I've just had an interesting conversation with my friend about Gattaca the movie
or genes overall. In the movie people are analyzed at birth for genetic faults
and are limited to what they can do in life from those defects. What are your
feelings about the advances in technology that could one day do this to your
children. Is it fair that people might be restricted to what they can or can't
d.
For example, if in contemporary society companies can read all about your
defects and deny you a job based on your heart condition that was discovered in
your genes from birth.
Is this a possibility at all? Is society becoming less or more prejudice. any
opinion is welcomed.
(my apologies if this thread is a duplicate)
An interesting question. Advances in our technology today have enhanced our
ability to see beyond our usual sights and do more than we were given to do. I
feel that these advancements can better prepare the people with how nearly
similar genes could result in mutations, or even the genetic faults as you
mentioned which can result in the change of life. This may be unbearable to the
parents of the child, but I do believe that the parents should understand that
the world is evolving, and with its evolution are our ways of finding out
different things.
Society is becoming more prejudiced today than it was in the past. Today, people
make sure you're in working order, so physicals at the doctor's office are given
prior to work. These are when the conditions, if any, are analyzed. If there are
any conditions, then doctors may want to further test their patients. It's
possible that some people are not accepted in society because of their genes,
which I think it rather absurd, but I'm sure that the specialists could
manipulate genes through the use of genetic engineering.

So do you believe that to overcome this one has to allow scientists to
manipulate genes and fix these defects? I agree in one way, for example if you
have the gene for asthma then they should fix it but this could lead to parents
"customizing" the appearance of their child to look more like them or
a certain celebrity which i believe is morally and ethically wrong. I guess
this issue can't be clearly defined.

The thing is, whos to define these mortals and ethics? A certain religion? Then
thats just discriminating agaisnst religons who think otherwise, its not a law.
Not yet at least. This was an issue in the anime Gundam SEED too... where there
was a war between the genetically modified and the naturals. The thing is..
wouldnt it be a good thing? Genetically modifing our next generation could fix
all birth defects, increase intelegence, make everyone immune to all diseases,
increase the life span.. fix all the flaws that nature gave us. Humans have
already been evolving intelectually.. why not boost it a step further? With the
technology the modify humans, its the same technology used to clone them too..
is that morally wrong too? That we're tampering with god's design? But whos to
say his design was right.. what about religons who dont believe in god. Once we
can control life itself, we would be able to fix everything else in the world.
Poverty, world hunger.. created by ignorant people, what if we could rid the
world of them? Make a new super race.. of course we would now be inferior. But
its for the good of mankind.. what if we could make a human that could save this
planet instead of destroying it. So many things can be acheieved by this
technology.. at the same time, once we can control life? makes u wonder.. what
is life, if a persons personality, intelegence, appeareance can be all
calobrated in a lab.. what are we? How would the people who are 'created' by
humans feel.. This is why this issue is so controversial. I asked a lot of
questions, becuase noone has found the answers yet, but one day they will..
I've never seen gundam seed, was never into mech but i thin i might check them
out now. Sounds like alot of issues are explored in there. Some of these
issues are also explored in EVA and i guess thats why i was attracted to that
anime.

To tell you the truth, I
believe that gene manipulation is wrong due to a variety of reasons. If there
were undesired results because of manipulation, then the specialists could be
persecuted. However, I'm sure that there are some people who would rather try to
get the desired results than to be stuck with the DNA they were born with. Also,
there are some people who are in love with each other and whose genes are quite
identical, so gene manipulation may become a factor to prevent a mutation when
birth is given.
