that should be coupled w/ talking with somebody so you can really get
whatever's on your mind out in the open.

Well... I hate pills and I hate to talk... Nothing helps, but I have to go to the psychiatrist and therapist always..
