Am I evil?
So I was at my workplace, right. We started talking about Bittorent programs.
I mentioned that I use Azereus, and in it, I capped max Upload speed to 5kb/s in
order to get unlimited download speed. People accuse me of being evil, someone
even showed me "a finger" you dont know how hurt i am,
so question to you guys, do you cap your upload speed when using torrent? and
am i really that evil?
capping it when you use the computer is understandable, but if you're not using
the pc then just set it to unlimited and be done with it... its not evil, its
smart ^^
btw you should really raise you're upload speed according to you're connection,
because if you're on some sort of broadband connection and only seeding at
5kb/s, you need to get beat ><
I usually cap my upload to a reasonable limit since my ISP has strict regulation
about the upload bandwidth. Some of my friend got suspended by the ISP before
because they uploaded too much. I also try to make sure I at least upload as
many MB as many as I downloaded for a file
I usually leave it to unlimited. Imagine what will happen if all people using BT
capped their speed to around 10kb. Let yourself be part of the sharing. = )
My inet connection is 150/51 kB/s (dl/ul). I cap my ul at 40 kB/s. I think thats
fair and it's recommended even in the official BT pages and un a lot of FAQs.
You MUST cap your ul speed in order to get good dl speeds. The recommendation is
to cap ul at 80% total ul speed.
Capping is OK as long as it's reasonable. Remember how you told us you capped at
5k/sec and I gave you the finger? That's a pretty good indication how your cap
is unreasonable. The only people who should be capping at such rediculously low
speeds are people who have bandwidth limitations (i.e. the school charges for
every megabyte used).
So stop being a leech and give back to the community.

Yeah.
And hiddensnakehands, remember how I said you were an evil person? My opinion
on the matter still stands. The entire concept of Bittorrent relies on a
give-and-take relationship between users; without it, the entire system would
collapse.
ohhhh my my,
i was given this recommendation to do that when i started using bt, and i
find it very disturbing and feel that i am doing a wrong thing, but i also heard
horror stories that ppl get their internet connection cut off if they upload too
much. so all in all, i am not evil!, shinsenguimi!

Evil or not, you are a leech and a parasite on the network. The whole concept
of BitTorrent is tit-for-tat trading. ...And equal share in the distribution of
information. There is nothing wrong with reducing your upload rate... ....So
long as you're also adjusting your download rate. Managing system and network
performance is one thing. Betraying a whole world of open exchange is another.
Well, i play within the rules, and theres nothing wrong with that
if it quires 30kb/s in order to get unlimited download speed, i would do
that, but the program designer said only 5kb is necessary.
There are many evil (not necessarily including you in this), decadent and
parasitic people in this world who marginally abide by the letter of the law.
Doing so doesn't necessarily make one's deeds right. Nor is the person who does
so harmless to their society or network.
we are all living by the law, as long as it allows this, then it is okay to
do so. There are many instances that althhough moral, will not necessarily be
justifiable by the law. Some cases, although justified by the law, would not
necesarily consider to be good. For example, what is your stand on abortion? Is
it moral? Is it legal? It is hard to tell. So, i just do things according to the
law, there is only one law for everyone, but everyones moral level is different.
I do feel bad for what i am doing, but i am not willing to stop it

If you continue to do what you realize is morally wrong to your society, you are
betraying your society in spite of yourself.
It's all a matter of game theory. Unfortunately, the equilibrium point for
sharing a data channel is "all hog" instead of "all share"
even though the payoffs for everyone will be higher if everyone shares. If
everyone hogs, then everyone gets the same (but less than optimal).
Don't worry, I have physical access to this one leecher. I'm smack him for
everyone.

Oh man. . . even game theory proves that
hiddensnakehands is evil by forcing society into a less-than-optimal state.
Handeth over the nail bat, kawaiiguy. . . I want in on the smacking

Admittedly, I do.
I live with my entire family, and they realise when I have Azureus open
So yesh, I kinda have to - especially when my brother plays WoW. ._.
Having said this, I only remove seeds after a fair amount of time, so I can seed
it back to others overnight. Unfortunately, since my connection only gives me a
net upload of ~28kb/s, I can't really do so very well, and usually stop seeding
at seed ratio 2.
2's a bit pathetic, but I'd do more if I had a better connection
*sigh* I guess there's no real advantage to seeding or anything, though. I just
do it so I'm immune to that guilty concience thing, as torrents wouldn't be as
good if everyone did that.
Heh, I guess there's nothing wrong with not liking your bandwidth being munched
up

Capping upload speed is lame.
no it isnt its the smart thing to do i hate it when im upload double what im download i put mine at 20kb

at home I cap my upload, but on campus I leave it uncapped. Mainly because I don't have as much bandwith at home.
I usually cap my speed to around 32kb when downloading than when I done I maximize my upload speed.

less than optimal? maybe. But if everyone uploads too much, would that really be optimal?
and i am making a stand for all the leecheres, the community looked down on us.

i am proud to say i remove seeds as fast as possible, yeah...
