I feel like I'm the only person within my 10mile radius that doesn't think FF
games are great. I played through 8, 10 and a bit of 12 on PS2 and I don't
really see the big fuss.
First of all, random encounters are annoying. I can only fight the exact same
battle so many times before it gets boring. The items to reduce random encs
don't come till late in the game. The lack of cinematic skip in 8 and 10 was bad
too. I couldn't get myself to play the games again. The stories don't really
impress me. I've seen anime with more intense story telling. The stories aren't
bad by any means. The long GF summons in 8, the slightly shorter aeon summons in
10 and the girly transformations in 12 all got repetitive. How do people sit and
play this game for 50 hours watching the same GF animation over and over again?
(especialy in 8 where they are pretty damn long). I don't find the gameplay to
be complex at all. You don't have enough control over your character's
development. Plus the games are all pretty linear. Often times, getting a game
over means you got to redo 5-30 mins of stuff. In FFX, the part before I fight
yunalesca was especially annoying. Each time I lost, I had to sit through a
really long cinematic. Same with the final boss.
Now I admit that the graphics are top notch (except for the in-game characters
in 8). But good graphics and godly cinematics didn't cut it for me. I wanted a
fun game, not a movie. I liked the fantasy elements in these games but the
gameplay is too tedious for me to endure.
Yeah, a zillion FF fans are probably going to start flaming now....
Is it possible that someone feels the same way I do? Post quickly!!
I must agree that FF VIII is terrible with the battles. FF X wasn't so terrible
in terms of repetitiveness because the battles were fast paced. I think things
just became focused more on graphics after FF VII. That is why my favourite
Final Fantasy game is probably FF VI! Go SNES graphics!
One thing you should know about the Final Fantasy series is that each new game
is pratically a different game, except for ffx-2, which is the only direct
sequel. Each game has a new storyline, battle system (for the most part),
characters. The similar elements that are in all of the Final Fantasy's are the
names of most of the spells, some of the enemies, the items, the re-occuring
character Cid, and sometimes your basic plot to 'save the world'. Don't get me
wrong, I like the Final Fantasy series, but that's because in my opinion they're
all pretty good games, aside from the name. The gameplay and the storyline are
usually pretty good, but the reason why it's not entirely complex is because it
needs to be convenient, in other words, easy enough to get right into the action
without having to read the manual or remember a lot of stuff. The only Final
Fantasy series that I can think of with a complex gameplay is the Final Fantasy
Tactics series. I also agree with you, I though FF8 was crap, because of the
gameplay.
Square-Enix is basically milking the Final
Fantasy name for what it's worth. As I had said earlier, each Final
Fantasy game is a practically new game, with the exception of the trademark
elements from previous series. All of the games aren't perfect, but in my
opinion for the most part they're good if not great games and would be even if
they didn't have the Final Fantasy name tagged onto it.
You know what makes a great game? When the storyline is only as good as it's
gameplay. ^_^
<lol> I hear you. I've only
played 10, and some of eight. 10-2 doesn't appeal to me much. :P (<--just
prefers playing as a male chara...though I can't say Tidus counted as much of
one), and while the graphics are great (agreed), they're not -totally-gripping-
stories. And...(and I'm probably going to get shot for this, too) I liked
Kingdom Hearts better hands down anyways. I'm
immature, sue me.
"milking for what they're worth" sounds good and accurate. Probably a
helluva lot, too. If I was
them, I'd be doing the same.
imo the ones u played werent one of the better ffs. 8 just sucked and 10 wasnt
that great either. i only played 10-2 to get all the dresspheres. you should try
playing ffvi and vii
Quote: imo the ones u played werent

Each to their own but... I liked 8 way more than 7.
ok first of all it doesnt sound like your a big fan or rpgs but i may be wrong.
of your not then that is one good reason why you wouldnt like FF. also as others
have said you have actually played the worse FFs. 5, 6 , and 7 were my personal
fav but then again a majority of the FF fans out there have played the ones you
have played only. so anyways, i agree with you on that the FFs you played are
nothing special and i never saw why they get so much of a fanbase. there are so
many better rpgs out there and like you said i hate the fact that these crappy
FFs of recent take all the attention
I'll start with saying that I don't really play RPG's, and the only Final
Fantasy I've played is a wee bit of VII. But I can relay to you the option of my
RPG loving friends.
From what I hear, 8 and 10 are the worse of the series. 9 and X-2 aren't so
great either. They really like 5, 6 (this one being the best), 7, and maybe 4
too.
I can, however, totally agree with what Trowble said about Square-Enix really
milking the "Final Fantasy" title. You ever see The Spirits Within?
Perfect example. And it seems that any given year, if a FF game was released in
it, it gets RPG of the year with the popular gaming publications no matter how
good it was. Kind of bothersome.
perhapes they just out of ideas on the story line, so they try to focus more on
the graphic to interst the gamer,
but i have to agree that 8, 10, and X-2 suck, esspecially X-2, just seeing the
preview i already loss my interest to play it.
The games you have played is in my opinon the worst ones in the series. Final
Fantasy VII and Tactics are the only ones I really like in the series, but you
are right; Final Fantasy is overrated. Well...if you want to play an RPG you've
got to have a lot of patiense. I myself play them for the extensive storyline
that you most often find in RPGs (yes, there are exceptions).
Final Fantasy 4 is my favourite out of all the FF games, just becaus ea game has
nice graphics doesn't mean its better than something with a phenominal storyline
and good gameplay! Out of the newer FF games I like 9 the best, and am waiting
for 12 since the guy who did Final Fantasy Tactics (I <3 FFT) is doing 12 so
it might not suck
well here's hoping it doesn't anyways *knocks on
wood*
Here's my RPG picks:
Earthbound
Secret of Mana
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy 4
Xenogears (play this, screw Xenosaga :p)
Persona 1 & 2
Bahamut Lagoon
I liked all the final fantasy games i have played, as they were different to the
other games in my house (mostly my brothers). I have loved the story and i like
learning stuff as the characters learn it. The only problem is i keep getting
stuck and no one can help me get out of it! In ff x im stuck at Evae, he is
really hard he kills me just before i kill him!
i liked 7 and 8.......but after that....i only found each of the games
so-so
and you don't have to fight alot of random battles in FF8, since u get diablo
quite early in the game, i got though the entire game with squall at lvl
11......thx to the junction system
if u want a more interactive battle....i think you should try out Star Ocean: A
Second Story for ps1, or wait for Star Ocean: Till end of time for ps2 which is
suppose to come out in august (hope they don't delay)
Well...you've only played a few FF games...you've got to play some of the other
ones too and beat the whole game. Final Fantasy is one of the greatest RPGs out
there, well, maybe not the greatest, but one of the good ones. Maybe you don't
like it, but for us RPGers, it's a good game. I don't think FF VIII was that
great and FF X-2 is somewhat pointless O_o. Yeah, some of the games sucked, but
you've got to try the other ones out there too. You can't just base your
opinion on those three that you've played.
I personally like Final Fantasy VII not because of graphics or anything, but
because of the storyline.
Someone said something about each of the FF games were different, right? Well,
I heard that the creator is going to keep creating one until he ummm
"perfects" the game or something. So each of the games are different
for a reason. They're different because each one is being improved or the
creator is trying experimenting with all of them to see which one everyone
likes. Don't take my word for it though, this is what I heard from someone. That person could be wrong =p
I love FF vi-x. Yes, I even loved the often bashed FF viii. I haven't played FF
XI because online gaming for FF is too different for my taste--though it is
intriguing to say the least. And FF X-2 was...okay. I mean, the storyline was
the weakest of the franchise (though not bad compared to other RPGs) and the
whole thing of getting 100% completion was really frustrating--I swear it pissed
me off so many times.
I'm looking forward to the day when Square Enix makes an FF game bringing back a
large cast like FF VI or FF VII.
But if you want to try an FF that isn't simply button-mashing and random fights,
play FF Tactics. Unless you hate tactic/strategy RPGs too.
Whats wrong with X-2? There's nothing wrong with the game system. In fact, the
system is a step up. It's just the girlish, light-heated story that you people
don't like (I don't like it much either). But look at whats improved.
1. Finally you can skip some in-game cinematics. The 50 hour gameplay Sqaure
ensured no longer feel so....cheap
2. Can stop random encounters earlier with items. I got that item like 5 hours
into the game, which was approximately when I got sick of the battles. I didn't
know Diablo had such ability the first time I played ff8
3. More control of your characters at last. In FF8, you have next to no control.
It was all about what you junction. Squall gets too strong since you can't ever
kick him off your team. In ff10, everyone's sphere grid is too linear (except
Kimahri). Finally in X-2, you get to choose your class and what skills to
learn.
4. The game was slightly more challenging. I managed to get game overs!!! in FF8
and 10, it was all too easy.
5. Chain attacks are a minor but nice addition.
You got to admit, the game system is better. I found it less tedious. I guess
they were trying to bring girls to the FF fanbase with a story like that. That
didn't seem to work.
3 out of 12 is a good representation of the game series I think. Considering how
a good portion of the fanbase lies there. I only have a PS2 so the only other FF
game I might get is ff7.
Personally, with the exception of Tactics, I thought that pretty much all of the
FF games after VI sucked. I never brought myself to play VII. It is probably the
most hyped FF game ever. I heard so much about the game before and after it came
out that I had lost all desire to even play it, even today.
The quality of the stories have gone to the wayside in order to make way for
beautiful graphics. A side effect of this is that games have gotten shorter and
shorter. Sure, if you do all of the side-quests you could add 10-20 hours of
gameplay to the game, but nearly all of the side-quests don't affect the main
storyline; they are simply fillers thrown in so that companies can state that
the game has "30+ hours of gameplay" on the box. Contrast that to FF
VI where most of the side-quests at the end of the game revolved around getting
back all of the other characters, quite a few of which added more story to the
game. Many of the advances in games today revolve around advances in the game's
technology rather than what should be
the driving force behind the game: it's story. The Final Fantasy series is no
exception to this.
If you want a good FF experience, I suggest playing either IV (II in the US -
re-released under it's original title with Chrono Trigger in the FF Chronicles
set for ps1), V (released along with VI in the FF Anthologies set for PS1) VI
(III in the US). I would also recommend Tactics, which has a rather intriguing
story, but that is a different kind of game altogether. Another really good,
story driven RPG, though not a FF game, would be Xenogears (also my personally
favorite console RPG of all time).
As for random battles, that is something you're simply going to have to deal
with. They have been with console RPGs since the days of yore and aren't likely
to go away any time soon. The same thing goes with the rather linear gameplay.
If you want a good non-linear, random battle-less RPG, you should check out the
Elder Scroll series for the computer, the latest of which is Morrowind which has
also been released on the Xbox.
No, you are not the only one that feels the Final Fantasy series is over-rated.
Like everything else that goes from being a cult classic to being mainstream, it
has become over-rated and to an extent even crappy.
FF seems to divide people into 3 groups: those who hate it, those who like the
newer games (VII and forward), and those who like the older ones (VI and older).
Sure, it's not going to interest some people, just like not all people like FPS,
or racing, or sports, or fighting, or simulations. Many of the haters resent all
the attention FF gets, but, when a series has been around for so long, and been
so popular with large numbers of people, those people want to hear about their
favorite game. No one can deny that each FF (yes even X-2) is a grand
undertaking, requiring many hours of play, and amazing skill to create. Then,
there is the dissention among the FF lovers...the old-schoolers claim that the
new games have dumped story/character development/gameplay for improved
graphics. I personally disagree with this viewpoint. All the FF stories, love
'em or hate 'em are huge affairs, with twists, turns, and a mosaic of personal
and worldshaking issues. Especially I feel that voiced characters (and I didn't
mind any of the voices in X or X-2) creates more personalized characters,
helping convey emotions that previously had to be illustrated by music or
imagery.
FF supporters and detractors also tend to be very vocal, understandable
considering the magnatude of the subject of their arguments. The haters and
old-school supporters, being the minority, are also more vicious in their
debate. The fact that so many newbies have only been exposed to the absolute
worst games from their standpoint only fuels their anger. Unfortunate, but
that's the way it is.
Now, rumors have been spreading about Square-Enix finally closing out the
series, and accusations about S-E milking the series, making it mainstream at
the cost of game quality (except graphics), fuelled by all the newcomers drawn
in by the impressive visuals. Both issues are possibly true, the second more
than the first in my opinion (why would S-E shut down a guaranteed multi-million
dollar franchise?). But as an FF supporter I worry about the true decline of the
series due to quantity over quality mentality.
I feel like I'm the only person within my 10mile radius that doesn't think FF games are great. I played through 8, 10 and a bit of 12 on PS2 and I don't really see the big fuss.
First of all, random encounters are annoying. I can only fight the exact same battle so many times before it gets boring. The items to reduce random encs don't come till late in the game.
