Recently I had a friend who has decided to become atheist and it really got me thinking. I grew up in a very Christian Household and never got a chance to really question its ideas. But as of late I have noticed a lot more atheists out there and I find it kind of disturbing. It seems that atheism is always a product of some emotional frustration at ones lack of control. Like the culture dealing with cutting I don't understand the mindset that leads to those sort of decisions. What are your views?

I grew up in a very christian home, and almost all of my friends are atheists... lol, to me tho it doesn't really matter. :D

I am a Philosopher by nature, and what I actually believe in I'd rather not leave to the public. I'm curious
whether general Christian faith is challenged by thought, or science. Simply put, I am not offended, in
the least by any Religous path. As one man to another I don't need to think anything about me is better
than another man, especially my views on God. I believe everyone should try to clarify exactly what is they
are, and what they believe in, instead of going by some label. -thanx

i don't want to offend anyone, but what's an atheist?

Yeah its important to not let labels define your views. As a youth in California I am in a very small minority. But I let my views be known, I am liberal but identify myself more as a Republican. I support Bush but believe in free thought and ideas. It has become so partisan these days you have to identify with one group or another its silly really.
Oh and an atheist is someone who does not believe in God or a divine power.

No problem. An atheist is someone who believes that there is no God or any type of spirit or spirits that exist is the world.

There are also many Agnostic people. These are people who beleive that it is possible but not in the form of any religion.

I myself am an aetheist and I always find it interesting to read posts like this. For me, it really makes no difference to me what your beliefs are. What tends to annoy me about religious people is when they get angry at you for not having the same beliefs as you. Not that I am accusing the thread creator or others of saying this.

As far as why I don't believe in God or Gods. The idea of spirits just seems so impossible to me. How could anything every create something like the universe, it is utterly impossible. The universe is so vast and complex that it is something that could only possibly been generated by random events.

"It seems that atheism is always a product of some emotional frustration at ones lack of control"
My response is that I hold a similar view of religious people. Thre way I see it is that people who believe in god for two main reasons;
because they simply haven't bothered to consider the possibility of them not having someone watching over them,
because they don't want to consider the possibility.

I see "Lack of control" in religion because people that hide in belief that someone is always watching over them are the one not willing to face the fac that they ae alone and there is nothing to look forward to when you are dead.

Some people just don't want to or can't handle believing that.

i thrive on this belief because I know in my mind that anything in my life will come from hard work and when I die, the only thing that will happen is that I will vanish. Following this, I put my best efforts into everything that I do and I will be remembered when I am gone.

Woo, what a rant. Anyway, adios.

"I see lack of control in religion because people hide in belief that someone is watching over them, and

um Pertheusual. . . how do you know? Isn't what you believe in only that. Your beliefs. Life is like Russian
Rullette. You can either believe in something or not, but in the end you are responsible for your choice.
(no pressure ^_^' )

The whole control thing comes from the fact that almost all the atheists I know are the Goth types which i consider to be a silly status symbol that hides behind the fact that they want to be different and not live by others standards yet have their own uniform and code.

i am an atheist, but i dont believe in god because of a lack of control. i believe that science is more logical than a god, but almost all my friends are mormans(if you dont know what that is then too bad) but it doesnt matter what religion you are, if you are a good person and stand up for your beliefs

and its not that i dont believe in god but i just rely on sciences first, not a god.
"An Atheist knows that a hospital should be built instead of a church.
An Atheist knows that a deed must be done instead of a prayer said.
An Atheist strives for involvement in life, not escape into death"
i find that this says a lot, although not totaly true.
im not saying that cristians arent striving to make the world better

I don't want to come off as being rude but I want to understand the frame of mind that people of different opinions come from. My own thing is that I am a bit shaky in belief and sort of want to hear others support orthodoxy but at the same time I am curious as to what it is that leads others.

I don't know about a lot, but I'm certainly one of them. I refuse to believe that there is anything beyond this pitiful world of hours. My reasoning is simply that we have travelled to the stars and found no sign of heaven, and burrowed deep into the Earth and found plenty of fire and brimstone, but not demons torturing condemned souls.

Nor do I believe in souls. We are merely the sum of our expierences as we have gone through life. If it was ever confirmed that there is a God, I would probably choose to hate him. In my mind he's not much different from any other tyrant that's tried to rule this pitiful world...live as he wishes and you'll be rewarded, Deviate even a little and you're condemned to firey torment. Who is anybody to say what is a moral life, even if those morals don't agree with the norm.

i don't like humanity much either, but I tend to merely believe what I see with my own two eyes. Humanity has a talent for destroying itself, but it's something I can prove through investigation and emperical evidence

I'm an atheist myself. I noticed that as time goes on, more and more atheists appear on the scene. It's logical though, with today's technology and modern society people tend to rely less on superstitions. I think it's only a matter of time before everybody becomes atheist. A century from now, kids will be reading their history books and making fun of our generation :x Like how we feel about how Egyptians used to worship the Sun as god... everybody should just do whatever makes them feel better and sleep at night though....

Draken I think you've clearly stated you don't know about a lot. I see a lot of people are angry from how
the Christian bible describes "God". All I have to say is go to the library please! Solid Snake as well. I've
tried to learn about every religion know to man. Many religions involving a god, or gods don't have that
ownership mentality. And answering Solid Snakes question about Goths. I am a former Goth, but I was
a loner. I became a Goth because back then I saw the sufferings of this world as ultimate reality. Now,
I don't. I realized I don't have to fear anything in this world except maybe broken guitar strings, and bad
hair days. whatever.

bump

there are alot of athiestes i luckily got to choose for myself on religon.
most people are athiestes because they have looked thoroughly at the scientific side of everything.

have you every noticed, that people that join christianity most of the time their lives change for the better. you dont hear of that much in any other religons. all the other religons are like there own cruel set of rules made up by someone.

well that is my filosophy thanks and goodby

:pacman: :(

there is a lot of people who are atheists because they don't believe in anything that is religous and they it might have distractions to them and so many wars were fought just because of religion. those are some reason why people are atheists but there are more reasons to it.

I used to be Catholic. I truly believed in God and angels and all that other stuff. I was not in any state of emotional distress or anything. I became Atheist when I found out that the bible is simply a book written many, many years ago. When people believed that the clouds held angels and God. When they thought that diseases were a curse from God or Satan. When people, well, weren't very smart. Anyone could write anything they want in a book. They could write that a man turned rocks into bread. They could write that a man walked on water once. I think that the Atheist population is slowly growing. Many religious monuments and decorations are being taken down. The US of A is slowly becoming less biased. I think that is a good thing. As an Atheist, I have learned to rely on myself and only myself. I don't need to ask for help from a fictional character when I have a problem. If I am distressed, I will rid myself of whatever the cause may be. I have never been happier.
I personally think that people will resort to religion and superstition most often when they are in pain or under great stress. When they are in trouble or in danger. It's when people seek comfort that they will look toward religion for help. I never do this. I rely on myself and use my brain when I seek guidance. I don't need a book and I have never been happier.

Your quote you started this thread with...you could replace it with 'Giant turtle flying through outerspace that controls the cosmos' and it would still be valid.

You could replace it with 'imaginary friend' or 'made-up fairy tale story character' and it would be valid.

i am, but my parents still insist on church. . .psst

Parents want the best for you (hopefully), they must have a reason why they insist on it.

Thats not technically correct. Agnosticism is the belief that the existence of God, gods, or divine things is unknown, inherently unknowable, or incoherent and therefore irrelevant to life.

You can call me Agnostic cause thats how I feel.

on second thought, im more agnostic than atheist :P

well... I don't like to think it that way... but I'm actually atheist cuz a personal crisis jajajajaja
