I have noticed a trend in the "main stream" anime and manga. It seems
to me a lot of the new stuff coming out features younger and younger characters.
I enjoy the early 20 types from the 80' and 90's. I find myself less interested
in the 12-15 year old characters who are over cute and still dealing in semi
mature themes. Is there anyone out there who agrees?
No, new anime isn't that bad with it's younger characters. I really don't think
it'll ever change, characters will probably only get younger and yet be more...
"devoleped". I think there's still room to nudge even closer to more
adult topics. It's just the way our culture goes, and for the older anime from
the 80's and 90's really bores me now that I look back on some of it.
It's true that the characters are younger and younger...
But that's not new. Look at Evangelion : the characters are only around fourteen
and still, there is still a lot of sexual symbolism under it.
But I think it's part of the Japaneese culture.
GTO is a great series dealing with this theme. It's about growing up, in a
way.
they look so young, so the show will pleasure loli-lovers. ; P i don't have
anything against them looking like a 15 years old in general, if show is good
than let them be.
but i don't like 'cute', moe ora 'cute+bloodbath' series, so increasing number
of them irks me.
It isn't just in anime, it is in video games as well. Take the Resident Evil
series for example. In RE1 Jill Valentine is roughly 23 years old. Yet she's a
former member of Delta Force, an ace marksman, a master in the art of picking
locks.
I have to agree with Enchanter on this. Younger characters are, in general,
more compeling and intersting than characters in their 30's and 40's.
My favorite anime/manga series is Berserk and almost all of, roughly, the first
13 volumes of the manga cover, through a flashback, Gutts life from childhood up
to "present" and then continue on from there. During the course of
the flashback into Gutts past you learn about the lives of other members of the
Band of the Hawk. While the flashback is indeed very good, the anime covers
pretty much just the flashback and is far and wide considered to be one of the
best anime out there, I can only imagine that it gets better once the story
returns to the present and Gutts quest for revenge.
i don't think that the age inself is my issue, rather the face that some of the
newer anime have 13 year old charecters addressing such grown up or adault
themes. late teens ans early 20 i might be more comfortable with, but case in
point evangaleon, they [the eva piolts] were all under 15 years old. well i
certenly enjoyed the series i found that i like the supporting cast more than
the pilots. no i don't really want to watch middle aged ppl, i would like the
charecters to be approaching adaulthood when they address adult themes.
And it also applies on movies and American series. Just watch ER: James Carter,
Abby Lockhart, Greg Pratt and Luka Kovac are all around their 30s. The oldest
one is George Romano, an old fart in his 40s. Watch Bad Boys II: both of the
cops are about 28.
frankly speaking, i'd prefer to watch young people than old ones. why? well, for
one, they're more attractive. number two, i don't think it's fun to draw old
people. i mean, wrinkles? droopy skin? not exactly stimulating XO
Who knows? Maybe an anime with old main characters might be interesting.
Something different at least :P Dun get me wrong.. I'm not against young
characters

A lot of anime is directed at younger people anyway. But there are plenty of
animes that are not cute and don't deal with semi mature animes. Watch those
instead.
It could just be the style of the animator. But there are fetishes that the
studios play to in order to attract certain audiences. Why do you think 'loli'
is so popular?(dont answer that)
Old? Hmm thats a bit hard to say. It's sad but I would say you are considered
old if you're mid-thirties.
The target audience is teenagers, so I guess they're just catering to those
needs. It's nice for 12-15 year olds to think that someone their age can be
::thinks:: Ed in FMA, or something like that. Plus teenagers now seem to like to
complicate their lives more, "grow up" earlier.
to be honest... half the characters in the anime i watch now don't even look
like the age they're supposed to be. (ie: does ichigo kurosaki REALLY look like
he's 15?) i agree with everyone else though... most people are a little
superficial. they'd prefer watching a cute/handsome main character over an older
one. they want to watch a character that maybe they can relate to and seeing as
the target audience for most anime is towards the younger end of the
spectrum...young characters.

yup, that's the reason i guess. most of the people that watches anime are teens.
hahaha... some characters have it the opposite way round as well... Some 30+
year old people still look as though they're only 20, or even a bit younger...

Not a surprise given that the target audience are generally teenagers, twenties and in lesser number, beyond the age group.
And face it, young, lively characters look more appealing than old, boring dudes. Doubly so for females.
Cheers!

Talk about Tenjou Tenge with its over-developed Natsume females. 15-years-old Aya? Yeah right!!!

if i were watching anime or reading manga i'd prefer reading about teens/pre teens rather than old or middle aged ppl

I enjoy seeing young ppl in anime. So are you saying you want to see old hags and old goats in anime? I don't think other ppl would enjoy that.

It's all about visual appeal, man.

Why? You like anime characters that looks like grandpa?
j/k
It's always the same: youn, beautiful, sexy. This is in each country the same.
i guess my point is, why 13-15 and not 17-21. and no i don't wish to see hag's and geezers, but what age do we now consiter OLD?

What I find weird is even the characters who look 20 or so, turn out to be 14-15.
