When I type something that contains an apostrophe using Microsoft Word and then
cut/copy and paste it in a forum/Gb post, the apostrophe appears as a?? instead
of an ' mark e.g. don't appears as dona??t. This problem only comes to light
after an entry has been submitted. If you then decide to edit what you've
written, all of the apostrophes will appear as normal but they're not. The only
thing I can do to correct the word is to remove the original apostrophe made in
MS Word and replace it with a new one once my text has been pasted into the MT
submit post box even though nothing appears to be wrong with my original text. I
think that PMs suffer from this problem too. Is this a glitch on MT? I thought
it was just me experiencing this but yesterday I came across a GB post made by
another member and it exhibited the same sort of problems I've just described
here.
It's because the apostrophe mark isn't the one in the character set used in the
forums, and as the forums don't quite support unicode, they appear as gibberish.
about the GB post, all i know is that the smileys don't get through, but so far
the apostrophe have worked fine for me.... but did you paste a GB post from
word? that would imply the ' to go like ?? again
hope that help, i don't know if that can be fixed, but you can make a suggestion
in the support section http://support.minitokyo.net/
Thanks for clearing that up for me Shinsengumi. Will unicode be supported
anytime soon to correct problems such as these do you think? I'm in the process
of getting a voice recognition system because I find typing tiring (due to m.s.)
and I'm not sure if I'll be able to use it with MT. If that's the case, then
I'll have to use MS Word to type my reply if I want to make a longish post. The
apostrophe problems would be a real pain.

Most likely it will not be fully
supported because members are supposed to only use English in the forums, making
unicode generally unnecessary. Anyhow, it's not really a problem if your
apostrophes come out strange, as it's something most of us are used to seeing
now. Hope that answers your question!
Yes, it does Shinsengumi, thankyou very much for that. I thought that if I
posted something with all that stuff instead of proper apostrophes, other
members would get really irritated by my posts and just skip them, but I feel
much happier knowing that most of you are used to seeing that sort of thing!
Thanks Shinsengumi
Microsoft Word, by default, will replace the ' and ", which are straight
apostrophe/single quote and straight double quote, with ones that are properly
angeled (they will be different if you place it before a word, or in the
middle/after a word. However, angled quotes are not part of the standard 255
ascii character set, and thus require extra encoding. There are dozens of extra
encodings since any language with typical characters outside the 255
alphanumeric set, in other words, about 99% of the languages out there. One of
the typical encodings is Unicode; however, Word defaults to using Western
encoding (if you are using an English version, that is.) The difference between
Unicode and Western encoding protocols is what causes the bizarre characters -
unicode has no clue what Word is saying. In other words: I would suggest typing
your entries in Notepad, OR turning off Word's autocorrection for smart quotes,
if you want to copy and paste the text from elsewhere.

yeah it happened to me when i typed a huge thread in word (it's a red sticky one in the spam lounge).... so i had to edit all of it and change every single '
i think things work okay if you use notepad (though there aren't as much options as word). there's also a problem with accents (for french ppl like me it's a pain not to write with it, it gives something like é........ but i get used to it to talk to my french friends here)
