What IRC client do you consider to be the best for Windows? (Speaking as an IRC newbie)

mIRC - good for beginners.

There is also ChatZilla which is a Firefox extension. Easy to use also.

leafchat is a nice little program to use if you don't want to use the conventional mIRC, which in my opinion is also the easiest to use.

I using mIRC + nnscript and for Quakenet, for other networks I simply use xchat (you still can find the free version, pretty easy to use and looks nice too)

mIRC / UPP for me. Not the simplest, but it works well.

mIRC is the most common win32 client. It works well and you can get tons of scripts that customize it.

xchat

Ever chatted on a server which used unicode and wondered about all the strange characters? If so, you're using mIRC.
A good and free alternative to mIRC is HydraIRC.

X-Chat ist the client I'm using, too. With X-Chat you will not only have the ability to join unicode-using servers, but you can easily write your own scripts with various scripting languages - and utilize tons of scripts other users have written.

I just heard xchat for windows isn't free anymore or something. I use linux so it doesn't affect me. Then again if you do intense networking, windows is not your friend anyhow.

Silverex still makes free updated versions of X-Chat available:

2.4.4 just came out though, so as of today Silverex is a version behind ;)

Btw, as I understand, isn't mIRC technically non-free also?

Anyway, so far X-Chat's been a bit buggy for me, but I still find it fairly nice.

beats me. I left windows behind long ago, and xchat runs beautifully under linux.

X-Chat was not designed for windows in the first place so it may still have some issues. As Boris said, it runs great under linux

Well for Windows, mIRC is very popular. I tried HydraIRC recently and it was quite nice once I cleaned up the rather cluttered default layout (and it's actually free).

Personally I like irssi.

i tried several different clients, but i still find that MIRC is the best out there.

I use Xchat, and just upgraded to 2.4.4 earlier today since it was released. I've been using it since it pre 1.0.0 XD Only gotten better. :)

Use it on Windows too, I wouldn't recommend anything else. It's user-friendly and the UI is beautiful and easy to navigate. Highly customizable, tons of (powerful) script support (Perl/Tcl), and most of all it is stable.

The other client I like, and has NEVER failed me at all, is irssi. Whenever X is down or I can't use a desktop environment I'm on irssi, it's also great/convienent when I'm not at my computer. I love shelling in and using it to chat with. :D

I'm currently beta testing x2 which is going to be awesome once it's released but untill then try out x1.11

Is there any particular (Windows-based) clients that cater to downloaders? Like, scripts or automations that make downloading on IRC a convenient or easy affair.

Cheers!

Xchat under linux supports Python also. I am pretty sure that also goes for the Windows version, but I could be wrong

Yeah it does, but almost all scripts are perl-based. Only one or two of my scripts are Python. :)

I'm not sure on Windows since Windows isn't my desktop OS (freebsd is) and I don't mess with Xchat much on Windows, but I'm pretty sure it will.

I only ask because I myself tend to use python. I have some that I have written myself, not that I have need to run them under windows. But if any friends ask it would be nice to know.
