PNG section?

Minitokyo

Minitokyo » Minitokyo Fora » Minitokyo  PNG section?

I have dozens of extracted scans that I used to make my walls. All of them treated, cleaned, extracted and often re-cged ...

I wonder how about a PNG section, where users could post such works with transparency/layers? Basically would be a "extracted images" section, where one can upload images using PNG transparent format.

I would immediatly have dozens of high-quality PNG's to post xDDDD

BTW no tech problems here, PHP deals with PNG the same way as JPG so it might not even need to change any code at MT, besides allowing PNG post.

With this, wallers would be able to worry only about their art and background, and drop the annoyng time-consuming repetitive extraction. I also know some GOOD wallers that unfortunatelly have some issues extracting xD so they could use these and don't worry about extracting =p

It's a good idea, and it will made more simple to make a wall, with this section..

It should be a wonderful section if transparency enabled .pngs werent huge. :D I suppose when MT is capable of holding more size intensive images that might be an option. Right now png images are just to big. Could you imagine a 1500 x 1000 transparent png image? Thats scary! LOL.

That's not true. A 1500x1000 transparent PNG will be no more than 1.5 Mb, and that's not that big, given that I'm talking about treated, cleaned and extracted image (no need to be any larger dimensions than this since they would be ready to wall).

On the scans section you can find scans with 5Mb+ so why botter if all PNG's will have 2~3Mb? =p

I have often wondered about that myself... imagine... no hassle in extracting anymore!! XD
That would be a big bonus for us wallers... :D Someday I hope it would come true...
Also, because the scan gallery is chockful of junk and low-quality images.. :(
I'm keeping my fingers crossed.. ;)

If we have some rules for this section, I see only benefits from it, and no impact on MT system or performance:

1. Top 1600x1200 cleaned high quality **extracted** images

- No need for bigger images if they are high quality, since 1600x1200 would already be the largest wall possible ... so far

2. Croped images to the boundaries of the image, meaning, no useless transparent areas

3. NO layers. Transparent PNG supports them, but a 2 layers PNG 1500x1000 would be 3Mb+ and we are talking about ready-to-use images, no need to layers.

I have 50 HQ extracted images that I can easily exporto to PNG to populate such area should it became a reality ^^

I have a 1600 x 1145 scan, I cleaned really nicely and found it to be 2.45 Mb using the latest compression (PS CS). The clear jpeg of that image, at its original size of 2227x 1594 pixels, just with white background is only 596.9k saved at 60 quality. That is a huge difference. You can get a scan thats 50% bigger at nearly one fifth the size without losing quality. Not all JPEG scans are around 5mb and most of them range 500 - 800kb in size. Involving .png scans will demand at least 2mb of space for each scan if its a decent size. That will be a heavy load for the servers...

I keep my scans as .png images as well after I extract them so If they do pass this and we're allowed to upload .pngs, I have about 200. >_>;;;; I've been walling forever...lol.

That's beyond the point ... the point is: PNG is transparent and extracted ^^ As I said, use PNG to non-transparent images is indeed a bad idea, but to preserve transparency it's really nice, and as I also mentioned, no need to have images bigger than 1600x1200 since I'm supposing one will only upload ready-to-use images, this, 3mb is the largest you will get. The size of a good JPG scan to guarantee it will be usable at 1600x1200 with HG is about 1mb and nevertheless won't have transparency =p

Oh well looks like it's a lost case, so I'll add a PNG section on MY site and link at my userpage so people can get them there -_-

Here is it ... PNG section at my site, have fun people:

Due to my ISP restrictions on size/traffic I'll be restricting my PNG gallery for my own postings -_- should I get more space/traffic I might open it for everybody =d

btw there was a bug on the site earlier, nobody coyld access it xD fixed
