Machines' rights?

This...may seem...like another dotty question...but...say...Earth's magnetic fields took a bizzare turn...or something...and...it caused every electrical appliance and machine...to become 'sentient'...meaning 'intelligent'. Would...machines have rights then? Depending...on what they did?

I'm sure we would try to give them rights but I don't think the overall human population would take it too well. I for one wouldn't mind sharing.

Yeah...I...would not mind...sharing, either... Depending...on the machines' natures... I mean...cars, for instance...could become rampant...or something...

For one thing, that would include writing another constitution which took several years to do when the US first received rights or even other countries for that fact. However, the population is so large today that control of newer life forms might even be difficult, and of course, it would even be tough to control the production of some machines because of the life they will be given. This is a dotty question that you asked, but it seems that the machines would probably have rights. I mean, it's bad enough that Futurama has robots that do good and bad things. It's pretty scary on top of it that they can stand up to most of what we throw at them. I think they should be given more physical restrictions in that case.

Yeah...that's true... I mean...their ways of communication...would be different, too...and...we would not...be able to understand them...if they were 'plotting'...

Well I was thinking like if it were humanoid robots but if it's our existing technology, then it's a little harder. We rely on machines too much for them to have choice. I mean what if the iron lung decides it doesn't want to do it's job anymore? Not to mention your PC watching you right now lol.

Yes...and that...is the idea...is our current technology... So yes...you...are right...it would be difficult... I mean...what about...lawn mowers? They...could decide...not to work...and let the grass grow...making people with asthma (like me)...get sick...

Why is...everyone...talking like...Kirk? XP

Anyway, you don't need some wacky event like the magnetic field taking a bizzare turn(and that actually happens every few million years, with the poles switching from north to south to south to north). Wait a few more decades, say, 20 to 50 years. We will see robots and androids that have advanced to such an extent that they're pretty much sentient.

If you want to learn more about the subject, read Philip K. Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep", or better yet, the movie "Blade Runner". Also, haven't seen the movie yet, but Steven Spielberg's "a.i." is also about the subject of whether a machine is alive or not. For anime, there's "Chobits" and "Key the Metal Idol".

That's a little out there but I guess that's a good example lol. Well to tell you the truth, I wouldn't like the situation very much. I mean you would have so little privacy and we don't even have that much now.

Yeah...Chobits...points this subject out allot... (Good show^^...)

Same here...I mean...computers...could just decide...that we are inferior...

"...that as man busied themselves with their affairs, they were scrutinised and studied, as a scientist might study the organisms which swarm and multiply in a drop of water..."
-H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds

From your example, it's easy to take care of. Just get rid of your current stuff in a humane way and buy something freshly built.

That...is true... I mean...something like that...would be easy...since...they are freshly built.

If making them was the source then it would start getting crazy. There are just too many insane people to keep track of and there's no doubt in my mind that the Matrix story could happen. The downfall part, not the later parts with the jacking in and crap lol.

Yeah...I mean...there...would be no way...to fight it ~_~ ...

Only thing we could do is seperate each other peacefully.

Quote by sylvenOnly thing we could do is seperate each other peacefully.

That's true...and then...maybe the machines...would...separate themselves?

Another possibility is that they could witness the violence within ourselves, maybe even an assanination. They would probably feel sorry for us and leave, or maybe help......dunno.

That...would be neat...if they helped... Then...we could possibly gain the technology...of spacial travel... You know...along the lines of Event Horizon (1997)...

I like that movie lol. It would be strange to be helped further by the things that help us now, the only difference would be communication.

Yes...communication...would be difficult, true...

No what I meant was that if they were able to help us a while back, they couldn't. If they could communicate if these events happened they would probably help us more but with words this time lol.

Since machines lack the proper communication and the necessary day-to-day needs, I think that maybe they should be the ones to provide for humans, but in turn, that would make humans lazier than they already are. It's as if the machines were to be given intelligence, the world would be even more technological, and we would rely on the machines to get our things done. If that ever became a right for machines, then it's likely that many people would quit working and even farming land because they don't have to bust their behinds as much.

Oh...I see... That...would make...more sense ^_^' ...

Yes...and that...could be a problem, too...

Well just because a machine does't require needs doesn't mean that it doesn't deserve a choice.
