Hmm i'm considering going to a dual boot system with linux too. so i want to
know, since i never HAD linux, (and i HATE windows) is it worth it? if so,
which version of it should i get? And can you suggest some modules/programs you
deem must-have? (ok, this one is probably for linux maniacs )
The only image editing program I can think of for linux is gimp, and is
available at: http://www.gimp.org
It doesn't do as much as photoshop. Other than that... I have to confess I don't
know a huge amount about Linux. If you ask me it's really not worth it though,
as windows isn't the best thing but at least it runs everything.
Linux is useful if you know how to use it, I personally don't use it alot
because I'm a complete dependent on windows drivers and the easiness of the os.
If you want to compile drivers so it works on linux and what not and install
programs, it takes much more effort and what not but I guess there are some pros
to it.
i would probably recommend Redhat9 even though it's not supported, it will teach
you about some of the basics, then if you want to go a bit advanced, go with
Debian linux, somewhat harder to configure from what I heard. Also you have to
decide whether your keen on using the GUI or the terminal interface (aka command
line), so pick the right package and whatnot for that. Programs, you can use
gimp (which is included) for graphics, gaim (for instant messaging) and etc. You
can run windows programs in linux using a program called Wine, not too sure
about that. Hopefully your linux adventure will be fun and interesting, if you
ever go there.
Woo Hoo I'm a Linux maniac, and it is totally worth it, ever since I went to
dual-boot, I don't think I have used Windows in 8 Months. As for the best
distro, well it depends on how experianced you are. The usual suggestion for
the beginner is Mandrake, but I don't like that one, My favorite and the one I
use is Slackware, I want to try Gentoo but I don't have the time. And there are
about 15 others I could explain but I don't want to. Thats not including the
other Unix based os's such as the BSD's, Irix, Open Darwin etc. As for the must
have programs, well it all depends on what you do, just remeber if you run into
problems check out linuxquestions.org. And if you need some software, you will
most likely find it on freshmeat.net, or sourceforge.net. Welcome to the happy
world of Open Source, .
You can run Photoshop in unix... hell, I run it in FreeBSD.
Two nifty little programs, one is Wine, the other is VMWare. I've used both, but
now use VMWare since it's faster than Wine. Wine is a Windows emulator, VMWare
actually boots Windows inside a window on your desktop (No dual booting). And
Wine starts up when you open Photoshop, so it isn't constantly.
It's been a long time since I was reliant on Windows... people who say they NEED
windows don't know how much a *nix system really can do, and what it can do so
much better.

now if only linux ran PS just as great as windows did........ i don't really want to use linux just to run wine constantly.

VMware emulates a pc .. and no matter what .. emulation = slow
