I do not think this is as touchy of a thread as "Abortion"
So, lets discuss
Are you for it or against it?
Me? I am against it. It is a reverse racism (In my mind, there should never be a reverse racism, racism is racism, there is no straight ahead racism or reverse racism. But for the sake of political correctness, lets just say reverse racism here)

Hehe, I find it oddly humorous that you have given "affirmative action" the label of "reverse racism" for the sake of political correctness :)

I've heard of a college that had an affermative action bake sale were if you were hispanic or african/American then you paid $.75/per cookie. If you were white then your paid $1.00/per cookie. If your asian then you pay$1.25/per cookie.
The Club that did this was trying to make a point that Afirmative action is truly bogus. The funniest part was that the Liberal College proffesors shut the sale down. They made up some stupid excuse that I don't even remember.

haha, that is really really funny.
Yeah, affirmative action in college applications have grown out of control
Forexample, if you are a black person, then you would get your score raised by a certain amount.
Although they are saying that no discriminations in the application process, even if you dont indicate your race, if you name starts with "ebony" or end with "Chen", people would have a pretty good idea as to who you are

i don't think it's fair for someone to get more points just for being a certain race. i for one would not like to be admitted to a college that used affirmative action because then i'd begin to question whether i was admitted based on my qualifications or just because of my race. i DO think that racial diversity on the campus is important, but it shouldn't be the deciding factor.

Affirmitive action is extremely unfai and I'm honestly against it. I'm not a racist but I do know that when the Civil rights acts were going on that African Americans were claiming that they were "equal." Now don't get me wrong I have a school where the minority population is about 45 or 50% and I have many African American friends. I don't think any person should recieve special benefits like we have in our school. If you are African American in our school you dopn't have to gain as many credits as the rest of the school population. I think that if we are all equal than the schools shouldn't go easy on anyone. And just so everyone is sure, I AM NOT A racist, I HAVE japanese IN MY family AND I can't GO making FUN OF ANY race.

well, i guess the theory is that minorities tend to come from lower income families, and lower income families tend to put less emphasis on doing well in school, getting a good job, staying away from crime/drugs, etc; and therefore minorities need a boost of some sort so that its fair... but its pretty bad logic... there are minority families who are rather well off, and plenty of lower class white families, also not all people from lower class families become delinquents... at the very least they could base it on income to be somewhat more accurate in hitting those who need it...

I was raise in the Catholic tradition so I basically against it because it is the taking of a life or murder.

Affirmative action..waste of bloody time. Judge people on their merits, not mere race or other such things. Honestly, why should having dark skin or other kinds of features get you special consideration?

It shouldnt.

I think you're right hiddensnakehands about it not being reverse racism

If you favor one group, you're not favoring the others, and that's discriminating against them. The positive way some people mention this, as if it were a discount, only serves to make it sound good.

Like in the bake sale example, I could SAY that the cookies start at $1.25 and if you're white, you get a "discount" and if you're Hispanic, you get a bigger "discount", etc. OR I could say that the cookies were $0.75 to start with and if you're Asian you get fined a $0.50 surcharge. The end result is the same, though, and that's that certain groups are getting shafted in this deal and other people, possibly less qualified, are getting helped. Well that's just my opinion, don't flame me ^_^

It doesn't help that AA establishes the impression that most visible minorities got into X college/job because of AA. It may have good intentions, but it certainly isn't cultivating an environment that is neccessarily beneficial even to the people it's supposed to assist.

I don't believe in affirmative action. No one should get an advantage just because they're an African American or a Hispanic. I understand why affirmative action is put in place, but having this in place will also hurt other people. A less qualified minority should not get the job or get accepted to a college over a more qualified person just because they are considered a minority.

LOL Affirmative action is where folks review the demographics of a group or populace in terms of race, and then provide... ...Subsidies, etc. to encourage any under-represented minority to ...increase... in proportion. ...Generally, no killing involved. ...But I suppose... ...it could be accomplished that way too, LOL xd

i feel any and all segregation by race is wrong. ...But for now it remains the lesser of the racial evils, and I support it. ...Even though, just today, I bore witness to a historically reknowned minority harrasing someone from a historically 'majority' race. ...It seems to happen alot where I live, and I'm sick of it. ...But... ...I'm not going to feed the race-oriented bickering...

affirmative action is flat out racism and sexism. It should never have existed in the first place.

I was told a story by another firefighter one day about him going to apply at a major city that I will not name, to take a civil service exam to get on their fire department. He arrived and was asked what he was doing there. He then looked around and noticed that everyone in the room was black or hispanic whereas he was white, and was informed by a guy candidly that the objective of this round of hires was to fill minority slots. This guy is one of the best firefighters I know, and I have had the pleasure of serving with him for a couple years now. And they missed out all because he had the audacity to show up and be white.

This sounds much like my pet hate: "Land rights for gay whales!" was a bit of graffiti in Adelaide, SA, Australia for many years, & it became quite famous - it's poking fun at all the minority groups who get special treatment in a social, economic, & judicial sense. I don't know for sure if it's the same thing, but it sounds like it.

Any preference for any race is racism. If you're trying to fill "ethnic slots" you're racist; You're admitting it by trying so hard to deny it. Same goes for gender, culture, religion, etc.

Sometimes it's OK - I don't want to make everyone hire completely un-race-based - what if it's a shelter for abused wives, or a group for fathers who've been cut off from their kids by the law siding with the mother regardless? Just no hiring negros/asians for the sake of hiring negros/asians. Hire based on who fits the damn job!

'Reverse racism' is a misnomer, because it suggests that it's not only not racism, but is in fact the perfect opposite. Just be politically incorrect & call it what it is. If people can't cope with the truth, let them rot in the streets after it kills them.

Choosing people on race will always be racist. Besides, us Asians always get shafted anyway.

This is what I mean. We don't enjoy the benefits of being White, but we don't get the governmental help like other minorities either. I'm not bitching though, cause I don't depend on my race anyway.

As far as I'm concerned Affirmative Action, actually harms the groups it is designed to assist. It does relieve some of the pressures of poverty and inadequate education by guarenteeing them jobs even if they don't deserve them; however, it also creates the illusions that certain things are owed to them. Race shouldn't matter. I have actually had 10 year-old boy accuse me of being racist because I wouldn't by cookies from him. I've had several people tell me they deserve ......... because their ancestors were enslaved. Affirmative Action encourages this sort of thinking and draws attention to the division between races. It also increases resentment between races. I sure would be upset if I had proof someone got a job over me based on the color of their skin.

I particularly enjoy poking fun at the fact that white straight guys aren't allowed to be proud of who we are...and it is also a pain in the butt to get hired for a job.

by the way, to all you straight white guys, I started a group you might enjoy. Very tongue-in-cheek.
