I work out quite a bit and was wondering if shrugs are done by rotating the
shoulders in either a clockwise and counter clockwise motion, or if they're
simply the raising and lowering of the shoulders. I've heard and seen people do
either way but I want to know which is the better method to gaining strength.
Or does it simply depend on the person?
Shrugs are great for the trapezius. You can go straight up and down, but I
prefer rotating front to back. The larger range of motion involves more of the
muscle.

Shoots, those shoulder shrugs, yeah they are great for your traps, and what he
said about more movement = more work = better results. Now here is the
question, do you wanna get big or get ripped??? I've worked in 2 gyms and
currently I work out 5 times a week. PM me if you wanna talk about working out
stuff. oh and if you wanna get big and strong I think you should be doing
cleans and presses, my traps are fairly big, but most of it came from cleans and
presses I think. Hope that helps.

Good point. That's what I've been doing. The most I've ever shrugged was about
320 lbs. Because I've done it so much, I got the nickname Pyramid 'cause my
neck gets about as thick as my head does. Btw, I want to get both strong and
ripped. That sounds kinda weird... "I wanna get ripped." I also work
out five days of the week. I rest on weekends. I've never done cleans before,
but I do quite a bit of presses. As big as I am, I dont think I'm really tough
just yet.... I mean, I've done some pretty impressive stuff, but I cant really
bench much. I've pressed 1010 lbs three times on the hip sled before, but I was
pretty far back so I can get more leverage. Anyway, thanks for the help!

Whoops.

I work out in my dance class....but we don't do shrugs.... We tend to do extremely painful stretches that should be impossible
