What do you use to create noise signals from the PC? For those with multiple
cards (which span across the poll options), choose the one card that you favour
or use the most.
I am a happy user of the M-Audio Revolution & Creative E-MU 0404 (both of
which fall under the prosumer category).
Let the poll begin!
Edit: The Audiotrak Prodigy 7.1 has recently joined the happy family of my
collection.
I personally use an Audigy 2 ZS in my box. What makes it particularly nice is
that with a coaxial cable, I can hook it up to my Logitech z-5500 speakers for
5.1 digital audio. Needless to say, it sounds absolutely and ridiculoulsy
amazing, so no complaints here!
I have Audigy Player for games (its connected to a headset) and I use the
onboard SoundMAX's optical output for the home theater receiver
(music/movies/anime).
Audigy2 ZS for the win. Although configuring it after a windows reinstall is a
real pain, it's worth the trouble when you turn it up at 3am and wake your
neighbors.
I use an nVidia nForce 2 APU. It's high quality and supports hardware Dolby
Digital encoding (which no other soundcard can do last I checked). Not to
mention it's basically free for anyone using an nForce 2 system. Too bad they
dropped the APU from the nForce 4 in favor of a hardware firewall.

Aren't you glad I told you how to do that
i have an Audigy Gamer, but not like it matters. I just use it for digital out
and let my speakers do the rest. I <3 my Logitech Z-5500s
What I'd really like is an M-Audio card... Now those are nice!
depends on the box. I have a soundblaster live, an onboard laptop CrystalSound
piece of crap, a VIA onboard that works pretty well, a PCI 128 that I
practically swear by, a few boards with onboard SB16s, a couple AWE 32 and 64
cards, and a few cards that came from God only knows where.
My favorites? The pci128 and soundblaster live. The VIA onboard is actually
fairly decent as far as onboard desktop usage goes, but I wouldn't call it high
grade. There are a lot of workable sound chips out there, its just a matter of
which ones are best integrated and operate smoothest in most circumstances.
On-board sound these days is pretty good. Unless you've got some very nice
speakers buying a seperate soundcard is a waste of money IMO. Most nice speakers
have digital anyway.

Pretty hard pressed to find digital speakers at a decent price though... Most
start at the $200+ range, don't they?

old, but still good!
I used to have one of those. My cousin in Hong Kong bought it for me. When I
flipped it over, it said "made in the usa."
The PCI 128 is actually a better-sounding card than the Live. It sounds cleaner
and IIRC does not resample to 48KHz.
I can clearly see that this board is mostly divided into those who use the
Creative SB cards and those who use on-board adapters. I am so far still the
only one with a Pro-sumer card.

Considering that Creative is one of the larger consumer audio card
manufacturers, it's not terribly surprising. Also, the Audigy2ZS is heralded as
"the gamer's card" and people flock to it. The other "half"
don't even bother and use whatever came with the computer.
As a personal preference, I'd rather have an M-Audio card. The Revolution 7.1
still does extremely well, but isn't really designed for gamers.

Try the Audiotrak Prodigy 7.1. It's said to have a more refined sound than the
Revo and also better gaming support. Definitely not on par with Creative's sound
engine, but still very good for an Envy card.
I regularly use two cards: The onboard nForce 2 one with headset for Teamspeak
and VoIP and for gaming Audigy 2 ZS.
By this combination I am not to always plug-and-unplug the headset. ;-)
Hmmm...let's see (checks system properties), I have an ESS Allegro built-in
soundcard that came with my Presario. It works great, especially with the set of
Labtec speakers and Sony headphones that I use.

Wow, that's pretty nice. Did a little research on it and it got some impressive
reviews. I'm not really in the market for a new sound card though, since I use
digital out and have my speakers do all the work. I think I'd even be ok if I
went back to my onboard sound and hooked up the coax/optical out. I'll keep it
in mind though.

Creative ... not sure which one ... but i know its top of the line ... only the best for my new kick @$$ computer.

I use's Creative Audigy 2 [value package]
.
the bass is very good, but still lack of trebles.
i having hard time to find a way to modified my Audigy 2 to 4, if anyone who has knows how, please tell me.
ps: is it really the need the actual 400mb audigy 4 driver? What the....... O_O
"the bass is very good, but still lack of trebles"
Are you sure? I have an A2ZS and find its highs very pronounced and obvious. I think it's more likely to be related to your speakers (treble-wise).
"i having hard time to find a way to modified my Audigy 2 to 4"
Is that even possible? The hardwares are very different, esp. the DAC.
I just use the on-board soundcard.
