I'm not sure if MT members are familiar with his, IMO, better works such as
King of Comedy God of Cookery which i think are more hilarious than his new
recently american released Kung Fu Hustle which is just filled with too much
converntial special effects and slapstick .
I mean i've never seen a chinese comedy just start busting into a dramatic song
like God of cookery, that was just too funny that i couldn't stop laughing for a
while.
What do you think? If you have seen his older movies do you think they're
better in terms of comedy and plot?
Hehe, yes! I've recently seen one of his old movies..I forgot what it was
called...but I think it was Kung Fu Hustle... and seriously, it was
lame......but sooo funny!!! Yup, I
actually liked it! Besides, he looked so much younger in that movie than in real life
now. XP But to your question, I think they're both good in terms of comedy and
plot...With that movie I said, I found it to be quite ingenious when it came to
the plot, but the humor was er..."dry" but still funny...It's not
really "cleaver comedy" that's for sure. LOL
haha I'm an old school fan of Stephen Chow. He's been famous in Hong Kong for a
while. He's made some amazingly funny films and also some horrible ones. I find
that the jokes are alot funnier if you can understand cantonese because u might
not get the context of the jokes from the subtitles.
God of Cookery was a classic and I highly highly recommend Shaolin Soccer. I
enjoyed Kung Fu hustle also but like I said it's probably because I can
understand cantonese.
Ya, his old films were funnier...but his new ones are good too. Support him,
even though his films are alittle "overexagerrated". But thats what
makes his films good.
i saw kung fu hustle before it came out in america. it was in chinese and it was
so funny! but the plot was kinda weird and...well stupid...that was my first
movie from stephen chow though.

No, he really did a god of gambling....... he covered mahjong to poker to black
jack .. however i haven't seen chow yung fat's so it probably is a spoof.

the new ones not so bad but its not an original comedy anymore...
his older movies have comedies u cant find anywhere else..
but new ones are just copies of his older comic actions...
anyway, i still like his movies since it still funny and can release some of the
tensions~

I agree, more original comedy rather than depending on cg effects
I've seen King of Gamblers and it was a total spoof..... I forgot who the actor
was but I really think it's Stephen Chow..... just maybe....
I've tried Google, but I can't read Chinese so don't really know who the actor

Chow Yun Fat starred in God of Gamblers and Return of God of Gamblers. It really
rocks. One thing that bugs me is that he changed his name in the second one.
i saw Shaolin Soccer yesterday and it was really a good movie, nothing that
would make me say: WoooooooW but still a good movie. I havent seen kungfu hustle
right now becaus it starts just in a few days here in Germany.

Gamblers n God of Cookery(is it?) the old works are definately better i cant
really understand cantonese..but i can make out most of it( this cos i mix
cantonese n hokkien )
Stephen Chow is one of the funniest actors that I've seen... I usually see his
movies after going to midnight mass... I especially had a great laugh after
watching "God of Cookery."
i've never seen his older movies, but kung fu hustle was pretty funny..
i think shaolin soccer is better though.

ive been watching him for like ages already.. i love his works, yes even kung hu
hustle.. i love saint of gambling and god of cookery.. although i've watched a
good deal of his movies, i forgot most of the titles..

Tricky Brain and God of Gambler: Return to Shanghai (I hope I got that last name correct) are very good shows from Stephen Chow too.

to my knowledge (which is really limited) stephen chow is the only slap-stick comedian in china ...
ive seen lots of comedy movies and such, but not slap stick, supposedly more "evolved" humor. course, Stephen Chow is just downright awesome.
<oh, and do you know the one where he goes "Bolom-Bolom" and travels back in time .. ? Pretty sure that was Stephen Chow ...>
