My Study Case: FL vs FAVs

Yeah I know it's a repeated subject but I didn't fell flooding the other topics about this with my own study case. Dewa ...

For some time I've been monitoring the "best" wallpapers at MT and decided I wanted to get one of my walls to be highlighted. So I read a lot of threads, watched lots of wallpapers, and honestly, felt I could do that or better ... so started my case ...

1. Cute/ecchi girls: Tryed with cute, ecchi, overly-ecchi, you name it. No luck
2. Cloudy and starry skies: Lots of clouds and night scape. Even got some guestbook comments saying my nightscapes were "the best" .. no luck
3. Nice effects around character: tryed it all, even poluted some of my walls ... no luck
4. Original works: Tryed new color balances, new effects, purple and red (I don't like it) walls ... no luck
5. Highlighted scans: Used highlight "overly faved" scans. Cleaned, perfect extracted, perfect reconstructed ... no luck
6. Moons! Tryed croped, partial, 2 moons ... no luck
7. Tryed to post when the site were crouded, so more people see it ... no luck
8. Everything above together with lots of combinations ... no luck

True, the walls I used case study "8" got the highest favs (if you check my top 3, all of them are night scapes, cloudy starry with moon and cute/ecchi characters .. all done trying to get favs, I hate all of them, never user them as my BG), but yet, after monthes, the first only got 40+ favs.

Auto-criticism: I don't think my works are 10x worst than the works that get highlighed. In fact, some of my walls I find a lot better then those ... at least at the same level. Yet, 10x less favs to them.

Analisys: The ONLY - SUPERB - ABSOLUTE difference between my walls and the highlithed are, yes you know where I'm going ... FRIENDLIST SIZE

MT is a elitist friendlist biased comunity. If I start flooding and befriending everyone, every single crap-wall I make will get 50+ favs, and eventually some even will get highlighted. If I'm just an artist making walls, caring less of having to suck up to people, I'll go mostly unnoticed.

I'll not go into explaining the OBVIOUS of why that happens.

I'm tired of seeing fair wallpapers that I won't even visit getting 50+ favs just because the author have 100+ "friends"

So ...

DROP THE STUPID FRIEND LIST NOTIFICATION OR JUST ACCEPT THIS IS A HIPOCRITAL COMMUNITY

thanks, those were my 2 cents ^^

If you have noticed, not everyone's tastes are the same. Sometimes, I think having friends around is a good thing because they are there to either praise your work or they are there to criticize your work. If you don't have friends, you won't get much of both. Also, you shouldn't do what other people do to endeavor reaching the top favs. Just be yourself. Those who try to push themselves to an extreme are more likely to make a costly mistake, and I'm sure that that is something you don't want to happen. Hey, there are some people, or even friends on your friendslist, who just like the design of a thumbnail and they fave it on the spot without viewing the full image; I guess they have some taste, but they don't have inquiry. Sure favorites mean a lot, but the comments you receive should also mean something. That something, especially if the comments are criticism, should help you out in the long run. Well, this is my opinion.

Before judging me take your time to watch my gallery. I have some 90% wallpapers where I'm myself and I do things to be pretty and nice in my tastes, so your whole point that I should not "push myself to extremes" is completely empty.

Also, since things seams not to be SO obvious, let me explain two basic concepts:

First, if you are going to fav something because it's your friends, it's got nothing to do with quality, thus FL is a hipocrital system who faves people who flood the site (or you really really think those 100+ people at friends list are FRIENDS?)

Secondly, since you get notifications, you will see the submission regardless of it leaving main page, thus, more people will see your work just because they were notifyed. If I have no "friend", nobody will be notified, and in 30 min when my wall leaves main page, it will be left for the eventual people who browse the new items. Alas, if I have 100+ friends, they will get a notification, visit, and will most likelly be more kind to drop a fav just because they are a "FRIEND".

Favorites means nothing, my critic here is that, as it is, MT favorite system is only a hipocrital friendlist packing system, not a favorite system at all. It IS a failure as a favourite system, and thus, you either change it to better reflect what it's supposed to be, or accept it's useless.

TASTE, my "friend", have nothing to do with current fav system.

This topic has been raised numerous times to the same conclusion. However, while suggestions on trying to change the system have yielded some interesting discussions, I don't think Sheqel is going to change the system anytime soon.
It's a flawed system, but in the end all systems have some flaws. At least with MT we know HOW it is flawed.

On top of Caoibrz's comment, I believe the term of "friend" in the word "friendlist" has been widely misinterpreted nowadays.

No, they don't add you to your friendlist because you want to built a good, friendly relationship. It's far from that. Over the history, it has changed more into a "watchlist" rather than a "friendlist," believe me.

Its rather sad to think about it, and I'm sorry to break some hearts this way, but some wallers only make friends with you because they want you to fav. their submissions. They don't care about anything else. And the more friends you have, the more noticable your submissions will become, which will evidently become noticed by more people, and these wallers will be able to make more friends in the process. It's a never-ending vicious cycle that never ceases to falter.

And yes, some people do make friends only to use them as a tool of faving stuff in a sense - only to get their submissions highlighted, as unfortunate enough as it were. That's the way things go around sometimes, within this community. And yes, despite that this fact evidently exists - the term of "quality" equaling to the "amount of favs." have been rigged in a sort of way, that you can't always compare the number of favs. to great works, from here on in. Meh. Oh well. That's just from my perspective over here.

Perfect comment by Celessa.

Liked the term Watchlist ... indeed it's what it really is.

IMHO just dropping the notify of new submissions would make the system incredible better and more just with all comunnity

Its true, I have to agree. I didnt get many favs at all until my friendslist started getting bigger and bigger. And in MT its apparently a common courtesy to add the person who friendlists you back as a friend. More people want to watch you. I seriously think that friendlist was just another way to avoid saying MTWatch like DeviantWatch. Its all it really is. I mean you dont KNOW the person. I take the time to comment on the submissions of all the people on my friendlist(and phew thats a lot of work sometimes) but my favs still belong to those whom I think deserve it, like scans that I have used or plan to use in my wallpaper(because they're clean and well sized) and wallpapers/artworks that I see have some serious effort and a good outcome.

Exposure does matter, and you get more exposure as more people are interested in your work and friendlist you. Sometimes, you have to friendlist them back. :}

Its a flaw, but all we can do is work with what we have.
